CP 5000 owners: Are you happy with your purchase?

I would not buy this camera again. I am one of those people who
believe that there should not be a learning curve for a camera when
it is set to auto. A top of the line digital camera should give you
flawless exposure, white balance, etc when set to auto. My original
mavica made better exposures and had better white balance than my
5000! Pretty sad.
Well, if you want flawless exposure and flawless white balance and flawless whatever else in AUTO, you will have a hard time finding a camera that will fit your need in any price range. Read the reviews. The miracle hasn't happened yet, and the photographer is still required to engage that blob of grey stuff inside the head assembly. There is a reason that AUTO isn't the only available mode -- which isn't to say that in some situations it doesn't work just fine.

Since you already have the camera, take it OFF of auto. And give yourself a chance. The learning curve, such as it is, isn't all that terribly steep if you'll take the time to peruse the forum and benefit from what others have learned. You won't find many people around here who even remember that the camera HAS an auto mode.

And if you don't still own it, well .. you're missing a great camera.

Grant Y. Buy the a/c adaptor and practice, practice, practice. You will be surprized how much you learn about the camera...

Hello all,

To explore digital quality i first had an olympus 960 compact, followed by a c2100. I soon caried them with me in my spare time and it was fun.

My ex-camera (olympus 2100) however got defective within warranty period and i must pick another one. I am not bashing at any camera and am not a materiallistic person. A camera is a creative tool to me, nothing else.

Dealer issues force me to pick nikon or olympus and thus i was looking at nikon coolpix 5000 or olympus e-10 (e-20 terribly slow:(( ). I worked extensively with both camera's for a few weeks, but:

the coolpix:

no lens tread => no filters without adapter
No ttl-flash possibility :(
no use of external flash features (zoom, AF-assist).

AF speed poorer compared to previous camera (had working infrared af-assist, still slow overall af though)
Dynamic range on coolpix...
lens quality seems soso...
horrible viewfinder...

Just to many limitations to allow creative use. I am still not looking into a D-slr. I want the sensor-size to stabilise and they are still overpriced, let's face it.

The other option would be an e-10,:

had one to evaluate but:

AF/MF issues (defect, aknowledged by supplier), heard it is very hard matching AF/MF to viewfinder because of viewfinder operation (prism mirror).

Iso values 80,160,320 because of 20% light to prism viewfinder => incompatible with standard iso values on any flash except expensive fl-40.
lens limitation (hate converters => too much quality loss).
slow
uncopressed RAW , tiny RAW review :(, horribly slow with raw
poor raw conversion nikon, canon
batter grip necessary (balance, handling)

size/weight vs. overall quality [i am willing to carry a (pro - slr) but that weight is accounted for in features/build quality]

How is it wecope with these horrible limitations on a digital camera. It is fun to use, otherwise...

I was terribly close to a D1H, but sleeping over it it just is not worth the money. Since i can't get a refund on my purchase price (2100 back when it was still "expensive"), i have to pick a nikon or olympus digital. Any other views on my options? I want a creative tool, overpowering any limitaions put on my creativity.

reasons i picked the 2100 were:

looking at the state of digital camera's
100% EVF - LCD
AF-assist
external-flash connection, TTL-possibility
good lens
lens tread (filters)
size-handling
ease-of-use
fairly good optional glass (olympus)

A year further and looking, but...
set back by all these issues, are there workarounds you experienced?

thanks for any input :)

E-10's with latest firmware have no AF / MF problems - I have one. Your supplier is referring to OOF issues some time ago. Not a cause for concern anymore.
Iso values 80,160,320 because of 20% light to prism viewfinder =>
incompatible with standard iso values on any flash except expensive
fl-40.
Buy a Metz 54 and use with adapter on any camera - cheaper and more powerful. Works superbly.

Suggest you post in Oly forum for other views on E-10 - you are missing out on a great camera. I also have E100RS - great but entirely different.

Maybe I misunderstood you. What made me laugh was when you said " A year further and looking, but... """" English is not my native language so I might have misunderstood.. For me it means that you've been looking to buy a camera and making comparisons for 1 all year!!!!!

Also this thread is quite old and CP5K users have been defending this camera ever since he came out. Read the threads, make searches, etc. this subject wether is the right camera has been discusted to nauseum...

Again I apologize it was not my intention to hurt your feelings.

This question is not for people who don't own a Coolpix 5000, not
for people who have never used a Coolpix 5000, and not for people
who like to stand on the sidelines and criticize everything there
is about the Coolpix 5000.
Steven,

I'm a 60 year old woman who has taken an interest in photography. I started with a Kodak DC4800, which I still have and now have a Nikon CP5000. I dont really know from shinola..The 5000 to me is very forgiving and has given me supurb quality pictures even tho I have not much of a clue.. Learn learn learn, read read read and take pics pics pics..I really have nothing bad to say about either camera. Hope that helps...Gale

Thanks, Gale,

But if you'll notice, my original post was made Dec. 25, 2001! I don't know why this post was resurrected, but I purchased my Coolpix 5000 in January. It has its limitations, but I've gotten some nice shots with it. Until I can afford a DSLR, I'll stick with my Coolpix 5000.

I check this page regularly and I have noticed that the score is gradually improving.

This question is for people who have owned a Coolpix for at least
several days now, and have used it, and have seen in person what it
can do.

Are you generally pleased with the camera (taking into account that
no camera is perfect)? Would you recommend that people buy this
camera instead of its closest competitors?

Your answers will help me decide whether to trade up from my
Coolpix 990 or not. Thanks.

John:

Time is against this camera and it will be yesterdays news son., this was suppose to be the flag ship of the coolpix, and it end up being just another half design point and shot camera. Nikon could have made a Killing if they solve the issues that were posted in this forum.

I already got my moneys worth out of these camera, can wait to sell it when the D100 be available. (I already place the order for it)

I really expected more out of this camera, but I was a full thinking that a Point shot camera will have some of the features of the big boys (SLR or DSLR) also the TTL capacity of this camera remains me of owners of cars that buy a sticker to put on their cars that state that they are turbo. I don’t care how many times they say it is TTL !this is not a TTL machine!

Compared to the 950 which I also have, the 5000 seems to be more difficult to focus, even with the 5 area focus zone. I can get consistently better focused pics with the 950 more often. I also find that I can handhold the 950 down to 1/8 sec with no shake while the 5000 is soft at slower shutter speeds. You just cannot cradle the camera against the body as easily. the 950 is very good at candid shots with the larger LCD and flip body.

That said, the 5000 can take superb pics when conditions are right, I do wish there are more dedicated buttons for the menu functions instead of constantly leafing thru the insane menu. Please NIkon give me a proper PASM dial like all other cameras.
It is a very compact camera and truly pocketable.
Love the 19mm wide angle, it is awsome.
Still waiting for the Battery grip.
