well I posted this in the 30d forum, I just wanted 350d 400d owners opinion.

I have been saving for a dslr for about 8 months and have $850 USD saved up and I can not choose which one.

I presently shoot with a Canon Ae-1 and have been researching for about 4 months.

Do I go with the 30d with 5fps for occasional sports shots, the bigger size(I have average sized hands), and a click wheel.

Or do I choose the 400d with 2 more mp and $300 less.

What do I choose??

There isn't that much difference in the image quality, providing you get the shot. But camera handling often means the difference between getting the shot or not, and the 30D definitely handles better than the 400D.

Especially if you decide for the 30D, I would wait until the fall introduction of new models. There has been much talk of a 40D imminently replacing the aging 30D. When that happens you'll likely get a good deal on the 30D as dealers scurry to unload the "old" merchandise.

I presently shoot with a 300D...and am waiting until the new model is announced and then hopefully get a good deal on the 30D. The 400D feels way to small for me.

400D has 10 MP pixel, image quality better than 30D. That is a person select digital camera for. The Image quality go 1st.

Body built is only talk for film shooter.

30D has better body built, but poor image qaulity.....

Just like to are selecting Canon D30 or D60.... there are better body built, but why your are not consider them.....

I own both 5D and 400D, find not much difference apart from 10MP vs 12 MP, ISO do perform better in 5D.

I would get the 400D. Personally, I don't think the size and extra features of the 30D are enough to pay extra for. I also like using the LCD screen for settings more than an LED even if it sucks up more power because it's organized better and I think it's more useful to look down than look up at the settings I'm using (if that makes sense, it feels awkwardly worded). But that's just how I work. I love the size too, and I've never really understood complaints with it. But I might have spider fingers, so maybe that's the reason I'm drawn to the size. When I used to play videogames, I used the Madcatz Microcon controllers, and if you've seen them, they're extremely small and almost claustrophobic in comparison to the official controllers. If you don't mind waiting, you could get the 40D, since it seems right around the corner. I haven't been following the rumors, but it will probably be an upgraded 30D and nothing more, since Canon has predictable upgrades. So, if you're buying for new features, it could be the perfect 400D-30D hybrid you need.

Very wrong. I own both the 30D and the 400D and I'm about to sell my 400D. The image quality is about equal, but the 30D exposes more consistently (and my 400D did NOT have the underexposure problem).

30D image quality is excellent. Obviously you have never shot with one.

ISO 800 and 1600 in 30D performs slightly better than 400D. And the 30D offers ISO3200.

30D is a faster camera, better built, has spot metering, Kelvin WB adjustment, better viewfinder, 1/3 stop ISO settings, double the battery life and slightly better ISO performance. 10MP vs. 8 MP is not a difference at all regarding image quality. It just gives you more headroom for cropping your photos in PP. The dust shaker sensor in the 400D does not work effectively.

If you want a better camera and can afford the extra $350, get the 30D. With the announcement of the 40D, the 30D price may come down even more, since it will be discontinued soon.

The best thing that could poke you in the eye....is your viewfinder.

They are both good cameras and you should choose based on personal preference.

The primary reason I have the 400D (other than cost) is it’s small size and relatively light weight – for day hikes, amusement parks and other situations where I’m carrying the camera around all day and don’t want it to become a nuisance. It is noticeably smaller and lighter than the 30D. If size and weight don’t matter to you I’d opt for the 30D.

I am now waiting to see how good the 40D is, I may go for that camera for sports (primarily motorsports) and similar uses. If I do I’ll still keep the 400D as a second camera for the times I don’t want to lug the larger and heavier camera around.

I own a 30D and love it.
That being said I already have $3000. in glass.

If you have more money for some lens the 30d might be your best choice. If you have to buy just the camera and the kit lens you might be disappointed.
If that was the case I would go for the 400D and some lens options.
