Sorry Nikon, it's Canon for me

After waiting what seems like forever to be able to afford a D-SLR, I have come to a point that I need one soon as part of my job. I have no usable autofocus lenses of any particular manufacturer (old F3 + lenses) so it would be either the D60 or F100 for me. I would have preferred the D100 as I own a Coolpix 990 and got used to Nikon. However their delay in releasing details of availability and price of the D100 has definately worked to their disadvantage in my instance as I have ordered the Canon D60 and expect delivery in the next 3-4 weeks. For me it's not really worth waiting as the Nikon can not be hugely superior to the Canon (perhaps they're still trying to tweak their software to got on par with the Canon!, that's why no samples!). Anyway ..so long Nikon.

Yeah, well I hope your job doesn't require USABLE autofocus, because if it does you're about to buy the biggest AF TURKEY in the DSLR world. No..make that the prosumer digital world.

Enjoy your digital Rebel!!

Canon should have called it the Hunter.

Alright well dont let the door hit you on the way out!! Just kidding. I have thought about switching to Canon also but I already have a few Nikon lenses-guess I'll be waiting a few more months!! I hear Nikon has a history of lagging on release of new products.

I don't se the point in telling this here. It's nothing we can do to help you get a D100 faster.

Anyway, you have made your choice (and I respect it), all we can say is - one man less in the que.

Thanks for comments from devoted Nikon users. Just to note that I have been using my Nikon 990 (yes 990) for Professional jobs (Events, fashion shows, portraits (studio and outdoor)). So as I see it, even with the issues that may arise with any pro DSLR, I'll be better off, much better off.

Arthur.

ps. If work goes well I may opt for both the Canon and Nikon. Whose side will I be on then?

yea! so long, jerky! and don't stumble on the way out!

haha.. i'm just kidding. i don't even own a digital camera right now. i just think the rivaly between canon and nikon users is fun. kind of like the r6 vs. gxr-600, and UT vs. A&M. stupid aggies! gixxer's can't turn worth a hoot! pff!

but soon, i'll be owning the d100, or the d60. and with that last piece of equipment and some fresh batteries, i'm going to free the world.

don't forget the R1 v Blade v GSXR1000 v 998 v .......... as you see the choice is massive. I am a D30 owner who just couldn't afford a D1x and had I known about the D100 3 months ago, well who knows.........

nah.. i could spank any of those liter-bikes on my lil' r6. agility is where it's at. the r6, or maybe some little aprelia.

actually.. i'm just talking smack. i really ride like a wuss. i'm too scared to do wheelies on purpose, i go into turns with the utmost of caution, and accelerating, in general, just scares me.

but i sure do love to ride.

The answer to where you are going to be is obvious.

You will be, where you were before you posted your first message.

On the OUTSIDE!

Happy with NOTHING!

If you have the cash to try both systems, go ahead. You will be twice blessed.

This is not about sides, forum users will keep to themselves, they have better things to do than start a brand war (i.e. take pictures and more pictures and share their joy and knowledge), except when someone crosses over the other forum, begins bashing the other brand, trolling, etc.

Congratulations on your choice! It seems its got nothing to do with the D100, but just release dates we all can't do anything about, plus the time elements of your job.

I just bought myself a D1x, and to date have been very happy with my photos. I've seen the 1D and its an excellent piece of machine. Both come with standard factory default settings, and if you're the type that wants immediate results without further exploring, the 1D will allow you to gravitate easily toward Canon. With a little time with both machines, you would not be able to tell what camera took which picture.

i've been a Nikon (FG, F3) user since high school, I've moved from Nikon to (switch from film to digital) Fuji, JVC to Olympus, and now I'm back to the NIKON D1x. In a couple of years, I'm sure new models will come out........., i'd like to be able to prove myself right that regardless of what brand, model i am using, i've grown to be a better photographer in the last few years.

As they say, "Life is not a destination, but a journey, AND so are you Photos and photographic equipment!"

Arthur,

Here is what I can deduce from your words:

1. You are frustrated waiting for the Nikon D100, which is normal and many people are!

2. You prefer Nikon over Canon and you know that you are about to buy a camera inferior to the Nikon.

3. You are trying to justify to yourself the purchase of the Canon by saying that there would not be any "huge" differences between the Nik and the Canon. No-one knows yet - there might indeed be "huge" differences - not only in terms of image quality but also in terms of the hardware performance.

Lastly, I don't mind if Nikon takes 2 or even 3 more months to tweak their softwares to match Canon. At least we will be getting value for money when the beast is released!

How important is the need for a DSLR for your job right now, only you know! If it is a question of losing money or potential clients coz of that, then I think you are right going the Canon way. Else, it's just a case of impatience.

The D100 will have a few advantages over the D60 but it will depend on your shooting conditions.

Otherwise the D60 is an excellent choice and I don't see much between them as you say.

All of the manufacturers have had their share of strengths. Let's say the Nikon with its' fine autofocus. Even if the DiX uses a hybrid CCD chip that some say yields lower resolution and higher noise than a D60.

Or with the D60, which some claim will never match the auto focus quality of the Nikon-- but may yield superior visual results.

Neither the D60 or the D100 are likely to be the equivilent of their big siblings in quality. Neither Nikon or Canon are likely to design a prosumer DSLR that is going to achieve superior results at one third the price. Something has to give.

If you are waiting for the D100 to have a superior square pixel 6MP chip than the D1X with the same auto focus quality, think again. Canon's EOS 1D auto focus quality is clearly superior to that of the D60. But the D60 is still an astounding accomplishment.

The D100 will also be a quantum leap forward. But don't expect a $5000 camera from it. What will they leave out? Hard to say. But the D60- being released earlier has already had its' strengths and weaknesses exploited.

Trust me- the D100 will be exploited in the same way. Vaporware is always the fantasy. Wait till you see one or read about one in actual use. Then make your decision.

i consider it a good healthy respect for the bike. i ride it about an hour every night, and it's the cool combination of relaxing, exilerating, terrifying, and those little glimpses when you're 'one with the bike'.

do you ride?

Actually, it's Aprillia...no big deal, though....but why do you buy
a machine you're afraid of ?

Wow, it's refreshing to see a such a fair-minded tone of discussion for once. Canon or Nikon, each has it's pros and cons. Everyone has to decide which issues are most important for themselves. Remember, the best camera is the one who have in your hand and you can actually use. There are alot of beautiful images Arthur is going to be able to capture between now and the time the D100 comes out. Isn't that worth something? Aren't we photographer rather than mere equipment fanatics?
