Hi Ed,

Point well taken. I decided on this I liked more of a silhouette effect and a little more contrast. Also, the wind was gusting at 30 mph and swirling the snow skyward. My camera and lens just didn't capture much in the way of wood texture under these conditions.

Thanks so much for viewing and responding.

The photo really conveys that feeling you describe with your words.

Beautiful shot. I really like the dark tone of the photograph overall and I'm not sure I would like it as much if the snow was brighter or if the image was brighter overall.

But then, apparently I'm a newbie and my comments don't count... :)

Keep posting more photos. This one is really good.

So Tom... you have any suggestions for a photographer trying to improve his photos. (aside from keep taking more) which I love doing. The detail and color of your pictures are really nice. Yes, I went to your site and checked it out.

Nonsense !! Your aesthetic opinions are just as important as the next guy's.
Thanks for your comments!

Let me put it this way. I liked your image so much that I grabbed it to use as a desktop wallpaper... until the next really striking image catches my eye and replaces yours.

Of course, if that's a no-no, I'll happily delete it.

Feel free to use it as long as you like. Unless, of course, another image has already taken its place!

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the compliment! Well, I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable dispensing advice. Especially in light of all the talent in this forum. But since you asked, I think the most important thing is to photograph things you love - subjects which are meaningful to you and move you emotionally. Then do your best to be faithful to those feelings for your subject from capture through post-processing. Sometimes that means doing less instead of more.

All the technical stuff can be learned easily enough (I'm still learning). I try to use whatever technical knowledge I've gained to accomplish the above. I apologize if this sounds vague. I've found that modest equipment and basic technique, if used thoughtfully and with care, go a lot further in creating a satisfying photograph than lost of money thrown at fancy gear. So go out and photograph the things you love and carry that through to the final print (or web post).

Hope that helps and best of luck!
