Hey all

We just returned home to Germany from an 8-days-trip to New York City - and since there's this world famous B&H shop at 9th Ave, we had to visit them of course (well I had - my wife would have been fine without stopping there, I guess...)

We left the shop with a brand new Panasonic FZ18, replacement for my wife's FZ5 (first she did not really want a new camera, but she loves the super zoom and as soon as she heard that the new one's got an 18x lens instead of her old 12x, she had been convinced ;o) )

During the following week we shot abut 800 pictures with that new toy - and we both love it.

Here are our first impressions:
  • Size is very good. Just a little bigger and a tad heavier than the FZ5, but not that much. Still fits into my wife's handbag (most important) and she says handling is even better than it was with her old camera
  • The lens is amazing. Sharp from edge to edge, no noticeable distortions throughout the whole zoom range. And no flare problems
  • The new EVF is a MAJOR improvement over the one used in the FZ5. I always hated these kind of viewfinders, but I find myself using this one more often than the display (which is good too, even in bright sunlight)
  • Colour reproduction is very good, though from time to time you might notice these slightly "off" panasonic type blues, that make skies look a little too cyan. But I think there's an improvement over the FZ5 as well.
  • Noise levels are ok, better than I had expected. ISO 100 and 200 is just fine, at 400 noise is noticeable, ISO 800 images lack some detail but you can still use them (though not for very large prints, I guess)
  • Battery life has been improved too (the FZ18 now uses the same battery as the FZ50). Fully charged it's good for around 400 shots
  • The "intelligent Auto" mode seems to work very well. My wife used it almost exclusively and her pictures are just fine. The camera even managed to handle very difficult, contrasty scenes quite well.
Can't say anything about the quality of the RAW images and the Silkypix software, because we haven't used that so far.

Bottom line: THis is a great little camera and a BIG improvement over the first few FZ models. Would definitely buy it again!

So here are some sample pics from New York. All pics without any post-processing, just resized and slightly sharpened in IrfanView:

Full wide-angle here and no visible distortions at the straight lines

The same scene with full telephoto

Difficult lighting conditions here at Times Square, but I think the camera did very well

Again a very contrasty scene

The former New Jersey railroad station

ISO 800 shot at Ellis Island museum

The Wall of Honor on Ellis Island

No explanation necessary, I guess...

Again - very difficult scene, but nice picture, I think

At Union Square

St. Luke's Place in Greenwich Village - VERY contrasty, but the picture is just fine (you can't avoid blown-out parts here completely)

Manhattan Skyline at dawn

Museum of Natural History, handheld at 1/8 s

This is the only shot that has been processed - a HDR image combined from 3 bracketed shots (from Top of the Rock)

Hope you like it :o)

I agree, there are several areas of improvement, that when taken together, really move this model to a new standard.

That EVF is good.

What great colours. And most of them are razor sharp. You have done an excellent work.
Kind regards,
Joao

Marvin,

The "top of the rock" composition is excellent. Did you get any night
shots of Times Square? Hope your visit here was great.

800 photo's wow! I live here and haven't taken that many pics yet.
Just the zoom samples I uploaded to this forum.

Very impressive, I think the dynamic range and the ISO 800 performance are improved over the FZ8, and the lens is going to give the competition a lot of grief!

Therefore, I don't think many FZ18 owners will need to bother with RAW.

Thanks for a great range of photos.

Thanks for a great range of photos.
PS - I've passed the thread link to my son who lives near New York, I'm sure he will enjoy your photos.

Yes, the new lens is a clear winner - and glad you like the pictures

If you and/or your son are interested in some more pics from our New York trip you can visit http://picasaweb.google.de/Marverel

The explanations under each image are written in German, but I think you don't need them to get an impression about our great week in this city.

Hey Rich - thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, we did not get a night shot from Times Sqare. So much to see, so little time (guess you know what i mean...)

But I got this one for you :o)

Oh - and these 800 pics include some dozen bracketed nightshots from Top of the Rock and at least 100 pictures from Statue of Liberty (my wife just loves the Lady).

Thanks Gene - I told my wife about your comment, because she took most of the pictures you see here (except from the night and evening shots)

Hey Terry.

Well - I think my will will use the new camera most of the time, but I'll definitely borrow it from her in case I don't wanna drag around all my DSLR stuff .

And my wife really has a good "photographic eye", she just does not want to fiddle around with any manual controls or settings. Here's one more of her pics I really like (she named it "The dark side of Miss Liberty"):

Hi,

I like your pictures... Can you post others from New York City?
Have you taken 800 pictures in New York only?

Do you have any others pictures from your city or any others nice places?

Do you have any albums in google, flicker, pbase or any other web site that everyone's can enjoy them and discover your talent?

Regards,
Stephane

Merci, Stephane.

Yes, we shot that 800 pictures during our 1-week-Trip to New York. We don't keep them all, of course, these 800 include many exposure-bracketed nightshots, for example, and some dozen pictures of Lady Liberty (which was the highlight and most favourite photographic subject for my wife).

We have a little New Nork Gallery here:

Picture explanations are written in German, but you will get an idea without being able to read them, I think.

You can find some older pictures here

http://www.pbase.com/marverel/

I haven't updated this gallery for quite some time though

Hey marverel, very nice pics. How did you find the noise to be on the long exposure night shots. I do a lot of this type of shooting and wanted to know how this camera will perform. these were shot with a rebel xti, by the way, and I'm just wondering what kind of results to expect from the fz18...these were 20-30 second exposures

Hi Martin,

Just received my FZ 18 tonight and has been trying to take some outside night shots.

How do you set your FZ18 to take night pictures.

Mine are mostly blurry

Try night scene mode. Use a tripod. That should give you up to 8 seconds.

Not sure how much time you can get in Aperture priority but check the manual. If you can meter on something you consider neutral gray, do that and the exposure lock. Not sure if you can do this in night scene but try.

On TZ3 and presumably on FZ18 there is also starry sky which goes up to 60 seconds.
