I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Being new to digital photography I had just completed my research and was about to plunk my $ down when the anounncement of the D7i came out./ So I will wait to they are availiable, hopefully in early June up here in Canada. However I have a few Questions about improvements.

1.) Does the 7i still use its own color space and just use sRGB on the images it sends to the EVF and LCD. What program is the best to convert Minolta colorspace to SRGB?

2.) Has Minolta really addressed the battery consumption issue?

3.) Have image noise levels been imporoved?

4.) Has Minolta added an Af assist lamp for night shots.

IS the D7/7i as sharp as the Sony 707. Some say it usesthe same CCD.

Thanks for all the help. This forum is great!!

Yes. I use Photoshop Elements & convert to Adobe RGB
2.) Has Minolta really addressed the battery consumption issue?
No. There isn't a battery consumption issue if you use 1600-1800 NiMH batteries.
3.) Have image noise levels been imporoved?
Maybe. They may have added noise reduction features.
4.) Has Minolta added an Af assist lamp for night shots.
I don't think so.

It does use the same CCD.

I've been looking at buying either the D7i or sony dsc-f707. Have a look
at the "comparometer" on http://www.imaging-resource.com .
You'll see that the 707 is slightly sharper than the D7 and slightly
less noise. But a bit more saturated than the D7.
Wait a bit longer and there should be a D7i up there once released.

Brice,

I may be interested in the D7i, but have been put off my the "color space" issue. I have Photoshop Elements, is it difficult or time consuming to convert to Adobe RGB?

(I'm another Elements user...)

Its not difficult at all: DIVU can output to AdobeRGB. Its no more time consuming than converting to sRGB. Many Photoshop (rather than Elements) users simply set their working space to AdobeRGB and import the unprocessed JPG file - this is much quicker, but loses the finer details of the colourspace conversion.

All that said, I get excellent results from sRGB!

I am also thinking of either the 707 or the D7/D7i. What are your opinions? Should I bother getting the D7i over the D7? What are the advantages of the 7i and the Sony 707 over the D7? Anything will be helpful, I have been researching cameras for the past three months trying to decide what to get! Thanks in advance...

Well I might have gotten a 707
but it doesn't take compact flash!
You don't know the power of a GIG MICRODRIVE!

I'm waiting for the 7i to come out to decide between it and the 707. I very much like the longer zoom range, but have the usual questions about battery life and so on. The 707 seems less like a work in progress vs. the 7/7i. Will have to get my hands on a 7i and see what I think.

The salesman at Adorama here in NYC was very down on Minolta for digicams. He felt the Sony was a much better choice.

I'm slightly more in favour of getting the sony but mainly because I have 180mb of smartcards for sony from owning a 505v before. I've tried to list what the advantages of each are.

I think the the d7/d7i has in its favour:
Microdrive usage for storage (707v uses expensive sony cards)
Allows continious drive. (707v only 3 frames at a go)
Better wide angle and telephoto 28mm upto 200mm (707v 38 to 190mm)
Accurate colouring.
faster shutter speed 1/4000sec (707v upto 1/1000sec)

and Sony 707v has:
Clearer images (in my opinion)
V.good lens.
Longer battery life
V.Good viewfinder
Hologram laser autofocus (to focus in dark conditions)
Nightvision
multimedia ie sound and mpeg recording. (d7i has similar)

I think if the d7i has improved noise reduction and the quality matches
the 707v then I may get the d7i. As it stands I'd have the 707v over the D7.

unfortunately we do not have camera having all these features together (of course in this price range). the best choice would be something like this: "MinSon 7i07". but i don't think our dream will go thru to quickly.
so far we have price war for dimage7: http://www.pricescan.com/digiphoto/scripts/Q08010100_I.asp

so, we may should think about it instead of double priced 7i. but, how always, we have to pay high price for any new products.
(my heart belongs to 7i in 99%).

Part of the decision for me is based on the lower price that the D7 is available for now $700 in comparison for what $500 more for a D7i will bring me. I think the D7 will be a great step up from a Kodak 210+ and maybe, just maybe I can wait for a Minota SLR that will fit my Minolta lens collection. If my lenses would fit the new Canon D60 I would probably go for it, but I cannot justify the additional expense for the telephotos I desire.
