I've tried several to get ViewNX to run on my PC, Win XP sp2, 3gig CPU, 1 meg'o'ram but it will not lunch. I can't even tell if it get installed because the progress bar never seems to go away but the icom is there. I reboot the computer and hit the icon , I get the hourglass for about 10 sec then nothing. I've read this same issue from other users. I gather my system is 16 bit, it's 3 years old. Does it possibly only run on 32bit machines?

Quite frustrating

Thanks

I get the same thing on a 32-bit VISTA machine. I've spent several mandays trying different approaches (some very technical) but none work, so don't waste your time.

I've been in contact (3Xs) with Nikon about this and they now think there is a bug somewhere. Please contact Nikon as your configuration is different than mine and it should help them to know that. Otherwise, Nikon's advice is to wait until the next release.

I'll take your word for that.. i received an emial from Nikon suggesting setting up an Administrator account (which I already have) then exiting any running apps like anti-virus. and so on. But that didn't make any difference. So I'm waiting for a reply from Nikon to see what to try next

Thanks

Steve

Had this same problem
If you have any HP printer software uninstall that first then reinstall View NX.
This worked on my machine.
I could never get the old Capture 4 and the edit function of old view 6 to work
Now they work fine
Hope this helps

This sounded hopeful as I do have an HP printer. So I went to the Printer Control window and deleted it (I think that is an uninstall). However I got the same unsuccessful result. I'm glad it worked for you - how did you ever think of it?

I wonder if you guys have your problems resolved. I just downloaded it, and installed and used it without any hitch. I do notice that it is a bit slower than Nikon View. It seems that it is a better picture management system since I can add notes and ratings, and can launch editing software from it.

If any of you have been using it, I would like to hear you opinion of it.

I didn't have a problem either. I liked View 6 better because View 6 will copy the exif data to the IPTC comment field when transfering files from the chip to the computer and View NX doesn't have that feature. I too thought the transfer process was slower than View 6 and required more inputs from me. After a couple of days I deleted View NX and re-installed View 6.

I still have not been able to install it despite a lot of useful help from Nikon. I did use View for a while but not now. I think I'll just stick with PSE 4. I'lm still interested in installing View NX as I would like to discover why it is blocked, but the "free" software has cost me a lot of time.

I played with it some more this evening. It is just too slow for me as a viewer. As an editor, it cannot do much. I have gone back to View 6.

IMHO you are not missing much.
Perhaps if you just wait for the update, you will have more success.
After all, it is version "1.0.0" ;-)

All you did here is remove the printer port, you didn't remove any software. You need to go into control panel and select add/remove programs and uninstall the HP printer drivers and programs then try again with ViewNX.

I installed it recently on Vista without a hitch and I have a ton of security apps installed including Windows Defender, Zone Alarm and two Anti Virus apps. No problems here.

I dont know if it matters but be sure your "helper" apps are up to date such as the .NET framework, etc.

Does View NX, like Capture NX, require that the .NET framework be installed on the computer? I didn't think so, and I didn't see anything that said you needed .NET, but I suppose it is a possibility.

I have installed it on my MacBook Pro's MacOSX without any problem. I find it a very fast and usable viewer for my .NEF files, actually even faster than LightRoom 1.2 The other thing is that it renders my NEF files much better than LightRoom (D70 and D80 files), better colour, less noise, higher resolution. I recently purchased Capture NX and you can launch that from ViewNX very easily and do your edits. All the raw adjustments and edits (even the control points) are stored in the .NEF file and View NX is able to show the edited final result.

All in all I think the combo is great, I am seriously thinking about stepping away from LightRoom, although LightRoom has never crashed upon me, while View NX has....

cheers,
Frank

I didn't remove the hp drivers all I removed was the photo editing software that came with the hp printer. I didn't use it anyway.

It was obvious something on my system was conflicting with the launch of the nikon software. I could tell it installed and was trying to run but never would complete enough to show on screen. It was running as a process in windows task manager. Uninstall any hp software not drivers and try again.

I have a part-time photo business and most of my pictures are nearly spot on out of the camera. I do almost all of my viewing/editing with Nikon View and Capture 4.4. I d/l and tried View NX without a problem. I was not impressed with it, at least so far. I will give it another test or two but in the mean time I am continuing to use View 6.2.X and Capture 4.4.

You're right thanks. I didn't use add/delete, instead I used HP's uninstall program. It deleted a bunch of files and registry entries, then aborted. I deleted the rest of the Program Files/HP folder and then installed View NX without incident.
Ah! The joys of Vista!

I doubt it completely installed, at least on my computer. It was close (98%?), but did not always leave an icon for example. I suspect something was missing and that might explain why ViewNX.exe never fully loaded.

I'm not sure if the HP software blocked the install from completing or blocked the exe from loading.
