this seems a more substantial upgrade than the 20D to 30D.

My top five fav improvements are, biased toward sports shooting :

14 bit A/D
6.5 frames a second
3.0 inch LCD good for sorting out settings and focus without reading glasses.
30% better focus speed with 2.8 glass
Exposure line at top in single image view

Nice, very nice.
What improvements mean the most to you?

I think you said it all. I think its good enough to drop what ever we are doing so we can place an back order.

Tho 30D was good and is good and my 20D gets the job done too. Colors are great, focusing fast and best of all the battery lasts till I come home. Cant ask for more!
Please check my new Web site

Yes - I think the 40D will be a new significant point in Canon's history line. Canon seemed to have improved on all the more important improvements rather this time. THe other thing i REALLY REALLY like is the mention of the improved viewfinder. I've been waiting for a better viewfinder since the D60 and find i can't really spend too much time looking at the VF for long. Currently Nikon's and their higheyepoint VF definitely is better.

What improvements mean the most to you?
-Better viewfinder
-Better AF (assuming it's really better)
-Less noise (assuming same or greater detail captured)
-14-bit (assuming this makes a difference)
-Quieter shutter (assuming this is not just the case in Live View)
-More pixels (assuming there isn't a DR penalty)
-Dustbuster (assuming it works)

All of the above are very nice IMO, and overall I agree that this is a good replacement. The 20D -> 30D was a minimal change by comparison.

1. Much better focus system than my 350D
2. Much better viewfinder than my 350D
3. 6.5 fp (more than double the 350D!)
4. 3" LCD (blows away the 1.8" on my 350D)
5. who cares I want one!

I agree!!!!

I want one too.

Just placed order with Amazon.

This is a worth while upgrade from the 20D.

It has 18 languages on the menu.
The 30d only had 15 so that is a 20% increase!!

That means that the 50d will have over 20 languages at that rate!!!

I think so too. It's a very appealing camera. The 40D and 50mm f1.2 L could be a great low-light combo. Assuming the noise performance is on par with the 5D. Wow, I can't wait for the review.

As a 350D user, 40D is a very very solid upgrade. It got all the features that met my requirements, and also with additional features that I didn't think of. The newly designed focusing system is one of the most attractive area, and what the hell, there is weather-seal !!

Finally a worthy upgrade to my 10D. Alhough the 10D's output is very fine, the inacurate AF, slow CF write speeds and slow startup is starting to annoy me.

My expectations:

I hope the 40D's AF is as good as promised.
I hope the 40D's viewfinder is as bright as my Eos 33
The uograde from a 1.8" to a 3.0" LCD should be good
Spotmeter
Faster startup and CF write speeds
Less noise
Faster FPS

I am sure I will not regret this upgrade...

You make a good point. I am satisfied with the quality of the 30D. The two major drivers for buying my next body will be... big jump in low light performance, and, of course, moving to FF or H size sensor.

I wonder... if the processing power/speed will get high enough to allow filling the pixel "wells" two or three times for the same image, allowing 12,800 ISO?

not since the 20d have we really seen an upgrade, rather than a 'refresh'.

heck, i don't even think the 1d mark III is a real upgrade.

Think about it, the actual tested speed of a 1d3 is 9.6fps vs 8.3fps from the 1d2. and only 1.8 megapixels. Some will say better auto focus from the 1d3 vs the 1d2, but the 1d2 has an ultra fast, instant AF system, so what if the 1d3 is faster on paper?

neway, back to the 40d, canon is surely making the 1.6x cameras look good again. i mean couple the 40d with the 17-55 f2.8 IS USM and that combo could kick any other professional canon camera with a 24-70 f2.8 L USM, in terms of low light shooting. That is very important to me, as i'm a wedding photographer.

Also, you can get the wireless adaptor of only about $550 more than buying the $250 grip without the wifi. So for about $2100, you can have a super techy camera, with all the bells and buzzers, oh yeah, and i'm assuming great image quality.

I think after this year's season of field sports (i'm also a sports photog for my university), i'll switch to the 40d as my sports camera, and buy whatever replaces the 5d for my wedding camera, we'll see.

lenses make the image, the camera only records it. my zoom is my feet, not my fingers, don't be lazy, buy primes :)

huh?

Wow 12,800 ISO didn't take long, Nikon just announced 25,600 ISO with their latest D3. Looks like the performance vector is pointing at low light performance in the 50D?

Could be that the so-called 25K iso is just a bit of marketing crud, just like so many of the compact digital camera ISO ranges.

Who knows though.
