An idea: a lot of us on here have CD burners and USB ports on our computers. We could make a world-wide registry of DPReviewers who would be willing to help out fellow photographers in their travels. ie: you hit Toronto and whatever storage media you are using, as long as it's USB compatible, I meet you and download your pics, burn them onto CD for you and mail to your house. This clears out your storage and lets you take hundreds of glorious pictures of your trip.

If we got people in every major city to do this for each other, we'd solve a big problem! We'd also get to meet fellow photographers.

Hands up all those in favour, or is this just a "shot in the dark" idea? comments/suggestions?--Sandi

Sandi,

I thought a service like this would be very handy if cyber cafe's offered it for a nominal fee. I don't know if any do offer it, does anyone out there know?

Most cyber cafes don't offer this because (according to one owner), people are hard on the keyboards and computers to begin with, having a CD burner adds a greater expense and more people are inclined to break them. They jam them, they can't figure out the software 'cause they don't have it at home and they won't pay for CDs which they don't burn properly due to their mistakes. They then would have to have a supply of blank CDs and people then ***** about the prices they're charge for blanks (hey, someone's gotta pay for the owner inventorying them!). He said that, all in all, it was a very bad experience and he'll never do it again! Bummer!

buy a digital wallet. you can even use it in towns where computers haven't been invented yet.

As someone who enjoys meeting new people and making new friends I think this is a wonderful idea! I'm going to St. Louis in July and think it would be great if I had a bud I could call up and share my photos with, as well as burn a cd for myself.
Thanx,
Jim

That's how Dusty_D and I met - on this forum. We talk Coolpixes and Photoshop, he helps me with my puter, and we go out on pic taking excursions together. His gf doesn't mind (as I'm the same age as her mother! LOL ). You share ideas, take the same pic with different cameras and manipulate it differently in PS and then compare - lots of fun. When the sunny days come back to Toronto, we're going to do a "walking tour" of the city and take lots of pics of the downtown life.

I hooked up with an amateur photographer from Boston last year and we spent the day at Toronto Island taking pictures. The local natives know where the great pic taking spots are and you meet new people! I think it's a fabulous idea, myself. If you're ever coming to Toronto, look me up!
Cheers,

Sandi -

Another idea is one that I have employed locally. That is where a group of friends who need extra capacity for a special trip or event. We lend each other our surplus memory cards so that we have enough capacity when we travel without having to purchase all the memory. So far this has worked great. I have also used the cybercafe route in Paris and it worked for me, but there was some advance legwork required, and I brought my reader and drivers and blank CD's. The cybercafe was geat about it.

I am off to Britain with my "coop" cards and hopefully have all space I need.

Great idea, Wheel, Dusty_D and I have already agreed to this in case either one of us goes on a trip. I must admit, though, if I took a three week vacation and my love of photography now, I don't think I could borrow enough cards to hold all the pics I'd want to take! LOL Too bad camera stores don't rent digital wallets or something like this. That would be a good answer too! I just thought it would be fun to put faces to all our friends on dpreview here and help each other out.
Thanks for the input, Cheers

My real idea was to actually start a memory coop in our area and people could "deposit" and "withdraw" credits when they needed capacity. In the right place with the right people, it could work.

I still don't trust memory cards only since I take a lot of shots, I take an old ultralight Toshiba Portege 3110 laptop with me for offloading images!

Sandi, you can write anybody here just by clicking on the name, but for the record my addy is [email protected]. And I just had another thought! Now sometimes thinking isn't a strong suit lol, but how about this. If I maybe carry a couple of blank cd's when I travel, plus the usb cable for my camera (being as no drivers or downloads are needed to download the camera to computer) I just wonder if a person might stop in at a computer store, say a Best Buy or Circuit City, ask them if you can use one of their demos for oh, 10 minutes or so. Load your pics, burn a cd, delete the file and voila!! Of course meeting new friends would be much more fun lol, but this is a thought. And Sandi, anytime you get this way drop in and say hi, we'll have some fun!

Sandi,

Hmmm that is a good idea ..I think I would even pay a small fee for the service of unlimited storage or at least lunch..I know as far as myself I have a laptop external Hd and a usb burner...so I can meet you lets say at Dukes on waikiki beach ,we grab some lunch find a power outlet to plug in the usb and burn all of your wonderfull Hawaii images for the day ..

And as far as knowing all the

in spots to photo im sure we all do.And I am always looking for a buddy to hike through the rain forests ,climb scenic cliffs or search for that elusive Hawaiian Nene Goose..

I do like the idea..

Lets just be carefull ,
all are not who they seem...

Aloha,

I'm going to Hawaii and parts west for a month. My only solution is an older laptop. Hope it works through 5 plane rides- one cruise and much driving - many motels.

This is the link to the gallery. It has been a while since this site was started. Maybe bringing it to the front again will get more people involved.

Yes the laptop is a great idea. That's why I've pared my laptop right down, no Photoshop, no MS Office, only Word if I need it on the road and carry the install discs just in case I need the programs. That way, I can use it as one storage unit. But my HD is only 4GB and a month on the road would fill that sucker up FAST! Do I smell an HD upgrade coming??? get that little money vacuum cleaner out and stick the nozzle in my pocket again LOL

By the way, David, MAKE SURE your laptop is working ie battery charged up, before you hit the airport security. Not working, not taking - that's their policy! Sounds like a great trip - we're looking forward to your pictures - take some dazzlers for us! Cheers
