OT but relevant to digital ?

I need to get a decent scanner that will do slides. I only have
about 500. The Epson 1650 photo scanner is $249.00 with a $50.00
rebate. As far as I can read, it is the best quality in the price
range. From what I read the next step is much higher. Any
experienced scanners out there?
Thanks, John

Check the Epson 2450 photo about $100.00 more but better resolution, it also comes with a scaled down version of silverfast which is excellent scanner software. Check this link for a review.

Thanks to all for the responses.Looks like my bro in law will be buying a good slide scanner for me to borrow..

I heard a while back that there is a slide adapter available that fits on a NIKON 950 digicam . Anyone familiar with it?
I'll think I'll post this in the NIKON forum.

Again, Thanks to everyone who replied and helped me learn more about this slide scanning thing. John

John,

I purchased the Epson 2450 after a considerable amount of research. I chose the 2450, because I have my old Canon F-1 slides, negatives, photos and old negs/photos from my parents.

The 2450 handles two strips of 35mm negs (12 frames) at one time or 4 35 mm slides...it also does 4x5s.

The quality is excellent and it comes with both USB 2.0 and Firewire connections. I paid $399 for it before Christmas.

Here is an example of a negative I scanned...then used unsharp mask in Photoshop Elements.

Your sample is very impressive. Does the 2450 have a transparency
adapter or is everything self-contained?

Darrell

On mine it is built into the lid of the scanner...there is an insert that you use when you scan photos or paper...you remove that when you scan negs and slides. A light built into the lid of the scanner illuminates the neg or slide. You use a special holder for 35mm negs and one for the slides to hold the pieces in place to allow the software to discern where the slide and negs are located.

I had an opportunity to revisit the Acer 1240UT (1200 dpi)scanning slides today. The guy had it down good today. The 8X10 prints (off the printer created from the scans were very good. Color was dead on accurate and detail was definitely good .(note: not excellent)but very good. His slides were not the best either from what I could see.

He was doing 6 at a time. I was impressed because prior to my revisit, I was about to dismiss flatbed scanning in the $200.00 range. He paid $135.00 (discounted) for the Acer. (BTW decent reviews)

I have ordered the supposedly/hopefully better quality Epson 1650 photo model. It does 1600 dpi and I am hoping that it will do even better than the Acer.

I bought from Dell. The List was $249.00 . They had a 10% off with free shipping plus a $50.00 rebate. For $175.00 delivered, It was a very good deal so I went for it. The included PS Elements software was also a persuasive extra. Wish me luck. I'll report next week . They already told me it would ship before the weekend. John

Uhhh, Who was it that said flatbed scanners won't be good enough?
Nice quality. Thanks for showing the sample. John

I think you will be happy with it... the 2450 does 2400x4800dpi, but you would never really scan at that level...the file would be to huge to download..

From what I read you need a min of 1200dpi x 2400dpi optics to do good 35slides scanning...and I heard you get better results with scanning a slide than a negative...--RichO :) http://www.pbase.com/richo/http://www.richo.org/LearningCenter/faq_olympus.htm 'Life is a dance, Love is the music.'

HI Duane,

I did look at that particular model. Pacific's Silver 1800 dpi is impressive but some reviews seemed a bit negative. It also appeared that the Pacific silver 1800 does only slides and negs.

I really needed a new flatbed scanner and the positive pro/user reviews, and PS Elements program included , swayed me to the Epson 1650 photo model.

However your posted information will probably help others who are looking for this type of dedicated scanner.
Thanks for your reply and help. John

John, keep us posted with the results of your scanning. Like I mentioned before, I have a HP 5370 which does slides/negatives, and I'm not really happy with it. So, I'll probably upgrade to something better somewhere down the road.

I purchased the Epson 1650 photo too for 161.00 after rebate. (Was on sale at Buy.com a while ago with free shipping.) The number of negatives I will scan is few compared to some folks. This machine will satisfy my modest needs in that regard.

If I were seriously interested in scanning a LOT of negatives in one fell swoop, I would buy or borrow a dedicated slide/negative scannner, scan them all in, and then resell the scanner.

Scanning all our old family photos is just the ticket for the 1650. I have absolutely no complaints in that regard. Nice software as someone has already mentioned - but I did not need is PS Elements. Already have PS.
