iPod Touch

Apple specializes in over priced and over rated products. Ipods are
no exception.

I bought an Iriver MP3 player three years ago after looking at and
dismissing the Ipod. The MAIN reason for not buying an Ipod was
Itunes.

I can drag and drop music and photos to my Iriver H320, it handles
DRM files, and most relevant for this forum it can be used as an
external USB drive. I can off-load files from my D70s to the Iriver.

Try THAT with an Ipod!
You can drag and drop music into an iPod using the iTunes software and other 3rd party programs. The other mp3 players are great I hear, but i think the iPods have the best hi-fidelity in the portable player market.

The new iPods handle various music file formats: AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV. More info here: http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/specs.html

I use mine as a jukebox connected to my home stereo in the living room, a jukebox connected to my iPod ready car stereo, when I work out, bike ride or ride the train and i also use it to spin tunes at a club I DJ at..........so i have many uses for it.

Hi Dez,

My Iriver can handle multiple music formats too, but that wasn't my point.

In my case I simply don't want to HAVE to use third party software to load my music player. I can open Windows Explorer and move stuff around without loading down my PC with additional software.

The Iriver and numerous other media players may also be used as external storage devices. In other words, for example, I can connect my device to my office computer, copy relevant files to the device (even though it can't "play" them), then bring the device home and move the files to my home computer. I'm pretty sure that can't be done with an Ipod.

Lastly, as I indicated in my first post, because the device CAN be used as external storage, I can also connect it directly to my D-SLR to view/move files.

I have no doubt that the Ipod's an OK device. It must be considering the number sold. I think it's more about the interface than sound quality, though. Despite the limitations of the MP3 format, I'd put my device up against any other in terms of sound quality. However, I've NEVER used the earphones that came with my device. I use a decent set of portable Senheiser headphones which I'm sure would make any MP3 player sound better.

Lee, you can drag & drop using Windows Explorer or any file manager into the iPod as well. You can create a folder and call it "whatever" and drop files in there. I've done it before, but I dont use my iPod as a storage device.

The iPod will also let you directly connect to any camera with an optional accessory.

As for sound, i've heard several Creative Labs mp3 players, SanDisk models, Sony and I think the iPods sound the best in my headphones. I use Sony large diameter driver headphones to listen to music. Also, in my car, the iPod sounds incredible and I can use the car stereo to control the iPod with the built-in interface.

I am not knocking other mp3 players, but for me, the iPod since the 3rd generation has been my choice and i just wanted to let the forum know of the new releases this week ;)

Ok, I get it, like I said it’s apples and oranges as far as what you use it for I guess. I’m looking at the iphone as a replacement for my blackberry, I love the screen for the internet (on the go not WIFI), and the big screen to handle my email.

I could live without the iphone being able to hold music as long as it has enough space for me to hold some word docs and spreadsheets.

My point was that the touch is not just the iphone without the phone, you lose some of the best features of being able to access the internet and email anywhere. I could almost not show up at my office, I could be working anywhere :-)

Either way, the iphone/touch is very cool.

I know this is probably off-Forum topic but have you seen the new
iPods, including the iPod Touch?

Pretty amazing device with 8Gb and 16GB capacity. Holds music,
videos, photographs and has built-in Wi-Fi.

I dont like to use iPhoto for all my photos (boggs down), but for selected photos for slideshows it works fine, and it would sync the photos over to the iPod Touch.

Hi Dez,

No offense taken and none meant!

I've never been a big fan of Apple stuff, though I'm sure the Ipod must be decent since it sells so well.

My only regret with my (now over three year old) purchase is the lack of "Iriver" integration. Oddly enough, when I replaced my battery a few months ago I found that it's just an Ipod battery to which I have to reverse the polarity at the quick-connect to the main board!

I was under the impression that you could not load files AT ALL without Itunes. Am I wrong? I have a number of friends with the Ipod and I occasionally hear complaints about either the device or their PC "crashing" and resetting the "partnership" between the PC and Ipod being a pain in the rear. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something.

I was also unaware that the Ipod was at all capable of being used as an external device, even with an optional adapter. That's interesting to note.

Headphones mean a LOT in sound quality. The bit rate you use is also highly important. I personally use MP3 at 160-192kps for a decent compromise of sound and space.

Hey Lee. I've never been a fan of Apple until they invented these iPods. I am a PC user since the mid 90s and I build systems as a hobby.

You can use iTunes to import music and photos & videos. For other files, you can simply use Internet Explorer. I think the requirement might be Windows XP or higher.

Also the fact that the iPod interface is so widespread that car manufactures are now importing it into their systems...........home stereo components also have the iPod interface....and etc. Apple keeps creating these partnerships and that is why they are so popular.

I also encode my MP3s to 192k

DezM:

1. The ones you mention, are basically the "iPhone", with the "phone calling" features left out, :-)

2. But, yes, all of them are quite good; though with more than one or two full-length movies, one should consider a higher capacity iPod (60 GB or more, based on my use of iPods) ----- and, you will have quite a "theater" in your pocket, that can be easily shared with others, using their wide-screens when you visit them (tell them to provide the snacks or dinner, and you will bring the movies, :-)

BRJR, right. I don't need the phone. I already have one that i like.

Like i wrote before, I don't intend on watching videos on that screen. But, YES to music, the internet and the use as a photo viewer.

Dez,

In the interest of full disclosure, another reason why I didn't want an Ipod was that even three years ago I was sick of seeing them all over the place!

You're definitely right about the advantages of Ipod docking, though. That's the one thing I'm missing out on. Even my new Yamaha A/V receiver is capable of Ipod docking!

While I'm sure Apple computers are fine, I don't quite understand what supposedly makes them SUPERIOR for graphic artists. I'm very happy with my decently powerful PC with WinXP, Paint Shop Pro, Nikon Capture, and PS CS2. I use PSP for simple viewing, NC for RAW edits, and I'm just beginning to learn CS2.

If anyone has any insight into the Mac's supposed advantages in graphic arts, I'd certainly like to hear it!

I don't! To each is own! MAC and PCs can co-exist :D

Im sick of seeing iPods all over the place too but maybe it's a good thing. The more that are out there, the better the support will be.

I too do wish the flash drive is bigger. But, if I am only going to use the iPod as a music player and NOT for the video, then I would go with the iPod Classic. That version might fit you better as a sound engineer and a DJ since you might not care much for the small screen and the 160GB capacity is quite nice.

I have a 4G since it came out and have always wanted something similar to the iPod touch (but with much larger storage), but over the years, I have realize that there are so many other players out there that satisfy my needs with additional formats and ease of use. Now, I only use my 4G as a portable hard drive, sometimes.

You are probably going to hate this, but I am not very good with sound so, almost anything that plays decently is good enough for me. :) It could even be 64kps or less if it is an audio book. :)

Hence, I purchased the Archos 604 last year. The 30GB is small, but I was able to hook up to my camera and download pictures and store some videos so I can watch on the plane.

Like I said earlier, if the iPod Touch has a bigger drive and support more video formats such as DivX or Xvid, I will be all over it. :)

The iPhone is just an IPOD that makes phone calls. Not that revolutionary.

I had a phone that does everything the IPOD does (plays music, surfs the web, wi-fi, plays video, display photos) almost 6 months before the IPOD came out......and it was free.

I guess if you don’t use your phone for internet on the go or email
this would work. To me it seems to be missing half of the function
of the iphone. The ipod touch is just a fancy ipod, the iphone is a
revolutionary communication device all in one.

I don’t have one yet, waiting for the price drop. I see they slashed
the price on the iphone by $200, so it’s getting tempting. I can’t
wait to be able to do mobile email and internet on that big screen,
by cell phone has a tiny screen.
