New Comet! Our next target for the DA!!!

Unless I'm mistaken, the problem for you will be your latitude. I'm having a bit of difficulty finding a good time during which you would be able to see it well. It's well above the horizon for you, but generally duing the daytime.

But maybe all is not lost for you!

At its closest approach on April 28, for example, you ought to be able to get some good views after midnight. It will be something like 18º above your horizon by my estimates. Can you get to an unobstructed and clear air site? It climbs up in the sky from that time on. The tail should be pointed down towards the horizon at about 7:00; the higher it climbs, the easier to see.

Of course, at its closest approach to the sun on March 18th, you likely won't even be able to catch the thing due to its close proximity to the sun and the daylight hours.
i hope this one will look good from earth too....the last few,
including halleys, were a bust. come oooon comet gods!!!

oh yeah. a mile down the road is a building free, light free, beach which i use for lookin and snapin. if i drive 90 minutes i can be at the top of haleakala @ 10,000 feet...up there with the space survalience telescope and stuffs li-dat....frost and stuff too. just about as dark and clear as you could want.--you pay for what you get, but you don't always get what you paid for. heck this is interesting. have a 400mm refractor with 707 to mount on it. also have a 800' cliff overlooking north pacific ocean to shot from about a half mile away. the only problem will be clouds. lots a rain here 60+ inches a year. Will see though. In a Redwod forrested aera.
OK, we have time to plan this one. Time to really get some
potentially spectacular shots. There is probably nothing quite like
seeing a comet for feeling like you're in touch with the universe.

Now, how about actually shooting the comet with your DA? Appealing,
right??

That's going to present some problems. Maybe the clouds will look favorably upon you some days during that period.

kudster, here is what you'll see from that vantage point. I've accounted for the location (LURE Observatory), and even thrown in the elevation for 10,000 feet. :))

The timing starts from the day of closest approach to Earth, at midnight on each night. Taking into account atmospheric clarity, you may end up getting some of the BEST views in this case!

Just to whet the whistle of a few people who think it might be hard to photograph a comet. Here are a couple pics I took of comet Hale-Bopp a few years ago. This new comet might not be as good to photograph but it doesnt take much to try. I used a regular camera and 2 pieces of plywood and a hinge (barndoor tracker).

I thought I would revive this initial thread by Ulysses. Man, has this comet developed into something fun! Check out this animation (not taken by me or by a Sony):

you are just a wealth of information aren't you? :-)

Thanks for the info.... I'll be looking for this one!

I do try to be. :))

I'm sure you'll have fun looking for this one, if you're into astronomy.
