I know this might sound trite for most of you, but for me, the bracketing is literally the most important thing on the camera. I can't find the BKT button on the 300!! What is going on? Someone said something about a programmable custom button. Is this correct? And if so, can I use it for bracketing, hold it down, and spin the dials for stop increments and exposure bracketing like you can the D200?

It has been moved to a button on the front of the camera as the default for one of the custom functions.

I don't know, but I'm glad the playback button is in the same place it is on the D2 and D1 bodies. I got in the habit of hitting the bracket button on my D200 by accident because of it's former placement.

"The Playback button on the Nikon D300 has been moved to a more convenient position on the top left corner of the camera, replacing the location of the bracketing (BKT) button on the D200.

Changes to bracketing settings on the D300 is done by using the Function (Fn) button located on the front of the camera (default Custom setting f4), or can be be assigned to the depth-of-field preview button (Custom setting f5), or the AE-L/AF-L button (Custom Setting f6)"

By default settings, it's the Function button on the front (below the DOF preview button). You can also elect to have the AE/AF-L button or the DOF preview button perform this function.

That's a good point ... seems like they've plopped the image review button in its place, probably to make the latter even easier to find in a dark situation.

I very much doubt they would be fail to compensate for this though - I suspect "set bracketing" will be one of the many options for the FUNC button... perhaps one of our resident Nikonians (Bjorn & Co.) who have had a chance to play with the thing can tell us more about this.

That is a relief. So I'll be able to spin the dials and change the bracketing settings just like the D200, without going into the Menu?

that you will never need bracketing! Just kidding, there sure was enough space to put a BKT button somewhere. I would most likely assign it to the depth preview button.

Well I use bracketing for HDR, which I apsolutely love. If I can spin the dials while holding down the assigned bracket button, like you can the D200, I'm happy as can be.

The problem is that you are going to be doing both the spinning and the holding with the same hand.

If you are holding down the AE Lock button with your right thumb, what are you going to use to change the bracket step? If you are holding the DOF or custom button with your ring or pointer finger, what are you going to use to change the number of exposures.

This isn't an issue for me, because I never use AE-Lock and I always bracket by a full step. Others may have a problem.

My issue is this, I select the bracketing frames that I want, then hold the custom button with my ring finger whilst pressing the shutter, the camera fires of the bracket set at 3fps [or whatever the fps rate is set to] then stops. I use this often. If i have to assign the custom button to set the bracketing parameters, what button do I press to fire off the set ?

I hope the new set up can be made to work in a similar fashion. ie the custom button can be pressed, adjust frames with dial, keep button pressed and fire shutter to take the preset frames. Maybe.
