Took the 40D for a spin today and took some portraits of Sasha. Most of the shots were taken with 580EXII and LSPJII.

Shot mostly in RAW and a few jpegs @ Portrait Picture Style setting (3,0,-1,1). It might be a bit premature but it seems to me that AF is slightly faster and more accurate than my ex-30D. Also, I absolutely love the IQ of the 40D and will likely be my first choice for portraiture.

Here is the gallery:

I will likely process more and add to this gallery.

My faves:

Cheers,

José

Beautiful shots as always ...

A few question about quality overall compared to your 1d2n if you still have it as i remeber ... How do you like the colors, skin tones and highlight details over all compared to your 1d2n .

Thanks for sharing a beautiful shots .

Hi Evan,

Thanks for the kind words.

I still have the 1DIIN. It might be a bit early but the 40D has the potential to be my no. 1 camera for portraiture----I really love the details and resolution I am seeing from it. I haven't done any direct comparison because I don't like to bring two cameras to a photoshoot as it makes my bag too heavy.

For the next few shoots I will shoot primarily with the 40D and make the assessment then. In this photoshoot the model wore little makeup and her eyeshadow has a pink/magenta hue to it. I've shot some in jpegs and I notice that my Portrait (Picture Style) setting of 3,0,-1,2 is a bit too warm than my 1DIIN or ex-30D. However, I prefer not to come into conclusions until I shoot more with the 40D.

Best regards,

José

Great shots as usual. What are your impressions of the 40D IQ? Is there a much difference between it and the 30D. I know yhe AF is supposed to be improved but I am more interested in IQ if I am going to upgrade.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the kind words.

Sasha's shoot was my first portrait session with the 40D. So far I am ecstatic about the results I am getting. I am seeing more details from the new camera than my ex-30D. Also, I am very, very impressed with the dynamic range compared to the 30D. As to high ISO images, from my limited tests I don't see any difference between the 40D and the 30D.

Bear in mind that I am just giving my observations and my experience as I don't have the 30D to make side-by-side comparisons. I still own the 1DIIN but I don't feel like bringing this along with the 40D just to make comparisons as it will make my bag too heavy. I am looking forward to doing more photoshoots with the 40D.

Best regards,

José

Thanks Jose I am leaning and more to upgrading to the 40D. There are a lot of good reports and you have confirmed them in my mind. Keep us up to date with the comparisons from the 1D and the 40D

Cheers
