Does the 24-105 L accept a Teleconverter?

The Canon site says their 1.4 TC is not compatible with the 24-105L IS USM. Is there a third-party TC that will work with this lens? If so, does anyone have any experience with this combo (sharpness, vignetting)? Thanks.

Yes, it does. I used a kenko pro 300 with it (1.4x TC). IQ is ok. I didn't pixel peep, but offhand there was little loss at 105mm. I didn't look at the 24mm or other FL though. I tried it just to see what I can get for emergencies where I don't have a long lens but have to put a TC on the 24-105L.

There's no advantage to using the Kenko on the 24-105 wide open on a 1.6-crop camera. However, by f8, the advantage is pretty significant.

True. But as I said, I just tried it for emergencies. I have no intent of using the lens with TCs. However, it was pretty decent considering it had a TC on. At f4 (f5.6 with a TC it was ok in the center). A bit better at f5.6 (f8 with a TC). I didn't go to f8 (f11 with a TC) anymore because the shutter speeds were already too low and I just wanted a quick glance at it wide open and 1 stop down.

The OP also was just asking if it is possible and in my experience it is. BTW, nice examples to illustrate your point!

Thanks guys. Reason for my question was that I'm going on a trip with my 20D and want to travel light. I own the 70-200 F4L and a couple of non-L lenses, but I'm thinking that a 24-105 F4L IS, plus a 1.4 TC, would get me by. Certainly for all the landscape shots (San Francisco & Santa Fe, NM)

Has anybody tried other conveters such as the Canon or Sigma with the 24-105? I'm guessing that the results may be different?

The main questions I would have are:
  • How does the AF perform?
  • Does IS still work?
  • By how much is the IQ affected?
If the IQ is affected significantly then you may find a consumer lens like the Sigma 70-300 apo or Canon 70-300IS may offer better image quality and performance even if they are not L class - I hope that makes sense!
