40D RAW images not recognized??????

i just bought the 40D last night.
I took 5 images for testing purposes.....and have had no luck in
viewing.

I have Adobe CS3 updated.
iphoto gave error during import.
used Canon EOS utility to download the image to local drive, then
tried to open in CS3 and it also gave me the error.

both programs are saying the file is an unknown format.
I was able to do this with 20D....so is the 40D using newer RAW file
type?

has anyone been able to do this?
Where did you get the 40D from? I thought it wasn't out until September. If it is available now, I'd like to buy one too.

It takes a couple of weeks or months for Adobe to add the newer RAW formats to their products. The Canon provided software should fit your needs until the updates are finalized.

If you check benderbends profile you would see he is from Hong Kong, you are in the States, that is why he has a 49D already.

yes..i am in HK.....and we had a good supply for a bout a week.....but now most shops ae saying they are out and need to wait til middle of september.

You may open the raw file in DPP and then transfer to photoshop. The
16 bit tiff in photochop is closer to the original raw.

I am a lightroom kind of guy and hope to have my 40D soon.

This is probably the simplest converter.

I wonder though, which things are potentially destructive to change in TIFF

that aren't in RAW. For example although Lightroom can probably adjust white balance for a TIFF, I think RAW -> WB correct -> save as TIFF would have
higher image quality than: RAW -> TIFF -> WB.

Is that right? Anything else?

What will also be annoying is if you save your settings to 1.TIFF as 1.xmp, you probably (?) can't easily preserve it once you get the Lightroom update that converts 1.CR2 (or whatever the extension is now)

Oh well, can't be on the bleeding edge without some bleeding, right?

until RRS comes out with a 40D plate or L-bracket!!!

no raw conversion, no tripod... what a price to pay :(

is what this forum has become!
