It's a Review. A Review!

I just noticed DPReview has published reviews by new reviewers (assuming under Simon's supervision). First, let me say, "Congrats, Richard and Lars. Your reviews are well-done."

As Phil said, it seems DPR started to regain power and publishing pace of reviews. I hope DPR will soon publish reviews on other cameras that are currently on the waiting list.

I find it a bit interesting that there are differences in rating between A570 and SD870 in terms of Build quality. SD870 scores 9.0, whilst A570 scores 7.5 though the reviewer says, "the A570 IS is surprisingly well put together and feels very solid despite having a lot more plastic than other Canon compacts." I wonder what makes/justifies the different scores. Is the difference due to plastic usage? Or due to preference/criteria of the different reviewers? The reviewers each say, "It's a solid-feeling camera" (SD870) and "feels very solid" (A570) though.

As for test items, I for one suppose it might be more user (or reader) friendly if these reviewers shared the same items in order.
A570 review has
1. introduction,
2. body & design,
3. operation,
4. timings & sizes,
5. photographic tests,
6. photographic tests,
7. photographic tests,
8. movie mode,
9. compared to...,
10. compared to...,
11. compared to...,
12. compared to...,
13. conclusion,
14. samples.

In contrast, SD870 review has
1. introduction,
2. design & operation,
3. photographic tests,
4. photographic tests,
5. compared to...,
6. compared to...,
7. compared to...,
8. compared to...,
9. compared to...,
10. performance,
11. conclusion & samples.

We've long had different review templates for different types of cameras, though we currently only use 3... 'in-depth review' (for SLRs), 'review' (for fully-featured compacts) and 'concise review' (for point and shoot cameras or very minor updates).

I'll asume that since you said no more cannon compacts, that the A650 wont come for a while (if at all) will it be safe to assume the A650 will be a similar rating to the G9 since they use (From what i've read,) nearly identical lense/sensors?
And yet another review posted today. They are on a roll!
Hmm another canon compact camera! (would be nice for other makers to
get a look in too!)

I know, i know... it's coincidence i promise. And it gets worse (the
G9 is next) but then I promise that's the end of canon compacts for
now!

Still, it would be nice to standardize some tests across DSLRs and compacts, esp. for items that exist in both types of reviews. One that comes to mind is high ISO tests. If you feel that you don't want to expend the bandwidth on multiple crops and links to full images, at least provide a crop that exists on both DSLR and compact tests? That's not asking much--just move the DSLR crop up above the trees or the compact crop down to the trees...

It would also be nice to see focus and shutter lag timings for DSLRs as well as compacts... or just shutter lag, if the focus lag is deemed irrelevant due to the use of interchangeable lenses...

Joe,

That would be like subjecting a Ferrari and Volkswagen to the same testing. DSLRs are very feature rich while some P&S have only a PhD, push here dummy.

A570 review/ Page four/ Timing notes/ Action, the cam gets a bit too much credit for its zoom range ;)

BTW, good to see the reviews coming again and kudos for keeping them consistent despite training the new staff. The G9 is supposedly up next among the P&S, but can you give us any hint about the FZ18/ SP560/ S8000fd? Are they in the queue?

Thanks

Excuse me? With respect to high ISO, they are already both being tested on the same scene, they just arbitrarily decided to post a different crop for DSLRs than any crop taken on a compact. And digicams are on average faster than DSLRs for shutter lag, and some better digicams are already within striking range even for focus lag.

Note that in both cases it is the DSLR for which published results are missing or less detailed, when DSLR reviews are supposed to be most detailed.

BTW, why shouldn't you subject a Ferrari and Volkswagen to the same testing? Understandable if you're talking about features only available on the Ferrari, but here we're talking about performance attributes that apply to any car down to a Yugo. Would you have us test 0-100 for the VW on level asphalt and on a 45 degree uphill dirt road for the Ferrari? ;)

Three Canon reviews in a row. I can hear the whiners claiming Phil is biased towards Canon. Or maybe Canon sends him stuff to review quicker than the other companies?

Let's see what comes up next. The 40D review looks pretty good. I'll have to read the whole thing later today or tomorrow.

Just a touch better than Steve's digicams (joke! lol)

Well it took a while, but hell, the day we get that kinda of review, (steve's-aka it aint a review), its time to pack it up, get out the luger, and find a quiet corner to sit in! Click... ;-)

Its was worth the wait...even though it was frustrating for some

LoL they r on a roll what a joke ever since the takeover by Amazon
they have been slower than a dead snail with their reviews. Come on
where are the important reviews we r all waiting for. Eos 40d Sony
A700 both cameras r even on sale in UK now so that shows just how
behind DP r now with the reviews if we can buy the camera. ( Remeber
UK is always the last ones to get the cameras for sale).

Come on DP get your fingers out and give us the reviews that matter.
Boy...users of this forum are tough (and slightly spoiled) lot. I too have been waiting but come on guys (& gals) this is a free service and many of you act as though you've been paying big dollars and not getting your money's worth. If you don't like the service try to find something better...oh yea you've probably already looked just as I and found nothing to the dpreview standard. It's okay to be disappointed but I doubt that making it personal will generate quicker reviews. A bit of decorum and consideration goes along way.
