Canon 17-55 2.8 As Walk Around

What is the opinion of the Canon 17-55 2.6 as a walk around.
Bobbert,
This is my walk around lens, I use it 85% of the time on my 20D.

My opinion it that it's excellent, the best mid-range, all purpose zoom for a cropped camera.
I have owned it and used it almost constantly for 16 months.

...and I have owned the 17-85 (not so good, high CA) and the 24-105 (great lens, but not as suitable as a walk around as it's not wide enough for me on a cropped camera [required a lot of lens swapping]).

  • never fogged once on me, either in or outside of Disneyland :-)
  • weather is hit and miss in December but you won't get snow except MAYBE 1-2 days all winter.
  • rest of Paris - Perfect lens IMHO. Could add a 10-22 (my next lens) for those panoramas/landscapes.

How about the rest of Paris?
I recommend you get a hand strap for your 30D - I got the Canon one +
the plate from camdapter.com - this way the camera mostly stays in my
hand without tiring me...

What is the opinion of the Canon 17-55 2.6 as a walk around. I
have a a 30D and am taking a trip with my family (wife and kids)
and friends to Disney World. Would this be a good lens?

I'm looking to buy this lens as my walk-around replacement to the kit 18-55. I think it will be a great addition to the 60/2.8 macro and 70-300 IS I currently have. Alternatively I'm looking at the 17-50/2.8 Tamron, but I think I'd like the USM, IS, Canon, possibly better IQ enough to justify the cost for a lens I'll keep for a long time.

Only things that concern me are cost and weight over the Tamron.

One thing too- the Canon Canada and Europe fall rebates both list this lens for a discount. I think I'll wait a week or so and see if I can save some $$.

Any more thoughts?

If you can't get your hands on the Canon 15-250 f1.8 IS then this is
probably a good walk about, particularly for Disneyland where you're
in a lot of close quarters and have big rides to shoot. I recently
got a 40D and that lens and I like it very much.
Do you mean the EF-s 15-250 f/1.8 IS lol
Correct the 17-55 is the best right now nothing tops it for the croppers

I wish mine wasn't a crop duster
