Who's considering switching to Nikon?

I don't know anything about the Nikon lenses, but I am sure Canon shooters automatically assumed their 35mm WAs would perform satisfactorily on digital FF before the first 1Ds actually hit the street.

I don't really see a 12MP cam enticing me away from my current 5D or the 5D mkII.

Now I know what Canon has at the top of it's tree for the next couple of years I might half jump ship and get a MF back and system.

Kevin.

You must be camera rich and lens poor.
Not a good assumption. 17-40L, 24-105L, 24-70L, 50 1.8 MKI (sold the 1.4 as I prefer the 1.8), 85 1.8, 135L, 70-200L F2.8 IS, 300L F4 IS, 1.4 EX II is not exactly lens poor.
Lets see what the 5D replacement is before making any assumptions.
Could be a long wait and will probably still have a weak autofocus system.
Unless you own a lot of Canon lenses.
Lets see, 8 L lenses, 2 EF-s lenses, 30D, 5D, 1DMKIIN, not even
considering switching.
Good lenses retain their value and are easy to sell. I have no problem switching to whatever digital system works the best for me.

"As I wrote elsewhere earlier tonight, I'm beginning to think that Nikon is playing the game differently this time around. In the consumer DSLR line, Nikon has taken the "best offense is to have the best offense" strategy. I don't know they could iterate any faster than they are, but they have cleverly opted for a "keep dribbling out better products" strategy, regardless of whether they were needed. The D70s was an example. The D40x is just another in that series. They're certainly staying in the news on a much more regular basis than any other consumer DSLR competitor, and with more differentiation per model. The fact that the early reports are that the D40x has better high ISO noise tendencies than the D80 with the same sensor says that they are moving very rapidly to close gaps. All is well in consumer cameras.

On the pro side, I'm beginning to believe that the new Nikon game is to let Canon make their 20/70 anniversary announcements, and then undermine each one. For example, the 1DIII gets announced in Feb. No reaction yet. It gets delivered in April. Guess when I expect Nikon to announce a pro camera? The same would be true with the 1DsIII, 30D, and 5D replacements (D3x, D200s, and D200x, respectively). Based upon the protos that have been floating around, I think they could actually pull that off. Time will tell."

lol.. you're right. I thought I'd sneak that "had" in there and you caught me :) Yeah, Canon does have good stuff. I love them both :)

cheers,

The funny thing is it wasn't that long ago (last week) a lot of
people wanted to jump ship from Nikon to Canon then now boom !!! All
these switching back and forth make my head spin into insanity.
Why care what the wind vanes here do or say after each press release?
Make decisions for yourself and stick with them.
Regardless, this is good for us the consumers.
Absolutely.
I stay with Nikon for
now but my eyes will always lurk over this forum because Canon sure
had some nice stuff going for them. Anyway, congrats to all us.
"Has" some good stuff going for them, not "had". Nothing has changed
regarding what Canon has or doesn't have, or what existing cameras
can or can't do. Nikon on the other hand just got some really nice
additions, about time, and as you said congrats to us all! :-)
cheers,
jacq

...back and forth, now I have both as I realize they are just tools. You can sell either brand's lenses at good prices and buy used of the other. It's not expensive to switch, really.

I am. But probably won't practically. Too heavily invested on L glasses.

Sure we haven't seen the IQ yet. But the spec is surely tempting.
The D3 looks like a smart cam. Doubtful that the IQ will be lacking though. Anyway, what a bunch of fickle people that are here.

I am first in line for a D3 and D300, if they scream, the Canon gear will go on the bay and the FM3A's and 5 Nikon lenses I already own will go into full service again.

Overall, Nikon has always made the better system, the D3 makes it complete again...

the people are nicer and more receptive on the Nikon dpreview forum. They seem to nicer over there, but now that they have a really good camera coming out, some of these canon users may be that "fickle" and decide to switch and post over there so I am waiting to see who is really going to switch and then make up my mind.

Just in case, I am just kidding.

I started shooting in really hot environments. There is something to be said about leaving a long prime in the sun and being able to pick it up without burning your hand off.

But then again, in the early days, I hated having a white lens. Now I love it.

Agreed. The D3 looks like a killer cam for my wedding work.

A white lens is more visible to your subject, whether human or animal, so it really doesn't do me any favours. It signals your presence and intentions.

hot as hell when you pick it up. Try picking up a big black lens in 100 plus weather that has been baking in the sun.

Your subject may be gone by the time you can hold the thing.

you are kidding rite?

it really remind me D100 has high iso but it never really work

We shell see the sample first then we can say WOW...

or after you finish wrapping your hands after getting second degree burns .. yeah, I do pefer the cooler coloured canon glass for that as well ..

why switch?

I already have a 12Mp FF camera, D300 is nice, but too many pixels shoved in a really really small sensor for my liking, which reduces the focal / shutter speed ratio even further to remove object blur and camera holding blur as the CoC will be so so small ..

another thing is the MSRP of the glass .. still too much more than canon's equivalent .. if I'm buying a 300mm 400mm I could toss in a 40D for free for 1.6 crop reach if I wanted and still be cheaper than the equiv nikon glass .. economics just doesn't make any sense ..

and btw .. canon still is the only company that current has made sensors larger than 12.1Mp .. with what .. 3 cameras now? it's not as if canon is behind the technology curve, but it will be great to see canon's answers in their next bodies!! and the "N" models next year ;)

I'm happy for the nikonians and for the competition ..
