Just speculating here, but ...

Couldn't the newly announced 40D, from an image quality standpoint, at BASE ISO, be on par or equal too the MKIII?

Assuming that is true, at the announced price point, that could be the deal of the century. Weather sealing and all.

If the images produced from this camera are, on par, with the MKIII, I see some serious potential from this camera. (BASE ISO)

This girl would seriously consider changing dresses.

I'll wait to see the comp.

I like the 10fps of the MarkIII. I photograph live etertainment with quick moving and changing lights.
But the 40d has 6.5 fps and is thousands less. hmmmmm?
I could by 2 - 40d's and still be well equiped for the show.
Thanks for making me think this one over....again... ;-)

It's probably going to equal the IQ. When the 20d came out it had equal IQ to the 8mp MKII which was several times the price, even at high ISO. The upgrades the MK3 has go far beyond just pixels and ISO though... but unless you really need 10fps and the tank body the rest is overkill for most. The 40d will be all the camera most people will ever need, of course alot of folks still feel that way about their 10D and D60. The images you can get now out of even entry level DSLRs is amazing, we just constantly want more. We humans are a hard bunch to please :)

The XTi is already on par, up to about ISO 400. If the 40D is better, then I'm sure it'll be interchangeable with the 1D3 up to ISO 800.

In the land of $350 DSLRs and $30 AMD CPUs, I still don't see $1300 as a screaming deal, but I suppose it's not bad relative to the inflated prices of more professional units.
