Hello,

Im looking into buying a new digital camera, the two that Im interested in is the canon s30 and the g1. Since they cost about the same and have 3mp, which camera do you think is better?

thanks :)

It all depends on what you want to do with your camera. They are really two different cameras, way beyond the 3mp comparison. I chose the S30 over the G-1 because I didn't feel for this camera that I needed the additional functions. I also liked the compact size. If you think you may want to use an external flash and additional lenses and you don't mind a slightly larger size, then the G-1 is an exellent choice. The swivel screen is great to have for a variety of reasons too. Don't let price and mp be the lead decision maker, figure out who will be using the camera and for what FIRST!

Good luck, doubleG

You may want to do a search. This question gets asked often. There's been lots of good answers. Agree with doubleG, though I'm on the G1 side.

hmmmm. well I value them both, but I guess functionality is more important. I guess what I mean to ask is which camera produce better quality pictures in terms of colors and details, and what about night shots and indoor/low light situations?
Ditto what the others said. Which do you value more, functionality
or portability? I chose the S30 becuase I wanted better
portability.

Picture quality between the S30, S40, G1 and G2 is too subtle and subjective to decide on that factor and that factor alone--althoughh given that fact buy which ever one is cheapest if you can only afford one. If you are a really rich person, then buy 20 coppies of all of them and run a test on them yourself and report back here if there is one camera better than the other==it's not clear at all that any one of the four really stands out in picture quality. One other thing--and I have found this strange--the S30 on several sites I have visited is said to be pretty much the champion when it comes to night shots. Another thing that amazed me and convinced me that all 4 do the same on picture quality was the color tests I have seen. In color tests all brands of cameras are remarkably different. Indeed, different styles of cameras from the same company are usually vastly different. In the color tests I have seen--all four Canons look precisely the exact same under exact same shots. This is why when I read at another site that all 4 cameras are really the same I pretty much adopted that opinion for myself. If it is true that they are precisely and exactly the same--then which camera do you like regarding all the other factors? Realize that if you intend to get into buying extra lenses--you can now do that, too, with the S30/40--there is a $50 adapter that you can get for both cameras that is rated pretty good. for versatility, price and a truck more other reasons I am still happy that I bought the S30. Also of minor import--the S30 seems to be ever slightly better than the other 3 in the hot/dead pixel category. But if you were to get such on any of the cameras--Canon has an outstanding record of replacing the offending camera. Do download the free program to test the camera for hot/dead pixels from:
http://www.starzen.com/imaging/

And test all 80 of your cameras as soon as you can and then report back here and let us all know how your scientific test went. If you are really, really rich--go for the +- discrepancy of 1% buy buying 1500 cameras from each and then report back here and elsewhere so that we can all know without having any doubt.

If I remember the S30/S40 has higher iso settings. G1/G2 has the better lens. Overall quality is very close. For the record I posted yesterday a few shots with my G1, Oly B-300 X1.7 tele and Fred's noice reducer, shot at iso 400. Here's a couple shots in low light (lower than it seems).

It really depends on the users. I didn't have the option of the S30/S40 when I bought my G1, but have held them and they're not that much smaller (before adding LensMate) in my opinion. Not enough, like the 110, etc. to offset the hardware options of the G1/G2. Though I'm considering upgrading to a D-60, so size isn't that important to me. Consider where the camera will be going. The S30 & S40 are not pocket cameras, though work very well in a pouch or purse. Depending on how small the pouch and purse are the G1 may not fit.

Another G1 advantage- Decide if infrared is important to you. For most it is not. But if it is, the G1 excels that that.

Shot with a Hoya R72 filter. Adjusted in Photoshop when I obviously didn't understand curves.

Hairy-

I believe that this is the LEAST OPINIONATED response that I have ever seen Daniel give. I don't know about the comparison between the S30 and the G2, but it is a close race between the other 3 and since you're only really considering the S30 and the G1, you can't go wrong. I have heard about the dead pixel dilema (Daniel, thank you for the testing link) but no one seems to worry too much about it. I'm sure Canon is good about a fix. If size isn't important (hold the jokes) then the G1 is great with the swivel screen and hot shoe. Both are similar in price, S30 @ $439 and G1 @ $499? so go with your gut and don't look back. Enjoy.

The S30 has a iso of 800, but if you look at the tests, there's a ton of noise in them, so it's really not worth a damn. You're better off shooting at a lower iso and putting it on a tripod for a longer exposure. The raw file will capture more detail anyway.
