Troll of the month

... if you want to win the prize for September.

I'm afraid your dropping in with one nonsense post just won't make the grade.

But don't despair, there are four weeks to go till the next award, and you are at least off to a good start.

Why should you be embarrassed because he is an Australian? Aren't
there any ^¨? in Australia?
For the same reason that I was proud when the Sydney Olympics went so well (even though I didn't want them here) or am embarrassed when our Prime Mininster John Howard sucks up to George W. over Iraq (even though I've never voted for him).

I like where I live, and even though we undoubtedly have the same number of ^¨? as anywhere else, I'd prefer if they didn't draw attention to themselves. Makes us all look bad.

they are insecure in their decisions and need someone to jump in and agree with them. But in this case, as described in the original post, there may not really be any decisions.

While we do have some excellent examples of trolls, they pale in comparison to some:

http://www.cbc.ca/cp/Oddities/070831/K083106AU.html

Inflaming the semi-amused wrath of Oly DPR users isn't quite in the same ballpark as enraging the Shaolin Monks. I feel we're being let down; I'm hoping September can bring us some truly great examples, otherwise I'll have to 'jump ship' to a site where the trolls really excel...

Whats the prize for "Troll Of The Month"???
... is in fact a special trophy I've had minted. The problem is that
the winning troll will need to supply actual name and address so I
can have it delivered, by registered mail, of course :-)
Be careful, some trolls engage in the activity in a way that is not illegal, and would hand over a real address in hopes of receiving a prize.

That puts you in the place of the folks who do the annual "Golden Raspberry" awards for bad movies. The winners seldom show up to receive their award, but in the few cases where they do, there is an actual award: it is plastic, spray painted gold.

One year, comedian Bill Cosby won the Razzie, and he agreed to appear and accept it on the condition that they presented him with an actual golden raspberry. So the award folks had a gold cast raspberry made for Bill that actually cost more than an Oscar ;)

you have to hang out in the digicam (non-DSLR) forums if you want to see true fanboys. There you have blind faith in the new technology of big consumer brand company X which is always better than brand Y as determined by personal experience purchasing TVs, microwaves, and telephones. The Brand X digicams are so good in fact that no one in their right mind should even consider Brand Y or would ever want a DSLR; DSLR owners are simply irrational. Except weirdly when Brand X decides to market a DSLR, suddenly the fanboys consider buying one, but only if it comes with a 10X kit zoom (otherwise it just can't measure up to their digicam).

By comparison, I think ALL the DSLR forums are downright rational. Refreshing in fact.

A few years ago I asked a motorcycle guy why he and others didn't bash one another's favorite brands of bikes (like car guys do sometimes). He said "because we like motorcycles... ALL motorcycles". I thought that was refreshing. Kinda like if we all focused on photography I guess...

I was also particularly embarrassed
because he is an Australian. Anyway, my modest attempt at some
lateral thinking may be of some use.

They have more than their fair share.

For example, on August 4, the Sigma forum was invaded by a "flock" of brand new Australian trolls (or one troll with multiple Australian accounts). SigmaChrome, John King, and Puppetzinc.

One particularly loathsome toad of a troll, Jacob Milowski, banned at least 9 times, who actively stalks many dpReview regulars including Mike Chaney and myself appears to be from Oz, despite his typical claims of posting from the US.

The worst troll on the Fuji forum (jumbuck was his most common ID, but he had 3 or 4 others, including BigSmack) was another troll from down under.

And that's just off the top of my head.

I dont understand the need to come to a place where the majority of
people are HAPPY with their decision to shoot with an Oly, and shout
about why other brands are better.
It has to do with the need for certain particularly vocal Oly fans to come to the more public forums (typically "news" or "open talk" and run their mouths with exaggerated claims of four thirds (tm) superiority.

I'm not saying they represent the majority viewpoint of Oly users, or even that the majority wouldn't throttle these people if they had their chance, simply that they're the "in your face" view of Oly users that folks in the "open talk" forum get to see.

This includes master troll Plusiotis, the only known dpReview troll to go "double gold", and make two different posts that got 150 post responses without his having to make additional posts to those threads to fan the flames.

So, the general dpReview population doesn't see the crowds of sane and polite Oly users, they see Plusiotis, D. Q. E, and the ilk. So, their view of the Oly shooter is a tinfoil hat wearing loon believing in conspiracy theories. It takes a lot of positive PR to clean up after what one net-kook can do to the rep.
I use a Canon as well as my Oly gear, and I find LOTS of faults with
it, but I dont go to the Canon forum and shout about how I prefer
Olympus..
No, you don't, but some Oly users do. Just enough...

roam the forums playing tit for tat, is that what you are saying? ;)

How about stamp collectors? Or photographers?
especially ones that go to as much trouble as this one. i mean,
what's the pay-off? i sort of understand the ones that cruise by and
just drop a one-liner---they're like vandal teenagers overturning
garbage cans---doesn't really take much effort.

but to put effort into it? to actually spend time doing it? makes
zero sense to me...
It's someone's hobby. I've interviewed trolls online before (an interesting experience, I'll tell you). They get enjoy causing a good rukus the way a birder enjoys spotting the red crested, orange bellied European wood thrush (I made up that bird, but you get the idea). They rate themselves (and other trolls rate them) by both the quantity and quality of the people that they suck into the meele, how long the thread lasts, what sort of rude conduct they can get people to engage in).

Makes almost as little sense as "troll watching", making notes on the habits of some of the more interesting ones. I do that occasionally, not on a day-to-day basis, but you would be amazed at how many interesting trolls one comes across in 30 years on mainframes, BBS systems, USENET, and web forums like this one.

I always thought our "visitors" were inclined to be routine here because our sensors are smaller! :)))

Love him or loathe him, Ken Rockwell coined a term which I believe
will end up in the Oxford English dictionary.

Don't get me wrong, I love new toys but the E-510 hasn't improved my
photography (if anything it's made it worse while I get used to the
camera) and I don't know what a spiffy new Canon this or Nikon that
is supposed to do for me in this department. Really, it's like being
given a Ferrari and thinking you can drive like Michael Schumacher.
There is actually a positive benefit to this. Now, with a camera, I am Michael Schumacher, and there's no reasonable level of gear I can't push to the limits.

But with a flute...

I own a wonderful flute. It's a hand built solid sterling silver Trevor Hutton, padded with Straubinger pads by the best flute guy in Michigan, with a Sandy Drelinger silver headjoint with gold wing lip plate (OK, I know, but I like a wing). It's an acceptable instrument for a performer at the symphony orchestra level.

There is no way that I can come anywhere near the limits of this beautiful music machine. In fact, what I do to the poor thing is an offense to the spirits of all the world's great flutists. When I play, you can hear Boehm, Mozard, Teleman, Lot, and Galway turning over in their graves. And Galway isn't even dead yet, he just turns over preemptively.

But the important thing is that I know I can never blame the flute for anything that is going wrong with my playing. Any problems are purely my fault. If your camera exceeds your needs and abilities, then you can be assured that anything that is going wrong is, indeed, your fault. A humbling point of view, but one that can really help you refine your art.

Fair suck of the sav! I can see the bloke who made that shaolin post was no bogan like the guy trying to dob us about how his new Canon is bonzer and how it will make him a tall poppy, though I think the ISO performance might be good for taking pictures sitting around the bush tele.

How's my Aussie??? Do I sound like I'm from Alice Springs yet?

A lovely image. And answers the question posed earlier about the prize for "troll of the month" - clearly a tinfoil hat is the answer. I'll mail it to Quozl as soon as I get an address!

There is a serious point behind this somewhere, however. If one looks at forum statistics for SLRs, it is clear that this forum is clearly much more active than the Canon or Nikon equivalents on the basis of market share - ie, the number of cameras actually out there. Ditto for Pentax.

Why is that?

And of course that would make the amount of trolling, both in here and "out there" much higher in absolute terms.

Food for thought.

Cheers, John

Funny you should mention Schumacher. Of all the sports you had to mention, you had to choose Formula 1, the 'sport' where nowadays every driver can put the blame on anything from the brain-dead race stewards to the other team stealing the technical documents on their own race car, to their race car being just plain uncompetitive--and even be possibly right. If photography were anything like Formula 1, every photog would be racing to dump their current gear to get a 1DsIII or D3 right now ;) ;)

not too far off about the fanboyism in this forum. I lurk in the other forums too and every forum, here in this site, has its share of trolls & fanboys, just like any other forum on the net.

But none of them come even close to this forum, it has the highest number of trolls as well as fanboys (and girls). Now, I wonder if it's the fanboys that attract the trolls here or is it the other way?

Perhaps not the best example but Schumacher himself was something else. He could take any Forumula 1 car for a spin and then articulate to the engineers what they needed to do to give him a winner (oh, and as drivers go, the man is nuts). In that respect, Schumacher is any good photographer accept perhaps one of a kind in his own field 8-)

hehehe... Yes I am laughing hard at all these people that continue to have nothing better to do than defend their territory.

I was over in the canon forums reading about my new 40D and someone pointed out I had one a prize so I came to look :)

John, among others, you seem to think you are so clever with the detective work and a lot of others seem to have jumped in and claim yes you are correct... when youy are totally wrong. Everything I have written is the truth and other bits here and there might be a bit newbie emotion based on frsutration with the oly cams (yes both of them).

Just very briefly so you can go waste more time trying to prove truthful people wrong (for whatever reasons of your own)... for the record.
  • I first bought a e410 on a work department budget! Oly refunded it for your information due to problems they had no solution for at the time (in their words).
  • The same work budget was used to replace it with an e510 (don't even try to work out my logic here as I care not explain it). Nevertheless I still own this e510 twin lens kit at present (oh wait to be absolutely correct my company owns it and one department uses it).
  • If you read properly and follow my posts detective John, you will then see I was in need of another camera for work and another department plus this would be for my personal use. Hence my deliberation over oly + 7-14 or swap systems and go canon and 10-22. Up came the 40D and I made my choice.
  • All the figures and comparisons in prices stack up here in Australia. There was never a denial that the 7-14 would be better than the 10-22 it was just best price to get in sub 20mm overall). Are the maths that hard for some... then 7-14 here is $2800. Thats the exact amount I just paid for the new package of canon 40D + 10-22 + Several accessories.
  • Oh and the one pic I posted was from the e410 + kit lens (done in HDR) hence no exif. I posted it just for fun not to prove anything. But of course you know beter than I do with your wrong assumptions of course (you also should be wise enough to know better than to assume.. as the saying goes...)
John, at first I though you were ONE OF THE FEW here that had some common sense and gave objective intelligent answers, but you have just shown your true colours. If I am a troll (whatever) so be it... but you must be too just by simply wrtiing this post and doing all that diggin and then maing up absurd conclusion that simply are not true. Shame on you!
