Who knows how to use an external 420ex flash for outdoor fill with the G2? Normally you can use the flash mode selector to force the flash on for outdoor fill. When a 420ex is mounted on the camera, you can't change the flash modes for forced on operation. How does one use the flash for fill outdoors?

Mark,

I just got my 420ex two weeks ago, so I'm no expert. I did try flash fill outdoors, though. If the 420ex is on the camera and turned on, you've got flash fill. Just adjust the amount of fill to suit your taste with the flash adjustment on the white balance menu. I thought it would be harder than that. One photo I took was at a local college. There's a porch with a very tall arch. I shot through the arch towards another building. The inside of the arch was too dark, so I fired up the 420ex. It worked great! Added just enough fill to bring out detail without looking obvious.

Good luck,
Doug

Actually, Tv and Av are fill flash modes. I think any time light is greater than 10EV, fill flash is automatic in these modes. Atleast that is how it goes with the Elan7 and the 420ex.

I always use Tv or Av with the G2+420ex and get great results.

What about manual mode? What I would like to do is: meter the shot in P mode with the * button, note the suggested values, switch to M mode, dial in the earlier values, use the flash (my 380ex or the internal) just a wee bit to lighten the darkest areas. But in M mode, you can't step the flash output down. Or can you?

I guess I'll have to experiment more with Tv/Av. I only recently started venturing into flash fill...

Tia for any thoughts :o)

You don't have to go into P mode, the G2 meters while in M mode. It indicates exposure values (- or + or 0) as you vary shutter and aperture.

The G2 does allow you to vary an external EX speedlight such as the 420 or 380 in M mode using the flash exposure compensation (using the WB etc button). Full flash power is at FEC +2. This doesn't work with the internal flash.
