Hi,

If a macro lens state magnification is 1:2.3,
what does it mean ?

if my camera sensor diagonal is 23mm,
and i shoot on a ruler,
it means i can capture 0-10mm of the scale ?

Tks

the sensor is 23mm wide, with a lens that has a magnification of 1:2.3
something that is 23 (sensor) * 2.3(magnification) = 52.9mm wide fills the frame

so with a 1:1 macro lens, something that is 23mm wide fills the frame.
hope that's all clear, kinda hard to write math stuff in english ;)

For a zoom lens,
does it mean you will get the max mag when fully zoom in ?

Usually it refers to the magnification you get when at longest focal length and minimum focus distance. If you start playing with the math, you should be aware that the focal length of some lenses changes with focus distance such that, for example, the 18-200 at the "200" setting and closest focus distance isn't actually a 200mm lens anymore but something shorter.
