I´ve been reading so many posts of people(here and over at robgalbraith.com),that had to send their 1Ds back to service because of frontfocussing, banding, underexposure or incorrect whitebalance, that I am curious to know an approximate percentage. So let us know, who had to send his camera back and who hadn't.

I sent my first one back to BandH for a stuck LCD pixel and what appeared to be some short circuiting. THe first one also had big dust goobers. Mark

Stefan:

Here are some problems that I've heard people sending their cameras in include:

1) HNL Fix (see note below)
2) Front focus problems
3) Exposure problems (i.e. constant underexposure)
4) White balance problems (i.e. ruddiness and red saturation)
5) Stuck/Hot Pixels
6) Dust mites afflicting the CCD

(1) Early production models (serial numbers below 6000, shipping with firmware 1.01) have a part which needs adjustment by Canon's Factory Service Center to deal with the Horizontal Line Noise (HNL) problem. This fix also does something to alleviate banding in these early production models. Canon says that this fix brings these cameras up to spec with currently shipping EOS-1D's.

Three firmware releases are currently on the market: 1.01, 1.2, and 1.3. Later production models shipped with either firmware 1.2 or 1.3 and already included the fix for HNL.

As for mine, I sent my EOS-1D in for fixing (1). It went in on Monday and came back on Tuesday the next week. Since then, I have been extremely satisfied with its performance.

I had mine 2 days, it underexposed, I sent it in, they assigned it a low priority by mistake, after a week they finally got it fixed (they claim), they promised Saturday delivery so I'd have it for a Sunday assignment, they never shipped it. Still waiting.

So you should also ask - how many people got theirs back? And did they work when they were received?[email protected]

Thanks Adam,

until now we have 4 people, who answered, two of them had to send it back.Let's see, what percentage we will get in the end.

The percentage will be very low. Count the number of complaints across the forums and compare to the approximately 9,000 units produced so far.

Hi Al,

unfortunately not all 9000 1D owners are visiting this forum. So we just can´t compare 9000 units to the few complaints here.We only can make a comparison within this thread and hope, that not only the ones with broken cameras will take part.So let's just see, what comes out.

You have to remember also that a lot of very satisfied owners never make it to these forums at all(they don't even know they exist).

People with problems are the ones most likely to post, everyone else is out taking pictures!!

Right,John.That's a problem.

My banding is very minimal.

No font-focusing issues.

I do have some "hot" pixels at ISO 800 and above, but they can be addressed via software (YarcPlus) once the 1D SDK becomes available.

Mine works fine with minimal banding. It came with firmware 1.2 installed and the serial number is high enough that the horizontal line issue was already repaired. I have had no front focusing issues.

Could you explain to me what "banding" is? and the same with front Focus, how does that present it self? What exactly is this SDK software you refer to?

I am considering purchasing this camera. Thank you in advance for responding,

Chad.
