I decided to buy a G9 myself, based on the the reviews and the comments on this forum - should arrive tomorrow :)

I am about to order some accessories (batteries and SD cards) and I am wondering whether the G9 manual mentiones the supported SDHC classes for the SD cards so I can order accordingly.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Matt

--good question and how many Gs can the G9 accept whether that type or SD. No information in the Canon manual nor on their site.

I don't know if this will help Matt, but I'm using a Transcend 8GB Class 2 SDHC in my G9 and it works fine. The problem is not the card/camera but rather the card/reader. I probably have a dozen different card readers including some newer ones, and none of them will recognize the SDHC card. I have to connect the camera to the computer with a USB cable. Also, this has been mentioned with other cameras as well, some SDHC cards (like mine) are a a tiny bit thicker than a standard SD card and tends to get stuck in the camera's card slot, which is not really a big deal if you have to use a USB cable anyway ;-)

Thanks for all the replies... I am NOT concerned that a SDHC class 6 card will NOT work with the camera, I just do not want to spend the money on a class 6 card if the G9 only supports class 2.

I am using a Class 6 SDHC card. I paid about $75 for an 8GB card.

If you plan on using Raw you will probably want an 8GB card. I can get about 330 images on a 8GB card.

Get a built in reader that replaces the floppy drive. I got one for $15 or so from NewEgg and it reads everything. Also, I don't have to have another USB cable hanging off my computer and laying across my desktop.

I'm on my second one of those now! :-( I prefer the ones that are in the CPU case, but it's easer to replace the USB ones every time a new blasted card comes out. The last time it was xD type H which none of my card readers would recognize. Also, my laptop's card reader won't work with SDHC.

Class is a speed spec, Matt. See this site:

http://www.sdcard.com/usa/TextPage.asp?Page=3

I suspect any SDHC Class will work in the G9. But it may be that a slower card will result in loss of performance (e.g., more time required to write a RAW image to the card or more time to transfer images via a card reader).

My understanding is that the Sandisk Extreme III SDHC cards are Class 6, the fastest spec. Not sure about Ultra II (which are pretty fast, too, but slower than the Extreme III).

get the fastest (class 6).

Purchased an Extreme III 4 gig card aweek ago for my new G9. It dosn't say class anywhere that I can tell only 20MB/s and 130x which I thought was slow as other cards boast a 150x( Transcend). Happy with the card though and it came with a reader from amazon.

Yes, I am aware of this. That is why I would like to find out what the G9 supports. I do not want to spent the money on a class 6 card when the G9 only supports class 2. I rather buy more cards :)

They sure will work, but at lower fall back speeds

So you just answered your own question. A fast card will always work in a slow camera. The card is a storage device; the camera drives the speed, if the card can keep up. With a new camera like the G9, and RAW, faster is better ito card capability.

But since I will be getting a 4 GB SDHC Sandisk Extreme III (Class 6) card tomorrow -- which I know will work (not for nothing I'm an EE) -- I will report my success and set your mind at ease ;-)

There is a link to the full line. It supports SDHC the Sandisk seems to be a good canidate unless there is a faster. The extreme also stands for severe weather conditions. Class 6 sounds cool but unless they specify a speed well I wouldn't touch it.

I'm getting the G9 also it uses the same batteries as my rebel Xti so I'll have 3 chargers and 3 batteries. I'll break down and get the 430 ex as well. The 580 is huge.

I guess I was not successful in communicating what I am looking for. I am aware that all SDHC cards will work with the G9. However, I do not see the point in spending the money for a class 6 card if the G9 writes only at a class 2 speed.

Conclusion: I did not answer my own question which was which SDHC classes the G9 is supporting.

English is not my mother tongue so I guess I was not clear enough in my original question... and... I am an engineer too, so you don't have to set my mind at ease in this respect :)

Thanks

Matt

Correct: I did not understand the question. My guess is that you will be happier with a faster card, particularly if writing RAW to it. And a faster card should result in faster transfers from the card (or camera) to your computer (assuming USB ports are not the limiting factor) -- especially noticeable if you are transferring 4 GB of images.

One reason for a fast card is to support a multi-shot burst mode. Such modes can be very fast on a DSLR but my impression is that the G9 does not have a particularly fast burst mode.

I suspect the dpreview (perhaps other) review will test such things as transfer rate and provide information of the sort you want.

If that camera did not support the Extreme 3 speed I'd be really surprized.

I put the extreme III (SD) in my S2 IS it made the camera dance compaired to a regular.
I wouldn not get anything less try and find the Extreme 4 its even faster.
The camera will use it.

I found a review with some speed data in it. Not sure what to make of it in terms of the question you asked, but here it is:

"Speed/Timing – All speed tests are conducted using a Kingston Ultimate 120X 2GB SD Card, with the camera set to the highest resolution and best quality JPEG.

Startup to First Shot (7.6)

The G9 takes 2.4 seconds to start up and fire its first shot. It is slowed by its rather long autofocusing time.

Shot-Shot (9.3)

The G9 can be set to two different Burst modes, Continuous and Continuous AF. In Continuous mode, the camera takes full resolution photos every 0.7 seconds until the card is full. This is nice, and should help capture some action shots. In Continuous AF mode, the camera takes photos every 1.3 seconds, autofocusing between each.

Shutter-to-Shot (9.0)

The G9 has a lag time of less than 0.1 seconds when the shutter is held halfway down and prefocused, and a lag of 0.8 seconds when not prefocused.

Processing (6.8)
It takes 1.6 seconds for one 5.4MB photo taken at ISO 125 to be processed."

I've got the Sandisk Extreme III 4GB card (class 6) and the included reader. I have not tried downloading images from the cam directly to the computer. I have only used the special SDHC reader on a USB 2.0 connection.

Even with only a jpeg I get a brief "Busy" screen while the image is written to the card. I find that rather disappointing. Download to the computer seems very fast but I have not times it yet.

After your initial post I did check the paper manual for speed ratings or class ratings; no mention at all.

I have not done a low level formatting yet. I used the card as it came. Tomorrow I will do the low level formatting and let you know if I still get the busy screen.

In my opinion, the question whether the G9 can write to a card at a speed a Class 6 card can take, is a very valid question.

I have an old 128MB SD card also from Sandisk. I shall try to take the same photo on both cards and see if one give me a busy screen while the other doesn't.

This matter is not resolved yet. Let's keep pushing.
