I had a friend a few years back that was a fantastic photographer. He retired a number of years ago and moved to Arizona. I heard he got his pilot license and developed a love of radio controlled airplanes. The last time I heard he was flying all over the country, entering in different events. He has taken tons of photos from the ground and I heard he had also taken some with remote cameras attached to the model airplanes. He is a film photographer if he is still doing this. He's about ten years older then me and I have lost contact with him. Well anyways what I was wondering is has anyone thought about radio control airplanes, race cars, etc. and combine a hobby such as those with their love of digital photography. Also can anyone think of any other hobbies which would be fun to combine with digital photography. I could probably use my E100 to shoot turtle races. Just a thought, what's yours?

Gene,

My thought is , I hope you don't push this thread to the 150 mark
like the last two you were involved in. Geez ! Don't you get tired
of arguing with everybody over nothing. How about a few pics
every now and then?

Just my thoughts

Here goes nothing. BTW, I was on debating team in college. But that was many, many years ago. Also any ideas on a complimentary hobby to digital photography?. I hope you don't get mad at my post. I just try an have a little fun. Take care.

Gene - I have always been interested in gardening and when I retired I took the training to become a Master Gardener and became even more involved in that hobby. At the same time I had always enjoyed taking pictures of my garden and other people's flowers.

A few months ago I bought a C-3020Z and I have taken a lot of flower pictures as spring arrived here in Texas. Take a look at http://www.pbase.com/mrd/flowers and you will see my gallery.

It looks like both hobbies are serving you well. Your flowers are beatiful and your pictures of them are colorful and sharp. You have to be proud. Thanks for sharing. Take care.

Gene,

Not mad at all. Just can't figure out why certain threads command
so much attention. Especially ones that have had as much exposure
as the 700vs2100 debate. It's always the same 2 or 3 people that
love to stir the pot. You seem to be one of them lately. It seems
that wherever Daniella is , that's where you are. No need to defend
her or her camera. She's quite capable. LOL

As for your original question... I would love to combine photography
with some form of diving. I love the ocean and would like to try
some underwater photography. Maybe this year !

Still not mad,

Tim

Would love to see those underwater shots when you get them. Your right, I have to lay off those debates. There is so much great things posted here on this forum. All the tips and the beautiful photos. All inspiring. Next debate, beautiful tips vs beautiful photos. I think they're both winners. Take care.

Gene, good topic. Should be interesting...Tim, are you a certified diver yet? If not, you will really love it...

I have not yet bought an underwater housing for my digital cameras because I have a pretty good underwater 35mm setup with strobe that works well...

To bad the housings for digital cost as much as the camera...once the prices come down I may get one for my C3000...

Here's some underwater photos I have taken with my 35mm setup and scanned...most taken in Cozumel and Puerto Rico...

Now that I'm back to work I'd like to take more dive trips once I build up vacation time...

My wife and I dive local a lot in the Niagara river and Lake Erie. The visibility is OK for diving but nothing for photography like the Carribbean...

We also volunteer dive at the Niagara Falls Aquarium with the sea lions...

Here's my wife at the aquarium...

Those are great shots. The media is not as important as the fun as you are having with your hobby. Look forward to your post whether they're scanned from film or shot with a digital camera. Take care.

Hi Gene,

I am retired now, but been doing photography for over 40 years. I am a pilot, scuba diver, skiier and sailor. I have never been able to to afford to do all at the same time however. The one constant has always been photography. I sold my plane after owning it for over 20 years about 3 years ago and bought a sail boat. My love for the water is only excelled by my love of photography. On the water, there is always a photo, and I will never get enough of it. It is as individual as you are, but they can well compliment each other. I now make very good part time money shooting photos of sail boats at races and I get to be on the water. Good Luck and Keep Shooting--KenD-460Z, C-3030Z, C-2100UZ. )

You are living everyones dream. I spent four years in the Navy and love the open sea. Later this year my wife, daughter, and grand daughters will be taking a cruise. Hope to take a lot of photos then. Look forward to some of your race shots. Have fun.

This is a fun topic...an interesting way to get to know each other! When I got my digital cams I knew I also was going to need to get a more interesting life so I would have something to take pictures of!!

I have since joined a once a month hiking club, they are fairly serious and really get around Kentucky, we have Berea coming up, and another one near Mammoth Cave. I'm finding books and web sites about hiking in Kentucky; I've always loved hiking and it combines wonderfully with photography--most of the time--except when it's dreary and raining!

Looks like you found the perfect match for your digital photography. I will look forward to seeing some of your photos. Have fun.

I used to take pics from RC planes. Right after I learned to fly, about 20 yrs ago. Here are a few old faded pics and a little history.

Hi Gene,

I've always thought it was the other way around, in that photography is a wonderful compliment to almost any other hobby. For instance, if you're interested in astronomy, well, that's a natural fit. But, even if your interest is stamp collecting, you can shoot pictures of your stamps. I like sports (baseball and tennis), so I spend a lot of time photographing that. I like to help out at my local church so I shoot photos when there is a special event going on. Of course, there's my son, who is a hobby in itself!

So, it seems to me that any hobby + photography is a good compliment.

I picked up photography, then digital photography, as a hoppy to complement my traveling. I had this beat up old Honda that's struggled up the Rockies, Tetons, Sierra, Cascades, and the coastal ranges ( especially Big Sur ) where you can find some of the best views in the American West.

For only $50, you can get a Park Pass, which gets you and yours into any national park or monument for a year. It's usually $10 a head, so you feel obligated to go see a few ( different ) places. The fees go toward upkeep of the parks, and whatnot.

My favorites were the Badlands ( SD ), Rocky Mountain, Grand Teton, Canyonlands ( Utah ), and Sequioa. Unfortionately, I went to every one of these before getting a digital camera ... which was a pretty compelling reason for me to get one. Now I'm trying to see a few of the parks in Alaska.

That seemed like a lot of work. If I understood you correctly, you could only get one pix per flight. Even with that, when you got back your pictures, that had to be a great feeling. Awesome. Can you imagine doing that today with all the electronic remote equipment available. Thanks for contributing.

Hi Bill, you're right. I guess for me I am not as active as I use to be so the idea of an additional hobby sounded like a good idea. When you have a child around, it is not only a fulltime hobby, but also a fulltime job. Keeps you busy. You're right on the mark when saying that photography compliments anything you may get involved with, from astronomy to stamp collecting. Thanks for reminding me that any activity is a photo opportunity.

Well, I like running over animals with my car, so I've found digital to be a god send really. The instant feedback is just great.

Honestly, I've taken up bastardized scuba.... I mean snorkeling. I'll probably be getting an Olympus housing for my C3000 as well and spend most of my days in the water. ; ) Or at least when I can. I do have a plastic housing for it right now which I will try out, although I expect not much out of the image quality. It should do the job, but nothing fantastic and tack sharp. I'll use it more for indentification and that kind of thing. The thing I love about snorkeling over scuba is the lack of equipment, lack of expense, and lack of worries about gauges, regulators.............. It's all good though

Your right Forrest, traveling expecially to the great national parks around the country, has to be one of the great photo opportunities with the wonderful beauty and peacefulness those places offer. I would like to go this year or next to the Grand Canyon. I don't live that far, but I have never been. Thanks for your input and I look forward to seeing some of your photos from some of those parks in Alaska. It has to beautiful up there. Thanks for posting. Take care.
