Layer Mask Challenge

That is fantastic! I love the colors, the treatment of the image, the texture...everything works together perfectly, Mike. Send it off to the poster printer! Excellent work.

I am having a hard time with this. I want to make the frame be a "clear" part of the picture with texture, emboss or something like that but cannot get it to work out like you did in your example.

What layer is the channel mask that you show for?

Thank you

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do.

You can dup the image layer, add the mask, then add texture to the image (not the mask). The Frame will look the same as the image, except textured.

Looks like I didn't use the mask as shown in the channel palette, other than to copy into another layer, then inverse.

Give it a try, if you get stuck ask how to get from point A to B. Someone will jump in to get you going.
I'm stuck.

I downloaded the zip file and opened the 3-frame file in CS2 at 1000x1000 @100dpi in grayscale as per directions in your other post.
Getting started:
Open an image you want to work with.
I opened "dog".
Copy/Paste the image into the first file.
Assuming "first file" refers to the frame, I copied "dog" onto a new layer in the "frame" file.
You will have the Black & White Design on the Background Layer with your image on top.
I have this:

Duplicate your image layer.
I duplicated "dog".

Click on the mask icon.
With "dog copy" as active layer, I clicked on "add layer mask".
Click on the Design layer.
I clicked on "frame" layer.
Select All / Copy.
Did that.
Now go to the Channel Mask in Channels, then paste the design into the mask box.
That's where I get lost. I don't know where to paste the frame.

With "dog copy" as active layer I click on "dog copy Mask" in the Channels palette and paste.

I end up with this:

which doesn't seem to match your description:
Now the design is your mask on the image on the top layer.
Where am I going awry? Thanks,
C

I could explain where you went wrong, but it doesn't matter. That way is more complex than it needed to be, but I suggested doing it that way so you would understand where the channel masks reside and how to view and alter them.

Here is a simpler way.

Open frame template Grayscale> Auto Levels> RGB
Copy / Paste your pic on top.
Duplicate image layer.
Select frame layer.
Use magic wand set to non-contiguous.
Click on Black. All Black should be selected.
Select top image layer.
Click mask Icon at the bottom of the layer palette.
The active selection from the frame should now be the mask on your image layer.
Change blend mode on the top image layer (with the mask) to Multiply.

The image where the borders fall should be darker, with the rest of the image normal.

Here is my first attempt.

I know it is simple and not that good but I wanted to at least see if I could to it. I was having trouble getting the mask to be clear and just show the emboss.

My dog, Guinness, was the model. This is one of my favorite photographs of him and I hope to do other creative things with it.
