I got my E-300 just after it first came out, and although I've added an E-1 since then--and plan on getting the E-3 as well--I still use the E-300. Recently I've been experimenting with the E-300 and some old Nikkor glass I have left around, and have found that the little 20mm f3.5 is making an interesting street snapshot lens. With its 40mm (conversion factor) field of view and near pan-focal qualities beyond 2 meters, I can preset the focus and just walk around pointing it at scenes and shooting from the hip, without disturbing people by staring at them through the viewfinder. The results are a bit haphazard, as you can guess, but that kind of describes the street scene.

Here it is complete and black-taped for street cred :)

Here's just a couple of frames I got while walking around Shibuya (Tokyo) yesterday afternoon:

I have a few more online at my Peregrinor page "shot from the waste":

Cheers,

Really cool shots, and I love that you're using this amazing kit... so many people get dragged into the consumerism of leering over the latest bleeding edge kit - I wonder how much that has to do with Photography.

We've never been in a better time for picking up 'lagging edge' kit which outreaches our photographic skills imho... just see the Celebrating E1 thread for many examples!

Well Done, and please post many more!

Kind Regards

Brian

I do ocassionally the same, I have sld my Nikkor 20/4 but still have 24/2.8, this is not so wide but the results are similar.
Have only E-1 - a bit more bulky thus not so suitable for steet photos, but fun!
Keep posting this great "waste", love street shots, especially from Japan!

Oh, I have missed the link to your other "waste", thanks for sharing!
Great stuff, I feel almost like being there:)

When I go out shooting with my E-300 in Toronto, Canikon people I'm with (from a camera club) are surprised (pleasantly) that I shoot with Olympus and they go into how they used to own an OM...if Olympus had kept up improving and modernizing the OM, and then came up with a digital OM we'd have a lot more Oly users.

I don't know why people cover up the brand name of their cameras, including Canikons; if a thief was going to steal a camera off someone they would see that it's an SLR and just grab it, they wouldn't look up close first at the brand name or the model of the camera.

I admit I changed the "OLYMPUS" strap on my camera, but that was only because I found it uncomfortable (the material was too harsh on my neck) and instead got a Roots strap with padded pillows.

Wonderful! I've been thinking of buying an E-330 for precisely this purpose. Its flip-out LCD would make it even more useful.

Have you tried using a regular 14-45 lens with autofocus? Wide angle lenses have large depth of field but if you can operate AF 'in the blind', that might be more accurate.

The one photo accessory from the good old days that I still miss is a long shutter release cable that you can run from your hand, through the sleeve of your coat, to the camera, in order to release the shutter without anyone noticing it :) They do exist for digital cameras - I've seen them on eBay - but I haven't got one yet.

According to the compatibility chart at http://www.olympus-esystem.com/dea/products/compatibility.html , the RM-UC1 remote cable can be used with both the E-300 and E-330! I looked for the part number on eBay, and found several clones priced below $20. They operate in two stages, just like the shutter release button on the camera, so that it can pre-focus and meter before actually taking the shot.

Excellent stuff - just as I have been planning to do with the Leica R Super Angulon 21mm I have on the E330, using waist level LCD.

These older primes do seem to have a certain smoothness and depth that the new zooms don't quite match.

I have the 14-54 but not the 14-45. The trouble is both depth of field and overall size. The 20mm is nearly panfocal beyond 2 meters, while the zoom is more choosey. The 20mm is also quite small, so makes the whole setup less conspicuous.

I agree that the 330 with the flip-out lcd would make another good street setup; I have a friend in Thailand who bought one just for that purpose.
Thanks for looking in.

According to the compatibility chart at

RM-UC1 remote cable can be used with both the E-300 and E-330!
While the RM-UC1 can fit into the mini-B USB port, there are NO wires in the camera to support it...the UC1 has extra lines on the opposite side of the normal USB lines to provide support for the shutter controls, and the E-3x0 and E-500 don't have these lines! The UC1 is a dumb device that's just a switch...it's not a USB device and therefore won't work in any cameras except the E-4x0, 510, and E-3 (presumably).

This page was obviously written by a marketing person rather than a technical person who knows what they are talking about.

Yes the E-330 and E-500 have lines on the opposite side of the USB connector for video, unless they also have lines for the shutter control they can't use the UC1...and the E-300 DEFINITELY doesn't have extra lines for shutter control in there as there's not even lines for video on the mini-B; the E-300 used an 1/8" earphone jack for video, and it required the HLD-3 for the RM-CB1 wired remote.

The one photo accessory from the good old days that I still miss is a

Having done shooting from the waist myself, the least noticeable method is to have your camera over the shoulder and rest your hand on top of the camera...then you can activate the shutter without moving your hand...it's only the sound of the shutter that gives you away (unless you don't disable the focus beep).

But that's disappointing.. I thought it would be fun to use a shutter release cable. Too bad that they didn't implement this option. In the analog days, I've never had a camera that did not have it.

I've checked the eBay adverts and they confirm what you are saying.. the RM-UC1 clone cords that are being offered support only these models:

SP-510UZ, SP-550UZ, SP-560UZ, E-400, E-410, E-510.

Thanks, Adam. Yeah, I think she was doing her "hard" impression that day.

... with the E-330. I do like that waist-level capability.

This is a lame BW conversion (done quickly with Picasa) but I liked this odd old guy on the Metro:

Thanks much, Brian. This has been good for me in two ways, one in the use of the prime lens, and two since I'm disciplining myself not to use color at all with these. I've decided--for a while at least--to set the camera on B/W rather than doing pp conversions; I can still do quite a bit of adjustment on the b/w image just using CS3, however. But seeing the immediate in-camera results in b/w gives me a real feeling of being back with Tri-X.

Thanks, Dave. Nice old guy you got; reminds me a bit of the Tokyo subways late at night.

You probably wrote "waste" on purpose. If not, and if nobody else mentioned it (I haven't read the whole thread), I'll just point out that perhaps you really mean "waist".
