Some SD14 questions

Having played with my new camera for a few days, some questions:

Does anyone else have a 'loose' spot on the case, pretty much exactly where your thumb rests when holding the camera? My case is loose there, and makes this clicking sound every time I pick up the camera and put my thumb there. It's of course the most annoying spot for there to be a loose body part on the camera. Not the end of the world, but wondering if anyone else notices it on theirs? If you push in with your thumb, does the case 'detent' at all?

How often are people finding they need to reset their camera? Mine has been acting buggy since I got it, and have had to reset it now several times. Some examples of what might happen:

I'm trying to set the autobracket, moves the dial to that mode, and the top screen, showing the amount of AB, start going all jittery, numbers flashing, and then disappear. Moving the knob off AB back to AB, and the same things happens. I can't actually select an AB amount now, once the numbers are gone.

Often I'm focusing and the focus will lock and beep indicating focus, but the camera has in fact selected 00 as the shutter speed. When I engage the shutter, then mirror basically goes into 'bulb'. The lens closes down, the shutter opens until I let go. No picture is actually taken in this bug. When I let go, there is a pause, the shutter closes, another pause, and the lens will open the aperture again. I cannot figure out any rhyme or reason for this. I'm using Program mode, and sometimes it works fine. This is happening about 10% of the time I'd say.

The screen on the back of my camera, the LCD, also has a very noticable 'refresh' jitter in most modes (except the menu). But looking at images, or the preview, the screen definitely jumps a bit, like slow interlacing on a monitor). Wondering also is this is just the screen, or if maybe something on the 'brains' of my camera is really screwed up. It doesn't bother me, just wondering if no-one elses is doing it, maybe it's indicative of something more wrong with my SD14.

Seems like I shouldn't be having to constantly 'reset' the camera like this to keep it running though... Resetting it does fix the AB bug at least, for a while. We'll see this time how long until the camera starts acting weird again.

I do have firmware 1.04 installed.

Hi. No I have no problems but I do use totally in Manual mode. No AF, No AE, No Nowt :-)

Sounds as though one has slipped through the net and needs to be replaced.

Same here, the SD10 was definitely better built.

Have not had to reset it a single time. Everything works well.

Never experienced that.

Never had that problem.

My screen is fine. I had something similar on my SD10. Not that bothering since sharpness and colour were good.

You're right, you shouldn't have to do all these resets. Better send it to Sigma.

Yes ... in the beginning my Sd14 did the samething ..clicking and screaching..

But now...after a couple of months , thia has gone away completely.. like the parts have finally found their place :)

Yes I too was playing with the AB -function once and the same thing happened.. never tried it since :)

My camera did a lot of strange things in the beginning... now I have bought two new batteries... now it works like a dream ;) could be totally unrelated , but it does feel like its a brand new ( and much better) camera now ...
I do have firmware 1.04 installed.

Hello

No loose spot on mine.
Is the other errors reproducable? Do they happen with fully charged battery?
I have a feeling that most of your problems is battery related.
On some cameras/battery combinations there are inital strange behaviour.
How many cycles have your batteries been through?

Hmm, the battery theory is interesting. I have the battery grip installed, and have the stock battery and a second battery, which is 1350mAh, while the stock is 1500mAh.

Seems very strange that the batteries could cause such weirdness, one would think the camera would work or it wouldn't work...

But maybe I'll try the stock battery in the camera without the battery grip.

Tim

Thanks, for now I'm running just one battery in the camera, instead of having both in the grip. Will be curious if it seems to make any difference.

I'll report if it does.

That could be the problem...The SD14 is a power hungry camera and its not a good idea to use batteries with less capacity than the standard 1500mAh Sigma BP-21 battery in it.

Dont bother with NP-400 compatable/replacement batteries as they normally dont exceed 1500mAh and instead look on ebay for Pentax D-L150 compatable/replacement batteries which nearly all have higher capacities that the BP-21...Right up to 2000mAh in fact.

While most is not all are made in China go for the ones that say they use Japanese cells inside...That way you know they will be reliable.
Most are only about £3 each+postage.

True but you wont know for sure unless you use some decent batteries in it.
