havent posted for a while...heres a few from a sunny hike a few weeks ago from LandsEnd to Zennor

PS I no longer have this P880, I loved it, but it no longer fitted my usage, the IQ was always always great, and was always better than I expected....if Kodak make a replacement, then I shall buy..I shoot raw nearly all the time now, and the P880 was just too slow unfortunately

Vaughn,

Thanks for posting some shots. I also enjoyed perusing your online A100 portfolio. Very nice, indeed. Did you sell the P880 or give it away?

My brother has my P880...its great,I cant fault the lens or IQ, I have started to write few magazine articles, and I am also submitting around 50 shots per week for stock...I am hoping it will pay off in time, so unfortunately the P880 was no longer suitable ...but the IQ was always more than acceptable.

I have a Z612 for a pocket camera and again it really is suprisingly good....I shall keep my eyeon the Kodak range and maybe buy another if/when a P880 successor is released...we can but hope

I think that it's a shame when Kodak has a winning camera that can be updated and improved upon and turned into a really great camera, but refuses to do this. I can totally understand how the P880 limitations let you give it up.

I almost feel the same way about the DX7590. Instead of keeping that camera alive, and refining and improving it, Kodak moved away from that model and now makes the Z-cameras. The DX7590 is slow by today's standards, and is missing some features, but I can't bring myself to sell it yet. I am having too difficult of a time finding a suitable replacement that I can feel comfortable with.

I believe that if Kodak would have brought out new and improved models to replace the P880 and DX7590, they would have had a couple of cameras that would have been top sellers, and would have made the other camera makers stop and take notice!

Yes its a shame

Just to give you an idea, I have had to buy a Carl Zeiss lens for the Sony A100, which gives me 24mm to 120mm equiv...still not the range of the Kodak, that lens sells in the UK at £550 (over $1000 !!!), add the cost of the A100 body and you can see it was a very expensive decision

The stock agencies (and me) are quite happy with the P880 IQ..but the poor EVF and the really slow RAW write time made me go DSLR, there is a Richo alternative now,but I am unsure if it is as good as the P880 (for IQ),so I bought the A100...which is very good also

This is by no means a criticism of the P880...its a really good camera and gives DSLR like results, but Kodak could have built on that model...they must have their reasons...the market is maybe just not there...but I find that hard to believe....it is a total mystery to me,cant understand it at all :-(

Well me too Ananda...I remember telling you that I wouldnt buy that Zeiss Lens, well I really had no choice as the standard kit lenses with DSLRs are not really too good, I thought all DSLR camera kit lenses were at least as sharp as a P880...unfortunately not

I was paid a credit for a magazine article, and that went some way to funding the Zeiss lens, but I still feel kind of ripped off

Hope to start getting some money back now, some of my stock shots are actually starting to sell at last...time will tell, problem is, the type of travel/tourism shots I submit area bit boring to shoot, they dont need masterpieces, just thousands of well composed, properly exposed landmarks, buildings, etc....a bit dull to shoot really....but if there is money to be made...I am in a perfect situation to do it as I travel so much with my "rea"l job...and it kind of amuses me :-)

I am writing a series of articles on the South West Coast path (have agreed to do six), my next article is going to be on the victorian seaside resorts of Devon and Cornwall (like Ilfracombe, Torquay,Lynton/Lynmouth, Paignton etc), and I have had one article published in a Minolta/Sony magazine, hence I cant really use the P880 for that.

I shall post some stuff from my Z612 occasionally as I intend to carry it on my hikes, and it can give some really nice results when you get used to it
Best regards
I feel a bit sad not to see you with the P880. You did great with it
and it with you.

I haven't shot for a little while - haven't had the urge to shoot,
except from the hip.

There is no denying that the P880 takes an awesome photograph, your harbours are a typical example of where the P880 shines...look at these also

great shots again, always enjoy looking :) whilst it may not take raw
very fast etc. it does take a cracking picture :)
I look a few harbour ones (no pp)

Got a DX/P, taken a shot, blank EVF ? no worries, use the shutter
button the camera can still take pictures, even if you can't see.

Thanks Sarah, the A100 is a good solid camera...really good , I have that really nice zeis 16-80 lens now (arrived yesterday) and it really does transform the camera, I am hoping for some really nice results soon

The A100 with that lens should keep me happy for a long while I hope, but it was really hard to part with the P880 :-(....theres so much more of the South West Coast path to shoot, so it will get some use I am sure.

Nice pictures, as always.

I was thinking about getting an A100, as a first-time affordable DSLR. The reviews seem favorable...or maybe an Olympus E410...or a Nikon D40x. The DSLR cameras and lenses appear to be getting smaller and less expensive, especially the E410. Are you happy with your A100?

I'm still shooting the Kodak Z740, but I may retire that one soon, to also someone as you had done. I may just wait and see if the next generation cameras are going to be much better, or save money for a DSLR. In Oregon, we have to have cameras that do well in low-light. Even this weekend we had dark clouds and rain, even though normally our summers are dry.

I really like the A100, it was not too expensive, and I bought it with the 18-200 kit lens which if you treat it like a P&S superzoom is fantastic as the A100 has Image stabilisation on body,so it works with any lens

The low light performance is good IMO, I used a D80 for a while and that was better at high ISOs, but the A100 is still good, and I think it meters better in Matrix Metering mode, I too use the A100 in dull conditions and I am generally pleased, but if you shoot in really really gloomy conditions without flash, maybe a Nikon would be better

All things considered I would say that I personally prefer the A100 over the Nikon D80, I sold my Nikon as I didnt like the way it metered, the IQ is virtually identical (same CCD), and the IS (or super steady shot as Sony call it) is a really really big feature, and it works great, I wouldnt swap my A100 for anything else, its a good tool, I just need to really get used to it, but the basics are all there,I dont think anything else is really any better, even the Nikon D200 uses the same chip, so the A100 can do the same job really...its fast at 3FPS, and thats even shooting RAW+JPEG !!, so the card is recording 6 files per second, thats fast enough for me

Sony are about to release some new Alphas, so the future looks OK..that was a worry for me for a while, but I think Sony are about to try and make a real dent in the DSLR market....if you see one at a good price, go for it, its alot of camera for the money, and the results with that Zeis lens are really top notch.
Best of luck
