I was notified today by Greg (at Canoga Camera) that a G2 (black version) has been shipped to me via UPS today (Thurs 3/28). He also sent me the UPS tracking number, so I guess it’s now official that the long awaited G2 black version has finally arrived in US stores now (at least at Canoga Camera anyway): http://www.canogacamera.com

Because I had to return my very recently purchased G2 champagne version (it unfortunately had a crack), I decided (this time) to go with the black version instead, in hopes that this might reduce the possibility of receiving yet another cracked G2. The great thing about Canoga Camera is that they regularly monitor our forum so are quite aware of the G2 crack issue and will allow me to return the camera if any crack show up. I wonder how many other camera dealers take enough interest to monitor our forum too? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Canon has solved the crack problem in these new black G2s just hitting the stores. It's interesting to note that when I spoke with Canon Tech support yesterday, that the tech support guy acknowledged receiving a complaint about a G2 crack well over a month ago. Apparently the person’s camera got fixed, so I wonder if Canon has corrected the problem in this new batch of cameras just released. The Canon rep also told me that the limited edition black G2s would only be made available to a few select camera stores and not large general retail outlets like Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. I had even called J&R Music World wanting the G2 black version, but they informed me that they would only be stocking the champagne version.

I got my notice from UPS today also ... I love dealing with Canoga Camera. They are the best in my book. Can't wait to get the G2.. I think from all I have heard from everyone at the forum that I made the right decision.

Thank you all for all your input.

Bette :)

WARNING: I will be asking alot of questions :)

Colour doesn't matter they say, but it sure does when it comes to acceptance amongst traditional camera owners.

I purchased my G2(silver) at the end of January and when they announced the BLACK I just wished.......

You see I was at a gathering which included some diehard film photographers, to them digital isn't photograpy, so when I pulled out the silvery G2, words of TOY could be heard.

I know traditional black would also attract less attention, so you would get less "what is that" comments.

As far as the right decision goes, I only picked up a camera(Canon A20) in August 2001, now with the G2 this is what it has allowed me to do.

As for questions, buy some traditional photography books(aimed at SLR owners) learn about Tv Av and the relationships of exposure.

I don't care about color... I just couldn't stand the beige. I don't like anything beige. The only other choice I had was the black. Now if it came it red.. I would be thrilled. :)

Do you see anyone advertising them? Why can't it be true?...I ordered mine and it is in route right now. Harrys in Canada did advertise it.. but I don't know what Canada was told to do or not to do by Canon. Call any retailer and ask them.

I bought from Canoga Camera.. here is there number.. please call and ask them why. 800-201-4201
Interestingly enough there is no mention at all of the Black G2 on
Canoga's site...

Grish:

Bette is correct! This is the SAME thing explained to me when I purchased my black G2. Because the black G2 is being produced in limited quantites, Canon has limited its disrtibution to only 'camera' stores. The G2 black limited edition will not be available in general retail stores. In exchange, Canoga Camera (and other camera stores carrying the black edition) have complied with Canon's wishes not to 'advertise' the black version. 'Sound insane'? Go Ask Canon.

Bette: It appears that you and I may be receiving our black G2s from the same production run, so it will be interesting to see if ours has the legendary crack or not. I'm expecting my black G2 to arrive (from Canoga Camera) on Monday. It will be fun to COMPARE notes. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Hi Scotty,

I am sooo excited to receive it.

I am just curious about Odessadreams comment about a crack to her Black G2. She picked it up from a camera store yesterday. Said she will not return it. If it was mine I would if at local store... Unless they only ordered one and cannot get another.

I was hoping that the "crack" issue would have been solved by the time the Black G2 came out.

Time will tell...

Yes we can compare notes.. and pictures.. hope you like horses.. LOL
That will be my mane (hehe) subjects to photograph.

This is wishful thinking. The black will no doubt exhibit cracks as well. Canon is only now acknowleging the problem and are begining to investigate it. The black G2s have probably started production weeks ago so no fix could possible be in yet.

The only hope is that the crack is a production problem and not a design problem. This way if there's multiple production lines (just guessing here) then maybe one of them has bad specs on something. Otherwise they'll all probably crack eventually.

Well... the material could've changed for black g2 since it is supposedly a limited edition with a production of only 10,000 ....

Does anyone know how the Black G2 will be described on an invoice and, more specifically, if Amex will pricematch it against the standard G2 ads? I know that Amex is giving some people trouble with matching the A&M ads but, even if I can't get them to go that route, there are a number of other ads out there advertising the G2 (but meaning the champagne G2) for $100 or more less than you can get it at a Canoga or B&H. I'm wondering if Amex will realize there's a distinction between the cameras -- not to mention the 96 mb CF card -- and refuse to pricematch the Black version against the current print ads.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've been waiting for awhile to buy my G2 and I think it's time... but, while the Black G2 would be cool, I'm not sure it's worth the couple hundred bucks it would cost me because I couldn't pricematch.

Hi Grish,

As I anxiously await the shipment of my black g2, I can only hope you're right. In the meantime, I was informed by Greg (Canoga Camera) that along with his shipment of the black G2s, that he also received a new shipment of the classic champagne versions too. It's important to note that the champagne color of this new shipment is different (slightly darker?) than the ones in the past. Makes me think that Canon may have known about this cracking problem longer than we had thought, and has corrected it in this most recent production release. To further support this theory, the new 'champagne' shipment also includes a RED dot on the box the camera comes in, possibly to signify that these are an updated model with an updated crack proof plastic casing? This may explain the reason why there was such a long G2 shortage in the stores. I don't think the G2 black versions have a red dot on their box, probably because the color of the camera is completely different than the original champagne version.

I just called Canoga yesterday (3/28/02) to be put on the waitlist for a black G2. When were you put on their list? I'm curious if anyone that was recently put on the list has received a notification of shipment.

G2 Black at Canoga seems to come with 96MB CF card, not the 1G Microdrive announced by Cannon for the G2 Black?? Am I just comfused or are there multiple configurations??? Thanks.

I received the call last night from my local camera store that my black G2 was ready for pick-up. Let me first say that the Black Body is beautiful!!! The additional 96 megabyte CF was a Lexar 12X.

So now to the unveiling: I rotated the camera in the light searching for the crack. Sure enough - I found the stress in the plastic. The black plastic was bubbled outward in the exact location the champaign bodies have cracked. I showed it to the shop salesman and all he said was a drawn out hmmmmmmmm.

I was really (probably wishfully) hoping nothing would be apparent. We agreed he would hold it for me for two days while I reflect on the pros and cons of ownership.

Best regards, jim

Just received a call from Canon (Liz) today informing me that I can send in my G2 in for crack repair (7-14 days). I informed her that I had already returned my deffective G2 champagne version to the store and that I'm now waiting for the black G2 replacement to arrive in the mail on Monday. I tried to ask her if she thought the black version would be subject to the same cracking problem, but though she tried to reassure me that the black one would be fine (no cracks), she couldn't back this up with whether the new just released G2s (both black & champagne) have been revised or updated to address the crack problem or not.
