Hello. I was planning on getting a D200 soon, but I came across this deal which I am pretty sure is good (thus I have already agreed) but figured I would get a second opinion.

D80 body w/box, original accessories, receipt, unregistered (3 months old)
Extra Battery
Camera Bag
Tokina 12-24 lens with Filter and Sun Hood
Nikkor 18-55
2x1GB SD Cards

The Tokina is where I really think I am making out. It will also be cleaned and I am getting a new LCD guard because his was scratched. So what do you think?

You say nothing about price and, plainly, nobody here can comment upon whether everything is in full working order.

My big query would be why is the present owner selling? I presume this is a private transaction?

Personally I would go for a lens at the long end before 12-24 but that fits my pattern of use.

Yeah sorry. Forgot the price ^ ^

$1100.

Also. It is a private transaction. I have dealt with him before and he is quite trustworthy. He says everything is in full working order.

You are geting a $1200.00 camera and a $ 500.00+ lens, forget the other items, all for $1100.00

You say you can trust the seller. Have you tried the camera? Is it a US Nikon import or gray area import. If gray Nikon will NOT make any repairs even if you want to pay for same.
Good Luck.

Nikon clearly states that warranties are non-transferrable and only apply to the original owner, so factor that into your decision. If the receipt has the other persons name on it, I suspect you will have no warranty whether or not it was "registered".

I have not tried the camera, but it is not gray market.

I will have to factor in the warranty thing. Is there any way around it? Supplementary warranty? Like Mack?

I am getting the kits lens, which I guess makes it $1200. Not sure.

I just spoke with the seller, he says he got it at a B&M Rtiz Camera. His name isn't on the receipt or anything.

I have bought most of my camera equipment and big ticket electronics in general off eBay from sellers with good feedback who have advertised their items as "Like New" or "Mint." I've been doing this for almost 10 years and have never had a mechanical failure on anything, although I suppose my number will come up someday. The only time I've had anything die was something I bought new and after warranty expired.

I know everyone always waves the warranty flag when it comes to used gear but the whole idea of buying used is to save money. There is always some risk involved in doing this, you just have to weigh it out. If you have the chance to inspect the items before money changes hands it can alleviate a lot of concern. Pricewise it sounds like a good deal if the Tokina lens is really worth $500.

Actually, that is illegal in most jurisdictions. The warranty travels with the product and not with the purchaser so long as the serial # is valid and the receipt is in order. One is under no obligation to "register" a product to get a standard warranty. Otherwise no one could send a gift across state lines and have the product warrantied.

What Nikon says and what Nikon can easily be compelled to do are different things. They're saying this to get tough on grey market transactions. Wrong approach, IMNSHO.

In essence, the company is willing to break the law to protect its short=term margins, at the expense of its customers. How can a company abadon its customers and hope to remain viable in the long run? I'm surprised there is so few compalints about this. I think it's outrageouse.

Read your warranty slip on any Nikon camera body or lens, that statement has been there for years and years. That's news to me that non-transferrable warranties are illegal, not so sure about that. I realize one doesn't have to register a product for the warranty to be valid, but non-transferrability is not that uncommon on a variety of products.

My understanding is Nikon can tell by the serial number if a product is gray market or not, so the warranty statement is a moot point.

Check your state laws. Almost all have a 1 year minimum stipulation under the UCC. Both express and implied warranties under state legislation and in case law have not allowed companies to sidestep the bare minimum with contrived registration schemes and similar limitations. Reseller rights are also protected. Again, if warranties are tied to purchasers, then gifts have no warranty. That's a severe inhibition on commerce and trade.

Yes, Different issue. Nikon has the right to control its distribution obligations. However, what most consumers need to know is that it is also Nikon's responsibility to control its channel, not the consumer. If a customer buys from what they think is a legitimate reseller, and then Nikon says no, the consumer has numerous avenues of recourse.

I've done it myself and have been very successful.

Thanks for the useful information. Yes, it is Nikon's responsibility to control thir channel; instead they foist their responsibility onto their customers by artificially creating a "gray market". (These are Nikon products, not some clone). There are other ways of managing currency fluctuations.

It sems thay just want to make cameras and not run a business. Well I just want to take pictures and not need to know my legal rights before buying gear. Is Nikon limiting their market to laywers?
