400D (XTi) Underexposure - Is the issue over? Serial Numbers?

Hi Yaamon,

Thanks! That's great that you got your friend's serial number - that is an important data point - now we have 122.... serial numbers as potentially "safe". Everybody should feel free to update the list - we can call them list v.0.1, 0.2, etc.

As more info comes in, I'll also update it - It's likely imbsysop's camera is a 120... too and probably from Aug. 07 of this year (not UXing either). I'll update the list if I can get him to confirm this.

Thanks again,
-Alex
Hi Alex, I updated your list hope you did not mind with my friend

Think the Aug one should be 120XXXX and it is not ux'ing

Mine is ux'ing, not fixed by a first repair .. will send it in to
another repair shop .. FWIW
Ah! That makes more sense. So I had them reversed in the list above, right? Can you please confirm that this is correct (below)? Also, just out of curiousity - do you know where your first repair went to? (though considering also as an additional factor besides location that they might not have had the tools to repair it yet then).

Last summer I purchased a 400D for people shooting (also have 5D). When I discovered underexposure in comparison to a 350D I gave my daughter I tried this: switched metering mode from evaluative to center weighted and use either +i/3 or +2/3 exposure compensation depending on shooting situation. So far, most exposures have been acceptable.

Just a suggestion....

If there was a problem, Canon probably fixed it in silence and the newer cameras will be OK. I bought one three weeks ago and the exposure is fine (of course this is no guarantee ;) )

I bought my XTi on January 30, 2007 from B&H Photo and it exhibited the underexposure problem too.
SN#: 062038xxxx.

Was successfully repaired by the Canon Service center in Jamesburg, NJ about a month ago.

I only got it this past spring and from a dealer with great turnover to boot (B&H). As a matter of fact I'm getting the most accurate exposure I've ever gotten from ANY camera. My 350D Overexposes a bit.

I tend to believe the theory that manufacturers quietly fix problems (or tighten quality assurance) over a period of time. Certainly more economic then continuing to service them.

Kurt

Yes that's true and I do regard my XTi as exposing correctly according to the way it is set up. Like you say, I routinely dial in 1/4 to 1/3 minus exposure compensation with all my cameras. I think that has always been best for my bright sky Montana shooting. Back in the D30 and D60 days, though, it probably wasn't necessary.

this is my first major camera. 400D purchased the end of August 07. at a Bestbuy in central coast California.

serial number starts 14208xxxxx

Indoors the camera works great and its only outdoors at the beach that I have trouble with unders and overs so I believe thats my own mistakes trying to cram the sky and dark hills in at the same time :)

So I'd consider mine good til otherwise noted. This whole reading of issues really worried me but glad I hear most new batches are alright.

Ok,

Here's the updated list. Please feel free to edit it as you wish. Basically it looks more and more like the new batch of XTi are exposing correctly. At least 7 people who have bought the XTi/400D since May/June 07 report no underexposure(UX) problem at all. As far as serial numbers, Dave Brown reports that 0920406xxx bought in May 07 does not UX, although he goes on to say that he prefers underexposure anyway... Also, udaman with a slighly newer serial # (0920413874) reports a UX issue, which was successfully fixed in NJ. So a slighly higher number may be safer. The next number on our list is 120xxxx, showing no UX. So somewhere between 09xxx and 120xxx is probably when the new, "safer" batches began being produced.

This has been a helpful exercise for me - I not only feel more confident in recommending the 400D to my friend but I would consider it myself now, especially, as someone noted, if you buy from a vendor with high turnover, like B&H. I hope this will be of use for others too! Thanks for all the contributions and feel free to add more data so we can try to narrow down the serial numbers further!

Cheers,
-Alex
