A first for me (SPORTS)

I'd say you did an excellent job. this is my favorite type of photography. thanks for sharing them, Robert

Excellent shots, especially for a first try! Soccer is a hard sport to capture in any kind of meaningful way. It gets harder and harder as the field gets bigger and bigger. A small pitch used for 6 v. 6 is not bad, but the larger field used for 8 v. 8 is much more difficult. My daughter's team just played their first tournament this weekend in Memphis in an 11 v. 11 bracket, with a field almost twice as big again, and my 70-300 VR got quite a workout - it wasn't big enough to fully cover the field unless I moved around a lot to get the best shots, even assuming the play was oriented in a favorable angle. I shot a few hundred exposures but haven't had time to pick the best yet.

The keeper making a kickoff following a goal kick is always dramatic, however.

Corner kicks are fun too:

Watching my almost-12 year old daughter (#5) being body-checked off the ball is kind of painful, however - LOL:

Were these handheld? Also, if you don't mind me asking, what would you say a fair price for an very good/excellent rated push/pull version of the 80-200 2.8 be?

Awesome shots... very sharp and contrasty.
A friend called and asked me to take some pictures of his daughters
soccer team. All I had with me was my 80-200 2.8 push pull lens and
my D80. I gave it my best shot with what I had with me.

Nikon D50
18-55mm & 18-200mmVR

Thanks. I used a monopod on these. I would say around 500.00 would be a good price for this lens used.

My local shop has (maybe had one last week) one that looks brand new for $450. If I didn't have an 80-200 AFS I would have snapped it up with the other lenses I purchased.

Tech,
All are very good shots. I like the last one the most. It is very dynamic

Kids soccer is a good environment to shoot sports. Unlike other sports, you can get right along the baseline for some good close in work. Thanks for showing your work.

Well done!

Mind to share which focus setting did you use? Did you keep center focusing and recompose or selected different focus points or let camera select?

I find it very good when you have your main subject all on one side entering the frame and perfectly on focus...

Thanks I used afc and center focus point.

Thanks Dez. I used matrix metering and my aperature was from f4 to f8. The sun was in and out and I had to watch my exposure alot.
Pretty good Tech. I think this is the 1st time you've posted
something other than birds or wildlife, lol ;)

You had plenty of light to freeze the action. Which metering mode did
you use? And what aperture?
