Hi: I have a question about the number of pictures a person can take with the G2 battery. I have seen posts in this forum claiming as many as 1000 pictures (under optimal conditions) from a single G2 battery charge. My camera is new and I have read that Li-ion batterys have to be recycled about 4- 6 times to achieve fully rated capicity. I have an extra battery and a trip to Antelope Canyon and related slot canyons in a few weeks. Is there any way to recycle my batteries to provide some type of optimum charge carrying capacity without buying any extra equipment? I am currently using the camera to recharge the battery. I would rather spend my money on extra memory and filters than exotic charger/dischargers. Thanks, Tim

Whoops, Ivan, thanks for the prompt reply. I had hoped to avoid spending more $ for more stuff, but if I don't get any really innovative cures, then I'll get one of these charger/conditioners. I bookmarked the URL. Regards, Tim

I was not saying you needed the charger.. At the bottom of the page is a button named( educate me)about NiMh batteries if you click on that button it will take you to many answers to your questions.

The G2 battery's a Li-Ion, right? But the info at Thomas is about NiMH batteries. aren't these completely different?

Buck, the charger that Ivan suggested was for Li-ions as well as NiMH batteries. I still want a cheap solution if possible. I'd like to save $ and not have to shoot 5,000 pics to condition my batteries. It is actually moot, since I have an extra battery. But I'd like not to have to spend 60-80 bucks to discharge my Li-ion batteries without ruining them to have the piece of mind that I have enough juice to get through a days shooting in case I haven't brought along my whole photo kit to go to the park. The following is a quote from

Li-Ion rechargable batteries DON'T require complete, deep discharge or recondition puposely before recharging like the NiMH couterparts do once in a while. This is because they have counter-measures to avoid damages caused by overcharging, overdischarging reverse-polarity charging and extreme temperatures. It is controlled by the IC on both the charging system and the battery packs. In fact, properly manufactured Li-Ion batteries "love" to be top up always in order to keep its life span longer.

Hmm. I'm no expert here, but I don't think that's the case; that Mach 1 charges Li-Ion only , so far as I can tell.

Sometimes chargers can double and do NiCad and NiMH, but Li-Ion's a whole 'nother ballgame, I think.

The "educate me about NiMH" link appears at the bottom of every page on that website, it looks like, regardless of whether the actual page is selling NiMH products or not.

Maybe a battery guru will jump in here. :)

Tim, after reading the responses here I carefully read your original message. I have two batteries for my G2 and I haven't noticed that recharging them several times has added much capacity. Your trip to Antelope Canyon will be "in a few weeks." That should be enough time for you to recharge each of your batteries a couple of times or more, as you practice with the new camera. We don't know how many shots you might take. We don't know how you will use your camera - LCD use, etc. We don't know if you will be able to recharge at night. Are you camping out? Don't expect 1000 shots from one battery charge, but you can probably count on 200 or more. Search the threads for battery life to get a better idea. My guess is that two batteries (maybe just one) will easily last all day shooting, unless you're planning on filling a couple of 1GB microdrives each day. I don't know of a safe method of quick-discharging the Li-ion batteries - maybe someone else does know.

Hope this helps a little.

Li-Ion battery requires no special handling. Just charge it when you run low, top off if you want to. The MACH I is a speed charger. It just gives you a faster charge than the camera. Do not discharge your Li-Ion battery. If you don't have the latest G2 firmware, you camera may refuse to recharge it if you fully discharge the battery with anything other than the camera.

Hey, thanks for the input. I had completely forgotten about the topic of the firmware update. I had a thought, maybe I could leave the camera on (defeating the automatic turn-off timer) and let it run dead. However, I might just be asking for trouble. I'd hate to mess up either batteries or camera. The reminder is well placed. I'll just have to shoot more pics and top the batteries off at night. After all that's why i spent $40 for a spare.

Battery Barn sells the AC-511 which has 400 mAh more than the Canon battery.
