Which of the 3 should i buy for my 350d and a "walk around" and why... I haver read reviews on all of them and they all seem to have there strengths and weakness's. i am leaning towards the canon. a little less range, but from what i read optically it seems to be better.

these are the lens's in my price range..

thanks in advance

Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM
Sigma Lens 18-125mm F3.5-5.6 DC
Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC

I'm also looking for a good walk-around lens and have basically come to the conclusion that the 28-105mm may not be wide enough for me. With the APS-C sensor, it will appear to have a focal length of 45-168mm according to Canon's lens spec sheet.

I'm currently leaning towards the Canon 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM (27-136mm) as, looking through shots I've taken with other cameras, many tended to be at the widest limits of those setups.

how aobut instead of getting another lens, i do one of these 2 things

1. replace my sigma 70-300 with the canon 70-200F/4 L (better quality)
or

2. replace my kit lens with a 17-85 sigma? canon? What is a good lens at a good price for this replcement?

i think getting another lens as a "walk around" is a waste of money seeing what i already have.

agree?

What is your subject matter? If you take pictures mostly of people, the 28-105 might work without having wide angle. However, for general pictures (e.g., travel), you would want more range, so one of the Sigmas would be more suitable.

Of these lenses, I would choose the Sigma 18-125. I had the 18-200, and found that it was very soft at the edges at the long end, so not really worth paying extra for over the 18-125.

Personally, I would definitely select the Canon lens over the others.

Why?
  1. 1 I have heard great things regarding the quality of the Canon EF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM.
  1. 2 28-105 it is a great range for a walk around lens combination.
  1. 3 The Canon lens is faster than the other two you have under consideration. You will especially appreciate its better speed when shooting in lower light and indoors.
  1. 4 The Canon is USM - fast and quiet - whereas the Sigma are not HSM so they may be slower and noisier.
Also, (and this is strictly a personal opinion) I do not like any lens manufacturer trying to cram everything into one package, as the Sigma 18-200 is doing. Something has got to give to try and make something like this work and already the lens speed sux being a f/3.5-6.3. I am sure image quality/contrast/barrel distortion/vignetting, etc. is somewhat lacking in one or more of these characteristics as well in comparison to the Canon EF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM.

I myself would go for a non super zoom, ie a 18 or 17-50mm f/2.8 from either sigma or tamron. If you can spend more, get the canon 17-55 IS f/2.8.

Replacing the sigma with a canon 70-200L is a good choice, as is the canon 70-300 IS non DO or 100-400 if you can stretch it, it also depends what you shoot most.

Usually if the zoom factor is higher than 4x, the quality will suffer, esp. with consumer grade glass.

Good luck choosing!

For two years I used the Canon 28-105 f3.5-4.5 USM as a walk-around lens on my 300D. It is one of Canon's best "consumer" lenses. From f5.6 down it is as sharp as my 50 mm f1.8. The autofocus is lightning fast. It is a great protrait lens. As others have pointed out, it does not have wide-angle capabilities. I used to solve this problem by just throwing the light compact kit lens in my pocket for those cases when I needed wide angle.

Hope this helps
