BANNED --

1. Anonymous voting.

2. Voting for your own entries.

3. "Stacking" the vote. Although anybody and everybody is encouraged to vote, do not ask friends and family to vote for your pictures. Because we use a "Voting Booth" we can, if needed, track votes by IP address or by ISP. Stacking the vote is easily detected!

4. Please do not delete or replace your entries once voting has started. Doing do might get you banned from the challenges for up to 6months. If you have any questions please email an admin at

Have fun everyone!

For setting up the part two thread & the voting thread while I was in bed or at work.
Me boss reckons there's not much difference:-)
Thanks again.

Regards Rod

The quality of all your entries was a sight for sore eyes, excellent picys from everyone.

There were a few entries posted in Eligible that I haven't seen until after the challenge has closed & only the Red Rice picy would have been called off topic as it's more a shot of toes than patterns to me.

So well done everyone you can all pat yourselves on the back for the great gallery you have created. I'm very impressed.
Regards Rod

Here's the thumbs for the shots you mention, I think these are the ones as I had to use some guesswork with the titles you gave.
Mayo Skylight

Daisy

Pumpkin

Spider Web

Radial Light Fixture

Starfish

And your shot of the Ferris Wheel

Just looking at the thumbs above they all except your shot say pattern upon first viewing to me (knowing the topic is patterns) Your shot of the Ferris wheel requires us to look for patterns which is off topic. I don't know how much you followed the challenge comments which as time wore on made things a lot clearer to most posters I hope. There were far less off topic shots in this challenge than the other couple I have run so I imagine it was clear to most as we progressed.

I had to act quickly on your late posting so it didn't go to the voting phase which is the risk late posters take. With Vince's off topic Red Rice feet shot which was posted later than yours, it ended up in the voting phase as I didn't see it until it was too late. So timing is the key:-)

Mikey's first Daisy shot with a roughly similar composition as your Ferris wheel was deemed off topic & he reposted the daisy shot you see here which emphasises the pattern as per my topic description.

Regards Rod

Well done Rod that was an interesting challenge as can be seen by the excellent response and the amount of shots entered!

After having a busy week and not getting much PC time, I was accumulating some ideas that I thought would be unique!, I was astonished to see there were already similar shots posted! :). The galleries look great though and there is a high standard, its going to be difficult to vote on this lot.

I also have not managed much commenting due to a busy week at work, its terrible that I seem to make most of my comments, whilst at work ;)

All the others are shot flat on. We all know the ferris wheel's pattern is there, but we only know that b/c we know ferris wheels. If an alien arrived in this forum, unfamiliar with ferris wheels, he would be clueless as to the pattern in your shot. :)

Please visit my gallery at http://www.flickr.com/photos/graphicdetails/
and offer your comments. I love a good critique!

Perhaps a separate thread to announce this Speed Challenge... so all will see and participate?

Sounds fun!

Life is good... even when it's not.

I'll admit, I emailed my spider pic to my dad (which was my favorite out of the three I posted), and he didn't really think it was a pattern shot. He must be on the same wavelength as Rod.

Thanks to Rod for your job of hosting. Hopefully you have set a trend and created a new generation of hosts that are willing to speak up if they feel that an image is not quite what they had in mind for the topic. Great job Rod. And thanks for not dropping the axe on my shots.

A stellar gallery has been created. Many, many pics worthy of votes. Most everyone kept the "found" in their patterns which made my decisions that much harder. I normally weigh my votes heavily and try to choose pictures that are spot on topic. In this case most were. Difficult.

I would also like to welcome the newcomers. I hope you stick around and continue to contribute. It seems not that long ago I was one of them.

I faced the same dilemma. Was unable to weigh my votes and voted equally for all in both exhibition and eligible gallery. Great pics for a great topic.

Some off topic decisions were quite hard to make without a technical reason to offer up, I was mostly going by a visual feel. But we got there in the end with most of us still friends:-)
