I just noticed that Park Cameras have provisional prices for the new SWD lenses on their site. Now, I know these are provisional - not their 'competitive' prices, but since their discounted prices don't seem at all generous, I guess they're a fairly good estimate of what the UK street prices will be:

http://www.parkcameras.com/ProductsList/mcs/CategoryID/70/GroupID/14/CatName/Four%20Thirds%20Fit/v/650923b3-1f1d-44ed-abc3-9a9c21352962

12-60 SWD: £769.99/~$1540
50-200 old school: £689/~$1378
50-200 SWD: £949.99/$1900
2x TCONV: £369.99/$700

So, if you are going to want a 12-60, it looks like it's well worth buying an E-3 at the same time ;)

What shocks me the most is that the 50-200SWD commands a £260/$520 premium over the non SWD version!

Does anyone know what the (street) prices for the glass in the US or Eurozone are going to be?

12-60 = $999

50-200 - $1199

edit looking over the link the prices for everything there seems to be at least 1.5x the US price. The 300/2.8 is double.

Fscking hell, the 12-60 and 50-200 are way overpriced... (should be used to that really, this stupid country really does suck!)

It seems to priced for 997e = 1400$ in a respected Olympus dealer but its not available until beiginning of 2008!!
E-3 body only 1747e end of november
E-3 12-60mm KIT 2647e end of november
E-3 12-60mm power KIT 2847e end of november

Someone is already selling those kits on ebay.de with similar prices.

A local dealer here in Finland has them listed with their usual 2-4 weeks delivery, which usually means the importer doesn't have in stock but expected soon...

Prices are:

50-200 (old) 999€
50-200 SWD 1364€ (!)
12-60 990€
EC-20 553€

So pretty bad. But I guess prices will drop till around spring or so after the first rushes...

Looks like Olympus is price skimming the early adopters.

Lets hope the prices fall after the initial rush, I really want an E-3 but these early prices are prohibitive (for me) and appear uncompetitive against the 40D.

It will be interesting to compare with the D300 prices when rit is released.

At 1900USD you could pick up the 35-100F2 !
Ahh, but they fix that problem by charging $3000/£1500 for it in the UK ;)

Currently the only fast lens I have is the 14-54 which cost me about £500/$1000, but did at least come with a free E-1 on the back ;)

I would really like to go a bit wider and a bit longer, so I was considering getting a 50-200 to keep my 40-150 mkI company, and either trading in the 14-54 towards a 12-60, or keeping it and getting an 11-22 as well.

As the 50-200 seems to be a bit slow in focusing, I was planning on getting the SWD version with a view to eventually getting an E-3, but an extra £250/$500 for a focusing motor, seems a bit crazy to me! I need to try a slow one to see if I could live with it!

If the 12-60 only makes sense pricewise in the UK as part of a kit (£600/$1200 in kit form £730/$1460 on its own), with an E-3, then I think I'll be either heading towards the 11-22 or just waiting until I can afford an E-3 kit.

Perhaps I should just save up for a trip to New York in the spring time - with about £500/$1000 to give to customs on my return home :(

this is why i buy my Oly stuff from Thailand when i go there, i go at least once a year and last time i got a 1.4 teleconverter for £200 new, hence no rush to buy anything over winter since i'll be going again in Feb/March.

These can't be "steady state" prices. They have to come down, Technikdirect (Germany) advertises the 50-200 SWD for 1300 €, and that seems to be the RRP (all the old prducts have a RRP number and an actual price, while this one has only this value).

So, I think that in a month or so the 50-200 SWD will be available for 1100 to 1200 € (still a lot of money!)

I am very tempted to go to one of the E-3 hands on days, and inquire about the UK lens prices infront of the Oly reps - I wonder if 'Chuffing Nora that's expensive compared to the US' will translate well into Japanese ;)

I do hope you're right, but I suspect you're not - the current prices of the old 50-200 don't seem to get discounted much at all :( Even a second hand one is £500/700E/$1000 (how do you do the Euro symbol on a UK keyboard?)

But I did make preparations.

I put a deposit down on an E-3 a while ago - whilst buying a 50-200mm on the 50 quid discount that everyone seemed to be offering to clear shelves for the new lenses.

The shop (not Park Cameras, but I prefer not to mention who) called me the other day, asking me which bundle I wanted. It was easy to go for the 12-60mm.

Three reasons:

1. Availability - in the early days, they may all be assigned to bundles anyway. Best to get one with the camera.

2. Fastest auto-focus claims. I've read the bumph, and know it only applies with this lens. I'll take a punt, as I'd like to see how fast "fastest" is... ;-)

3. I figured the introduction price would be higher than in the bundle. It certainly couldn't be lower without sheer incompetence at Olympus, and my gut told me there had to be a saving in a bundle somewhere ...

Nice to know that my ever-growing gut was right, but I like to think that the first two reasons were sufficient for me to get the E-3/12-60mm bundle anyway. I'm now just curious to see if I'm right on the first point as well... ;-)

Hence my buying mine from New York...

According to Pricerunner, it still is £779 at Jessops!

I think I shall be watching B&H's stock levels rather closely in the next few months, I'd prefer to buy locally in the UK, but I'd much, much rather have some cash to afford to be able to go somewhere with nicer weather with my cameras :)
