Sony did the same thing before they announced the R1

Not all that long ago there was a press release regarding a 60 fps sensor they had in the pipeline.

I haven't had time to compare them in detail, but this now has me wondering if it's the same device -- and they've had to pull in their horns with the expected frame rate -- or something else going on in the works.

It does sound similar inasmuch as they've managed to fit the A-D conversion hardware on the same chip, which bodes well for noise control; but it won't have the composite image stacking potential of the 60 fps one.

Either way, sounds like quite a milestone and something to look forward to.

Interesting times...
They posted news about the R1's sensor.

Same day that Canon announces their two new DSLRs, Sony announces a
new 12 megapixel sensor that operates at 10 frames per second and has
new noise reduction technology.
Maybe this news is only exciting to the the Sony SLR forum, because
they are anticipating a new DSLR body imminently.
But the Sony forum also needs something exciting to look forward to.
Come on!
R10
Bring it on!

the Zeiss lens on the R1 meant that Sony hardly made any profit out of the R1, as that lens cost so much to make
True or not, today, with the exact same lens a new R camera WOULD cost too much - as much or more than an Alpha. Makes no sense - but a Live Preview articulating LCD Alpha with the new sensor is a no brainer!

Turns out it was a 6.4 Mp array, though I'm guessing that it may be part of the same overall development drive. It's also based on the 1/1.8" sensor size, which makes it sound a very, very attractive proposition, noise wise, when the benefits of other more recent developments are added as well.

I've never had much success trying to search the News archive, and have always ended up browsing the headlines. But I just discovered a "News by keyword..." feature that I don't recall seeing prior to the site rehash, and it at least reduces the list you need to wade through. Choosing Sony brought up a conveniently small list, which led to the following blurb:

I seem to remember that the 60 frames per second sensor was a smaller
size with fewer megapixels. I couldn't figure out how to do a
search. Have they dropped that function?
