Bye Bye, G2

I agree that the more you pay for something, the more you want to baby it however I am also of the opinion that things are made for us to USE so I USE my cameras and if they happen to get damaged, I feel bad but get them repaired or replaced. Its the price you pay for playing the game whether its photography or sports whatever, nothing in this life is cheap anymore.
I took my beloved G2 to the camera shop today so they could ship it
to Canon and get it repaired. I suspect it will be weeks until I
see it again.

Isn't it funny how... the more you pay for something, and the more
conscious you are of its safety and condition, the more likely you
are to damage it?

I'm sure if I had walked next to a boiled pit of molten lava, my G2
would've jumped from my hands, and plummeted to its ultimate demise.

I spent a month running around taking pictures without a protective
carrying case. I thought, "Geez, I should really get a case for
this thing, or something is going to happen." Well, I went out and
got a padded carrying case, and until then, nothing happened!

Rest-assured, once it was in that padded carrying case, I started
dropping it, and lobbing errant horseshoes at it. Yes...
horseshoes. I can barely hit the opposite stake, and yet I scored
a ringer around my camera bag.

I didn't know whether I should take it to a camera shop, or an
automotive body shop. The failure of the camera wasn't
catastrophic. The flash simply stopped working, but the dented
exterior of the camera was much more impressive.

I don't have a point. I'm just sharing my misfortune. Please keep
your fingers crossed that the repair is quick and relatively
painless!

I have an S10 which I dropped from high enough to bend the casing. It still works fine though!!

I look on this as a great plus for Canon cameras vs the plastic cases of some competitors.....

No quote yet. I called my camera shop yesterday, and they said they have yet to hear from Canon, but they'll call me right away. Although it has been a week since I dropped it off at the camera shop, Canon has probably had the camera for no more than a few days.

I really need the Camera for an event on April 27th, too. If the G2 isn't back by then, I'm going to need to use a .8MP Mavica! I don't think its looking too good for that deadline. I could be stuck popping floppies.
Still no quote on cost of repair?--Chris (JeepCache) http://www.s5di.com/cshontz

Hi everyone,

Yeah, what is it with dropping the camera once you have it in a bag? Mine was accidentially pushed out of my camera bag last week - causing a crack and a few scatches - nothing more thank goodness. So can you buy the back side as a plastic spare? That would be really good. Silly me for taking the camera back to the pub with me after a concert! hahaha! Serves me right. Out with the superglue methinks. Waiting to hear back from Canon Australia to see what can be done. Urgh! More money!

http://b2s_oz_nz.tripod.com - my recent concert photos are taken with my G2 - not bad!

Maybe your point is that if you had a Nikon ..... I also find the crack issue unacceptable, and although I recognise Canon digital quality I'm sure Nikon will catch up. And the D100 is the first step !!

Hi there,

Make sure to call them daily and hound them. I shipped my camera off two weeks ago, and called them a week ago inquiring on the status. They took my phone number and said, 'We'll call you back'. Days passed and no call, so after four or five persistent calls on my part, I finally got an answer today. They told me they were awaiting my approval to go ahead with repairs! Ah! I couldn't believe it! This was after days of "Computers are down" and other worthless replies from them. But my G1 was out of warranty, so maybe you won't have this problem. And hopefully, your camera won't completely die on you two months after the warranty expires!
10 days have passed

I think you should call Canon and find out what's going on with your camera. That's what I did when I sent it in the first time for repair anyway. Did you send it to the Service Center in Illinois? If so, the number is 630-250-6500.
Here is a picture of the visible damage. I used it like this for a
couple of months without any problems. Hitting the camera with a
horseshoe is finally what caused the flash to stop working.
