PhotoSig - I love this site!

I wondered about that Ann. :-) I'm SilverCharm on some sites and some people don't know that's me too.

Lisa

P.S. And I just got approval that I can take pictures of my namesake, Silver Charm, in Kentucky when we visit the farm that he is at in May. Hope to get lots of pictures of him. He's a beautiful gray.

That's must be why I don't get very many critiques. Not too many STFers comment on my photos. :-) Ann usually does and sometimes Faye and ZipperZ. Need to find yours so I can comment on yours Dee. :-)

Lisa
I've been hangin' at photosig too, trying to figure it all out. The
only thing I don't like is that a lot of the critiques are one or
two words of a complimentary nature, like Wow, great job, etc.,
without any real critique.

And yes, anyone can critique the critiques left and are actually
encouraged to do so.

Unfortunately the photographer has no way to respond to the
critiques except for e-mailing the person who left the critique.

I discovered you can post your photo link to the photograph forum
and ask for critiques there too.

I also am not fond of all the gratious nudity on the site. I don't
miind tasteful, natural nude photography but when the woman is
obviously being exploited my feminism starts to act up. I wish they
would put all the nude stuff on another area of the site. But then
I guess no one would look at and vote on the non nude photos - LOL!

It's strange seeing so many STFers on the site. I was hoping to get
feedback from "strangers" who might have a fresh vision and
opinions toward my work.

I'm also disappointed by some of the many really bad snapshots that
some people post! On the other hand I'm overwhelmed by some of the
really excellent and inspiring work.

Unfortunately too, like threads on this forum the photos quickly
get shuffled to page 4 or 5 or worse and if my photo doesn't get
comments right away, then it's lost.

But, hey, I've only posted two so far and am slowly gathering
points where I can submit more than one a day.

I also wish there was some way I could get feedback on the
critiques I leave. I work very hard trying to be fair yet
constructive, and I have no idea if the photographer or others find
my hard earnest work at all useful.

Hi Lisa,

I haven't commented on yours yet! LOL

I only have 2 posted so far, the dead whale (on the challenge) and an abstract I was playing with called Table Setting.

I have another abstract I can upload later on.

I have a gazillion photos to process as I just came back from Las Vegas, NV and took loads of neon shots!

Hi Ann & Dee......

Just a few interesting comments regarding both your posts on this Photosig site......

First I agree with every one of Dee's comments on the site. The two that seem most disappointing to me are.......

1. not being about to get into a post type dialogue about the comments / critiques that either I leave or that are left on my own images.

2. If you post your photo at the wrong time of the day (and I'm learning quickly what is the wrong time) you'll find very few people around to critique your image.

3. I don't like the fact that the images are up for critique for such a very short period of time.... very short. I think it would be helpful if each time someone critiques an image, that it get bumped to the top of the heap so to speak. That way, others can see the image that is generating so much interest both postivie or negative

4. Last, I find it incredible that it is so VERY easy to delete your entire portfolio of images... then resulting in loss of all your acredited points built up from people comments on your images. I know first hand, I did that on my first day on the site!!! :-)

You might find this interesting.......

I posted a pelican image. It got rave reviews by people who took notice of it....for which I was very thankful. Then it got deleted (as I said). When I uploaded it the second time.... flop!!!! lol Nobody liked it but one person.
It was kind of amusing to me.

Anyway, thanks for reading my rand here. And, thank you Camera Slug for the link..... it was informative.

Mark,

Thank you for the warning about deleting photos from your own portfolio. I had read something in one of the forums, either general or photo that someone had some the same thing and lost all their points.

I haven't even figured out how to delete a photo yet.

I did read that the person running the site is planning some new things in the next release of the software that the site runs on, so I guess it's not "carved in stone" yet.

You might want to consider looking up that thread and perhaps commenting on the accidental deletion. Maybe he can do something to prevent that from happening accidently again.

I think I almost have enough points to enter 2 photos a day now, LOL

Dee

Hi Dee,

I've gone one step further, I emailed the owner and he assured me in the next upgrade he is considering removing the ability to delete a portfolio from the site. Of course that was not much consolation to me but, I understand there's only so much one can do in those situations.

Cheer up about the points you've obtained so far.... you are a very talented artist, it won't take you long till you are uploading by the dozen.

:-)

Have a nice day today Dee!

I'm a lyric baritone, lots of range, uneven voice quality. Don't know the Bruckner... only thing I've done of his is a Te Deum about 25 years ago.

We did a Hatch Family Messiah this Chirstmas, with all four of us participating (choral, not soloists). Now my younger daughter is addicted for life.... and has the instrument to go places with it.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the kind words. I was able to upload two photos today!

I uploaded the dreaded "duck" photo, but it was a goose and a pipe abstract I took in a restaurant. These are more of experimental photos for me, as well as an abstract I uploaded.

I'm trying different things in search of a wider audience to get feedback from. But boy, those photos fly past so quickly. I'm thinking late morning Pacific Coast time is not such a good time to post or else my photos really suck!

Did you see that great shot of the kitten wrapped in a blue foam roll with just a peek of the floor showing on the bottom.

I'm the only lone voice saying I prefer the floor showing since I thought it grounded and explained the shot. Everyone else wants to crop the floor out of the picture. My only consolation is that at least the photographer agreed with me LOL!

I sure have a different take on photography from a lot of people, might explain why my photos just don't have a general population high vote. However, the people who "do" like my photos, really like them, so I can only please myself and critique other photos the way I see them. Viva la difference!

I'm still trying to figure out how this site works. I think it's sad that people can come in and give your plus photo minus thumbs and wreck havoc on your rating, though. There should be a referee available in such cases.

Dee
Cheer up about the points you've obtained so far.... you are a very

Just do what you like, that's what's important. Sometimes I post photos that I really like and get some answers like I should crop this or that out etc...Feedback is good and sometimes it means real improvements. some other times the photo is just as I intended it and in my opinion nothing needs to be cropped out because someone decides that some little thing is distracting. Distracting from what? You put things in your photos because you want to achieve something, not do something that looks just like every other photo, brushing that blade of grass aside etc...etc...or comply to what people asume should be in there.

Hi Dee !

sorry you are having such sad luck on photosig so far. You really have to be so careful exactly when you post an image Dee... that's what I've learned so far. If you catch the right time, which on east coast time seems to be right after dinner time and no later than say 10 pm (Im talking weekdays now Ok?) then you can expect to get more exposure than at other times.

Don't let the critics deter you from what YOU like to do with your photos Dee. I haven't yet seen the image you were referring to about the floor critique but, I will. As far as your "different way of looking at things" ... don't sweat it, I'm the same exact way. You can't appeal to all people all the time. However, if appealing the masses is your goal, all you need do is look at the images that get the most attention and follow the lead.... so to speak. Of course that mean you need to have access to pretty sunsets, pretty flowers, cats (not a problem for you :-), and you get the idea I guess? However, look at my two images... Closeup With A Bow and MacroSpheres.... they are certainly NOT your everyday image for the masses and, they got a positive response from what I can tell... and they weren't even uploaeded at the most popular times!

Last notes: that siite needs a little help to say the least. It's pitiful that images are exposed for so short a period of time and, there's no real logical way to search for images that is easy and convenient. Add to that.... there's no TWO way feedback sysstem where artist can respond to critiquest and then get a response back from the other side again... to me that's the most lacking in the site. Then of course there's the dreaded thumbs down... yikes!! Havn't gotten any.... yet. lol When I do I'll demand a full explanation!! LOL

Have a nice day.... I'll seek out your other images uploaded ther and, lend you a critique or two.

Mark J.

Sorry I didn't get back to you here right away... I do work now and then. lol

I can't answer your question though Dee, sorry. I only found out about this thread forum a few months ago from my brother in law. In fact, when I first showed up... I had no idea what in the world to do!! I had never visted a place that uses a thread based system so, I found my way slowly here. I feel as though I've come a long way...... controversy and all. lol

I took a look at your posts on Photosig today and, posted my comments oh wait.... critiques for each one. :-)

See you soon!

I know that Willis doesn't want a link where you see the photo here. He complained about that it takes away the bandwith from the site and he was fixing it so you couldn't. I think it got done because he messed up his regular site for a bit. You can probably do a regular link though.

Thanks for all the good vibes, folks! I know when you're talking about me because I see the message in my referer report. :-)

A few notes:

1. Replies to critiques will be implemented in either the next version (1.13) or the one after that (1.14). It's going to be about the same amount of time in either case, the only difference is whether I release the current set of changes as 1.13 or wait until the replies to critiques thing is done.

2. If you try to embed a photoSIG photo in another site then you'll get a photoSIG advertisement instead. I like people posting references to photoSIG on other sites, but just embedding the image somewhere generates a lot of hits on the photoSIG server that don't translate into additional users.

3. I don't think that there's mucht to the idea that the time of day affects the number of critiques that you get. If the system is slow when you post your photo then sure, fewer people will see it, but on the other hand, it will stay on the front page longer.

Ironically I've heard people make both arguments, that (a) photos posted late at night don't get many critiques becuase nobody's on the system, and that (b) photos posted when the system is busy don't get many critiques because they roll off the front page too soon. I think that it's more likely that some photos just get more attention than others.

In any case, each photo will be seen by at least three Last Chance Critics in its first week on the system, so every photo will receive a few critiques at least. Of 18,658 photos on photoSIG, there are exactly 12 at the moment that have been on the system for more than 24 hours yet do not have any critiques.

Regards,
Willis

Thanks Willis. I didn't know about that last part that the last chance critics will critique the ones with little or no critiques in the last week. Have one that's been up over 24 hours with one critique. Guess I will wait on that one and my horse shot that has no critiques. Usually I ask for more critiques in the photos forum after 12 hours of little or no critiques. Guess tonight was flower night and not animal night. Good thing I posted some flower shots too. :-)

there are exactly 12 at the moment that have been on the system for
more than 24 hours yet do not have any critiques.

Regards,
Willis
