It has been completely overshadowed by new Canon announcements ;-), but Sony Japan also made an important announcement yesterday.

http://www.sony.co.jp/SonyInfo/News/Press/200708/07-072/
  • DX size, 4312(H)×2880(V) (approx. 12Mpixels)
  • 12bit A/D convertor built-in to each vertical line
  • 10 fps read out
  • Support crop mode
I'm not surprised if this is used in D300.

My guess is that it will be used in the D3h.

Putting it in the D300 and not charge much more then the D200 would be hard for Canons 40D ... do you think Nikon is tempted ? ;-)

No, I think it'll go in the D300. I still hold to the earlier Hogan posts that we should expect to see something that will knock our socks off. This sensor does not do that.

What will be in the D3? If I were to gamble on long odds I would say it is something more along the lines of the elimination of the traditional Bayer CFA. But that is pure speculation.

And now that Sony is in the DSLR business, how do you know they won't keep it to themselves? No guarantees that this sensor will show up in the next Nikon. Or is there?

Since Sony quote the price it seems like they are for sale.

I sad D3h, not D3x. Or will the next D2x just be D3 ...

Sony will sell the sensor to anyone that will pony up the price. They are in the profit making business, and selling sensors makes profit.

The new Sony sensor is an APS-C model. Thom is strongly suggesting, and many rumors seem to agree, that the D3H will be full frame. If that's true, then the new Sony isn't the sensor for the D3H. D300 makes the most sense.

to keep it to themselves would be a bad business decision, as they make lots of $ selling chips to Nikon and other companies.

I mean ... these odd ball crop sizes simply don't make better sense, it's good to standardize at either 1.5x or 1.0x.

Thom might have inside information, something he didn't have in the past when he started the predictions.

I thought the D2x was the one ppl expected to be 35mmFF just like many expected Canon to join the 1Ds and 1D series into one body ... didn't happen.

Not even Canon make the 1DmkIII 35mmFF but of course why would Nikon settle with same or smaller sensor then Canon in an 'action' oriented camera.

I guess we know where the sensor ends or not in a few days :-)

You are most likely correct. But I could argue that Canon is in the profit making business and they manufacture sensors. However, as far as I know, they are only in Canon cameras.
