IR with the GX100

which filter did you use for this pic & how have you found it's use for other pics? I'm looking around at the moment for a reasonably priced filter to experiment with some IR.

Hi,

I have just managed to get hold of a 43mm IR filter for my GX100 and
thought I would give it a try this morning. Looks like it could be a
lot of fun...
Mark,

Thanks for the great pics! I got my GX100 a couple of weeks ago and am building up some filters and adapter lenses. I really want to get an IR filter, but I'm not sure which one. I saw this great page on the various wavelength IR filters: http://www.lifepixel.com/digital-infrared/samples.html .

Do you know what wavelength your filter is? I see they go from 720nm to 950nm. I'd appreciate any advice on which are best in which circumstances.

Hi,

The filter I found is a 720nm, it's 43mm so doesn't need any adaptors ( I have read a few post where people have said there is no 43mm IR available) apart from the ext tube thingo that you use for a CP filter or the 19mm lens. I got mine from ebay, the quality is fine but it's a no name brand - works OK though. I'm going to try and take some more during the next week.

Cheers

Mark

You gave me an idea! I tried this afternoon with an IR pass filter i have for my

telescope, and it is amazing: you can shoot handhold, put the focus to 3 m or so, and the results are extremely strange looking. I will process the images this evening and i will try to upload something, but i do not know yet how exactly to work with IR color images...

Seems my GX100 can do even more than i thought before.

Thanks Mark. I just ordered a 950nm and reading a bunch of sites. Here's a good one: http://www.lifepixel.com/digital-infrared/samples.html . I'll post some pics in a week or so.

Hi, Glad you found one. It's all good fun and it's great when you end
up with something you can be really pleased with...
Well, I got it yesterday, and so far not to successful. I got a 950nm. I've tried various program, manual, and exposure compensation. The only was I've gotten anything visible is outdoors under sunlight, F2.5, and 8second exposure!!! Am I missing something? Should I have gotten a 720nm to let in a bit more visible light?

Help!?!?

David

Sorry, I'm not an expert, so I hope this is relevant!

My understanding is that visible light ends around 700-720nm, so even with an R72 filter (nominal cutoff at 720nm) there is hardly any visible light.

Past 900nm not only is there no visible light, but probably you're outside the limits of what the chip is sensitive to as well. So your lack of success would be as expected.

I found the Hoya R72 to be pretty good, and not too expensive, FWIW

I exchanged the 950nm for a 720nm. Much, much better now! One great tip I read on another website is to zoom in on green grass and do a custom white balance. I found it really does help, assuming you have lots of foliage in the picture.

I'll try and take some shots tomorrow. After that, it's off to NYC for a week. The GX-100 will get lots of work on my vacation, but I don't think I'll be using the IR filter there.
