Set the C-700 on the tripod to shoot some IR, the quick disconnect was not locked properly

Camera drops 56 inches to the ground, lands on the lens.

Extension tube saved the camera. Broke the filter. Owell...

The lens barrel was crooked, wouldn't retract. Pushed it back in place. Seems to work fine. Phew. Now I know, thank heavens I always keep the extender tube and a UV filter on. My filter gave its life saving my camera. A noble thing to do. From now on I wear the shoulder strap, always. I would advise you guys to do the same. Guess I dodged a bullet there...--rich

Had a similar scare....had the camera in hand when I got out of my car to take a shot...the car was on an incline and the door came back knocking my hand that had the camera...camera went flying but my other had was right there to take the hand-off... Now I wrap strap around hand or neck before I exit the car or the camera goes back into the bag..

There have already been several of us that have done that. As it turns out the lens barrel is not too hard to put back on should it ever come off. My lens barrel did come all the way off. If I had to fix it again, I'd have it back together in no time.

I take more care when leaving my camera on a tripod, but I am not the type that can keep the camera tethered to me, just too inconvenient.

Hey Brian

That being the case, if the lens barrel comes off easily...

I would LOVE to remove the internal IRcut filter in my c-700. If I could remove the internal hot mirror filter I could shoot some serious IR. I could always screw on an external hot-mirror filter for normal shots.

Your thoughts?--richc-700, d-510 http://www.pbase.com/iceninevt

Not easily done. When the tube come off there is only one other lens that is easily removed and that is the focusing lens. All other lenses seem to be fixed to the camera. There may be some adventurouse types out there, but even being a mechanical engineer, I'm not that adventurous.

Brian, I want that IRcut filter removed so bad I can taste it. I actually had a dream that I attempted to open the camera and remove the filter, in the dream I broke the camera. Im my dream I had another one. I busted that one too. That dream was so real. When I woke up the first thing I did was check my c-700 and see it was OK. And they say people are fanatical about their uzi's...

THanks anyway--richc-700, d-510 http://www.pbase.com/iceninevt

hmm If you want that badly to remove the IR filter, maybe you can get a little c2000 or c2020? they are cheap now on ebay.com and you can buy a refurbish to do just IR..probably you can get one for about 250$ or so...surely beats ruining the c700 :)

The c2000 and c2020 are really good IR camera.

Glad for you. I have dropped my Sony P1 fron 12-19 inches hight and Sony service asked for $480. The Sony P1 replaced with C700 for $375 on this Friday. It has three times more zoom and $105 less.

Hello,

This hapened to couple of people already. I am always amazed how it can be put back together that easily. It is a very sturdy little camera, no doubt!

I always use the strap around my neck or around my wrist when even i handle the camera.

At some point it was debated if it was better to leave the adapter on or not...some people did not had the adapter and thought that if they would have had it, the camera body would have broken instead of the lens going off.

Your experience proved that either way it is sturdy.

There is an insurance protection for this kind of accidents. It is your homeowner or rental policy. If it set to a $100 then you pay the first $100 the rest will be covered by your insurance. The camera must be damage. This policy would not cover malfunctioned camera but damaged (dropped for example or stolen). I have dropped my Sony P1 and Sony repair estimated the repair as $480. My insurance policy set for $500. I may change it for $250 or even $100 deductable.
