There are many people that believe that the Nikon D300 is over priced and many that believe it should not even be compared to the Canon 40D because of its feature set and price difference. So if one was to look at a feature by feature comparison the real price difference, one might say that the D300 is price very well, once you upgrade the 40D to make for a more fair apples to apples comparison.

Canon 40D.......................................... $1299
Canon ST-E2..........................................$210
(to add wireless flash controler)
Canon TC-80N3 Remote...........................$133
(to add Time lapse/interval shooting)
Canon viewfinder Grid Screen.....................$39
------------------------------------------------------------------
Total...................................................$1681
versus
Nikon D300 w/above features included.....$1799

Real Difference.......................................$118

Now this for an additional $118 you get a few more features you simply can't upgrade a 40D to have such as a 51point AF module, a 920,000 pixel LCD display and Spot Metering for all AF points.

And probably someone has to reduce prices a bit, then 40D can be bought at the price of D80, not bad.

Hi NickJr,

I suggest you be happy with your D200 and other Nikon stuffs. Nikon and Canon are good camera manufacturers. The real competition is in the pictures you take. No pne will praise or blame your equipment when you take a nice or bad pictures.

Sorry to say this, but I notice, you make 125 posts in 3 weeks, and only 12 was at Nikon forum, the rest are in Canon EOS forum.

Do you have personal problem with Canon ?

the Nikon D300 is over priced
All the serious studio shooters I know use PocketWizards to trigger strobes, not the ST-E2 or the Nikon equivalent. As for wired remotes, a cheap e-Bay unit is sufficient for most folks in this mid-range market (I own the TC-80N3, and it is overkill for this market). Frankly, this math seems to be grasping at straws to justify the real market price differential, especially as the 40D will likely be selling below List Price by the time the D300 finally becomes widely available.

Actually I decided to ditch Canon when they announced the D300 specs! $1799 is too cheap for a technological marvel such as this! Sold!!!

why would you get the st-e2 if you aren't going to get a flash? Also it would be better to get a flash than a controller without flash.
Canon TC-80N3 Remote...........................$133
(to add Time lapse/interval shooting)
nice option, but not everyone will want all of the features that the tc-80n3 offers such as interval shooting and time lapse. Most will probably opt for the rs-80n3 which costs a lot less than the tc-80n3. Or you could just go for a pocket wizard and get all the features. :)
Canon viewfinder Grid Screen.....................$39
not everyone will want a grid screen. I might consider it but not everyone needs it.

here in australia the diference between the body prices of the 40D and the D300 is between $1000-$1100. that is a pretty massive difference. You could get two 580ex II's for the price difference (in AUD).

that monetary value just doesnt seem right. I know that you are talking in US dollars btw :P

except I bought the grid screen and less than the price you came up with!

Unfortunately, Nikon does not offer the lenses I need: 10-22 (12 mm not wide enough and I will never consider the Sigma lens), 17-55 f/2.8 IS or VR (no VR for Nikon), 70-200 f/4L IS (don't want f/5.3 at 200 mm of 70-300 VR).

But the 105 f/2.8 VR Macro is sweet with no Canon equivalent.

If Nikon offers the lenses I want, I will immediately sell all my Canon stuff. Especially since Nikon has now caught up with decent high ISO performance in their D300 and D3.

I am sick and tired of Canon's continual policy of handicapping their cameras. :(

I think I will wait for the D40X replacement and get it together with the 105 f/2.8 VR Macro and SB600 flash.

If you don't need those things at all, could you have them removed and refunded from the $1800 Nikon D300?

But the D300 would need an expensive battery grip to catchup with the EOS 40D 6.5 fps burst mode, doesn't it? So tack on another $200-$300 for that to the cost of the D300. The EOS 40D includes the most comprehensive software editing package of any camera. Doesn't Nikon only hand out "trial" version of its full NX software? That's another added expense to the D300 isn't it?

What about a live histogram? Or 14-bit mode when shooting 6.5 fps? Will the D300 have add-on peripherals for that too?

why should I buy some ST-E2 if I never ever use remote flash
and im fact rather seldom use flash at all? huh?

as for remote control - being landscape guy, pretty much "glued"
to tripod I'm very fine with 3 sec. MLU delay. been shooting with
remote cable once but switched to MLU and it hasn't been a big
problem for me. why making big deal out of it?

above that: 40D is already in retail. D300 could be there before Xmas
but it's still far from that. if you enjoy comparison between existing
and non-existing gear... :)

to summarize: some pretty dumb comparison with dumb assumptions
that everybody needs this or that. do your homework first, OK? what about:
40D + 17-55/2.8 IS = some 2000$
D300 + 17-55/2.8 = some 3000$
and while image quality could be argued, the later has no IS, which
together with excellent high ISO performance gives Canon a real
advantage in available light shooting. wanna comment?

Have they? I haven't seen reviews or 100% images from either of those cameras. The D300 Phil tested was a pre-production model and he didn't post or make conclusions about full size images.

Where did you see that Nikon high ISO and IQ is surpassing Canon standards now?

I'm seriously considering the D300 over the 40d, I just need to wait and see real-world reviews of the Nikon and how well it actually performs, jumping from Canon to Nikon would be a big move for me. Right now there are no reviews of production D300s that I've seen.

Thats incorrect, the Vertical grip increases it to 8fps its already at 6.5fps

Nikon has new Nikon ViewNX which will edit and convert NEF RAW files, so dispite what some may say it does com with useable software.

Perhaps Nick wants to bring the world of God to us Canon heathens!

It does seems strange that people claiming to have nikon equipment and loving nikon, seem to be spending all there time in Canon forum, yelling how good nikon is, when I get the 40D, know what Im going to do?

Instead of going to a Nikon forum and saying how good my NEW camera is, I;ll be out taking pictures and then home printing them!

I read a post this evening from somone claiming to have Canon equipment, saying if the D300 IQ turns out to be equal to the IQ of the 40D, he's going to sell all his Canon equipment and buy a D300?

So if I undersatnd, what he is saying is that he is willing to sell all his Canon gear, loss money, spend a forturn on new Nikon lens, pay $500.00 more for the nikon bodyall to have equal image quality??

Splain that one to be Lucy!

The propose for that remote is to add a portable time lapse that the Nikon has built-in. Its not amatter of grapsing at straws its more to educate people as to what you get for the price difference. There are many people that do not know of all the added extra's Nikon includes that Canon makes you pay etra and dearly for. Just here in a few post someone was unaware that time lapse is included and built-in via onboard software. for This you have to haul a laptop or purchase said remote at a cost of $133.

I am just going by the raving reviews of the D3 sensor (such as those from reputed sports photographer Ed Betz).

If the D300 sensor follows the usual trend, then it'll be about at least 1 stop worse at ISO 800 and above. Nikon just employs lots of noise reduction schemes that kill details at the same time.

But we'll have to wait and see. Even Phil's reviews don't show this. I was quite appalled when I saw the Nikon D200 vs Canon 400D equivalent RAW shots in ACR.

The Sony A700 ISO 1600 shots are rather disappointing. But that's Sony.

I'm tired of this...

The Canon 40D is a perfectly capable camera with a good set of features at a decent price point (though I would have happily paid less for it). I'm sure that the Nikon D300 will be just as capable.

The difference between my Canon Rebel (300D) and the 40D is monumental. Arguing that the difference between the 40D and Nikon D300 is more than just marginal is making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I'm happy with my 40D. It has all of the features that I need. : - )

It seems like the D300 has all of the features that you need. I hope that you enjoy it. : - )

Now that I have that out of my system, I'm going to get back to learning how to use my new toy!!!
