5D with 16 megs in 2/08 What do you think? timing of release and 16 megs ok by you? wonder what else it will be...size, cost....

if you read stuff on the 40D threads. I just like jazzing up the maybees. Who knows, it could be true. If not, then it's just hot air.

That sounds about right. My only thoughts are that the 40D and 1Ds Mk III are higher priority for Canon to release, and they will be updated either sooner or at the same time as the 5D successor.

I'm hoping for improvements in DR, noise, and overall image pop. Actually wish Canon would keep the megapixels the same.

For many reasons, the biggest of which is the diffraction issue, I hope the next 5D remains with the pixel size now in use. It is ideal for what I need. I would like very much to see higher bit depth which should help the DR considerably. BUT... Canon, which has accountants in charge most of the time, will probably figure that they HAVE to increase the MP to make the sale to those who buy on "spec" alone.

People seem to be overlooking the new pixel spacing on the 1D mkIII. Smaller interspace between pixels let them increase res from 8mp to 10 without changing the size of the pixels. I'll bet that Canon can go from 12 to 16 without decreasing pixel dimension by a whole lot. One's a 25% increase, the other a 33%.

They should announce what's coming in next few months at least.

Will be interesting to see how aggressive they get given Nikon and Sony are also coming with some big news.

I know a guy who is attending both the press conference for Canon and is being flown out to Japan by Nikon to see their newest developments.

As you may have already heard, sony is also coming out with news soon on their high-end amateur and pro camera

cannot wait till everything gets out and people are over all that rumour stuff incl. me...hahahaha....finally wanna know which cam gonna be next...1Ds or 5D...

gonna be a funny month with all the media reporting about the new cams and people and journalists taking the cams apart and the company fighting for the best cam...kind of boring right now...

Canon won't say they are releasing a 5D successor in February until just beforehand... otherwise sales of 5Ds will take a dive for the next 4 months as ppl wait for the new model. And that would cost canon a lot of profits.

Ain't gonna happen...

I'm guessing a new IDs Mark III, with 14 bit captures, maybe and increase to 22 mp, but I doubt it. (Would be awesome) The 14 bit, along with with larger LCD, improved file processing and better high ISO noise control, similar to the 1D mark III, a bigger buffer and remote file transfer, would be enough of an improvement to be a significant upgrade, for me at least. I wouldn't expect a 5d out just yet as it would take away the thunder (and sales) from a new 1Ds Mark III model.

While that's cool, even bigger pixels rather than more pixels would be even cooler, for my needs at least. Better DR and noise characteristics.

I agree that this would at least be consistent with how camera companies normally operate (it is very different in the IT world and some other industries).

Canon's announcement would probably cover anything that we might expect to see in 2007. 2008 PMA is another chapter, and Canon won't tip their hand as to what to expect then.

Unless it's the same megapixels as the current model, a 5D successor prior to announcement of the 1Ds Mk III seems unlikely. The 40D also seems like a really important camera to get out soon, especially with the Christmas season arriving.

So PMA for the 5D successor makes a lot of sense. I wish it were sooner, but this is what I regard as the most likely. The one exception would be if the 5D successor was quite different from what most expect, e.g., a sub-$2000 camera with no significant additional features, same megapixels, and so forth.

Makes good economic sense to use the current 1Ds 2 sensor in the new 5d body after moving the 1Ds 111 to 21mp.
I am of course assuming they are recycling an existing sensor.

The only one I could find was stating '--- my guesses--' for the PMA
date.
Clearly nobody knows what Canon's plans are for next year. Clearly Canon is very likely to announce a new DSLR at PMA. Clearly, just as every time in the past, many people are going to make bad guesses about what Canon is going to do. This guess is probably one of them. Now that those who thought the 5D was going to come this time know that they were wrong, they will try for the next time and probably be wrong again.

The Amazon web pages confirm my fairly obvious prediction that this year's Canon announcements would follow the same pattern as 2004's Canon announcements. Since Canon has a history of sticking with patterns, the best expectation for next year is that it will follow 2005's pattern. That would be a 400D upgrade at PMA followed by a 5D upgrade and a 1D Mark III refresh a year from now. Now one could make some arguments for reordering these announcements and its not impossible for a 5D upgrade to arrive at PMA. But in the past Canon has not deviated from their established order and they probably will not next year either.
