Corrupted image files

Hey,

I am currently on vacation and have run into a problem. While downloading my 8gb Sandisk card from my D200 to the computer I noticed that 58 of the 750 pictures on it were not showing up (just an unknown file icon). When I selected the image, an error message came up that said the files were corrupted. I tried to download from the camera and even another computer... no dice. All but those 58 images showed up and transferred. I know exactly what pictures are missing and they are those "once in a lifetime" kind. I really need some advice and would appreciate your help. Is there a free* program I could get? I tried a few but they just seem to find all the deleted images and not the corrupted ones... plus they take forever.

P.S. I read online that the 8gb Sandisk card came with some software for issues such as this... but as usual I don't have it with me and probably wont find it when I get home.

Google PC inspector, has worked for me before, might do the trick.

If Gerryd04 solution does not operate the way you want, you could also try "PhotoRescue", the best software I ever found on the net to recover files from CF cards (between others).

Sorry for taking this thread off-topic, but it may serve as a reminder about having 750 images on a single card. In my case, I'm not so much worried about corruption, but about theft (someone stealing a body with 8GB of images on the card)

I gave both programs a try and they just seemed to find my deleted pictures but didn't touch any of the corrupted files. However, there was one corrupted file that had the "half normal half negative" look to it that it found but did not fix. Am I out of options? I want to format the card, but I'm waiting to try and get these pictures off. It's not even letting me copy the corrupted files. Thanks for the help.

Is it possible that you are turning power off whilst the camera is still writing to disc? If you fire off a burst of shots and then do not wait until the green write light has gone out I think you can corrupt the file. No expert but I used to have a similar problem and now always look to see if disc writing is occuring before switching off - no more problems since using this technique. Sorry if this is GBO

Most camera's will not actually turn off until the data is written to the memory card.

But, you can certainly open the door and remove the card while it is being written.
This, of course, is a big No-No

If you really value the pics... stop doing anything, buy a new card and enjoy your holiday. When you get home you can try all the recovery software and hopefully be successful.

I had a similar experience with a 8 GB sandisk card. I had 20 corrupt out of 500 pictures.

I tried everything I could think of, everything from recovery software to changing USB modes. Nothing worked, corrupt images are really corrupt.

I had to bite the bullet and consider them gone. That decision enabled me to format the card in computer once, format the card in the camera ten times, and then I defragged it and ran scandisk on it.

I've yet to see any new corrupt images. 1000 shutter releases later. But then again, I haven't shot anything critical, so Murphy has probably been looking away...

My conclusion was that maybe my card was too new in combination with a brand new camera. Maybe it needed some wear-in. Or it could have been the thunder in the air, causing magnetic interference.

It does unfortunately not support previewing NEF files, so I cannot decide if the corrupted images can be recovered with this software or not, since only the full version allows to save the recovered files.

I use both and they WORK. 100% so far!
