I just got the 40d! I thought this would be the greatest experience, but no dice.

The display model worked beautifully... however, I got mine home today, put the lens onto the camera, and the AF refuses to work.

I've been shooting for the past 45 mins... and i'll set the lens out of focus and attempt to take a picture, pushing the shutter 1/2 way then fully... no way. refuses to focus!

Any ideas? Anyone else with this problem? Oh, I seem to get Err99 quite often too... just out of the box! less than 100 shots!

If i focus it manually, the camera takes the picture. Please help.

thanks

Settings - out of the box... dial set to manual, aperature tried them all, shutter speed 15, 20, 30, tons others, focus points - center, side, etc., AWB, all drive modes... no luck. thanks for your help

You do have the AF/MF switch on the lens set to AF, right?

oh yeah... i'd like to also add that I hear the motor running... just nothing's happening w/ the lens. just sits there.

OK, let's cover all the bases....your did properly charge the battery, made sure the AF switch on the lens is on and clean contacts with the lens properly mounted right?

clean the contacts? I didn't touch anything... carefully took the camera out of the box, removed the lens covers and mounted the lens onto the body.

battery - i left it on the charger for about 3 hours as i ran errands

That's all I've done for now. Thanks for your help

Try this: switch the camera off, remove the lens. Then pop the lens back on, making sure IS and AF are both ON. Switch the camera on. The IS should initialise with a slight motor humm, almost a scratching noise.

If you don't hea this noise, double check that IS is ON. If it is, wiggle the camera slightly up and down. the IS should be going beserk. If it's not, could mean you have a dead lens.

Only asked if the contacts on the camera and lens were clean....no dust or little pieces of packaging material on them. Sometimes little pieces of paper or foam can stick around the contacts because of static electricity. Just making sure something as minor is that is not overlooked.

Your welcome.....and I hope things work out with your camera or you may need to get it replaced.

Did you try a different lens to see if it is truly the camera or the lens?

No dice... I turned off camera... and took off the lens... poped it back on... IS and AF both on.

turned it on.. .heard nothing... however, depressing the shutter 1/2 way, i could hear the IS motor going. The lens however, never focused on anything i aimed it at. Is this common to have a lens that's bad from the get go?

Thanks

Thanks. I don't have another lens at the moment... first dslr. bummer. I guess I'm heading on back tomorrow to the store. I actually purchased this for a big trip coming up on friday... now i don't have a camera for it! ack!

I'll keep trying. Thanks for the help and confirmation that I'm not going nuts.

You're welcome, and keep the chin up....hopefully the store will set you up with a working camera and lens. When it's all said and done, you'll be glad you bought the 40D....it's an awesome camera!!!

Silly question, but does the focus square light up when you try focus, and do you hear the focus beep?

If yes, try adjust the little diopter dial on the right side of the viewfinder.

If you got if from a local store, you may still have your camera in time for your trip Friday. If you just got it, they should just swap out the whole kit and give you a new one.

Good luck.

the focus square does light up and i do hear a beep... however, if/when the picture does take, it's as the viewfinder sees it... blurred.

If you hear a noise from the IS, the AF lights are lighting up, I would say a faulty lens. Too bad you do not have a second one to test.. When the IS is moving, you have an electric link from the camera to the lens. Also if you can choose the right aperture for the lens (3.5 for 28mm and so on) or if it show directly when you mount the lens a nummber and not 00. Then you have already many contacts that work. And then I think the cameras are more checked than the lenses.

yeah, it's just a shame it's from circuit city and it'll take days to get another one. I'm going to ask for a brand new one. In the meantime, I'm going to keep this one so I can travel this weekend and take photos, damn manual focus, but hey, better than no camera!

thanks for your help
Whatever it is, it doesn't sound good - not from a brand new camera.

Take it back - pronto - and exchange it if you can. Even if you
resolve the matter, it may only stay resolved for a brief time. I
wouldn't risk keeping it.
