I got my 300D before the 17-85 IS or 70-300 IS lenses were available, so this was the best IS lens I could afford. It's still the lens I use most often. Though it doesn't have the "walk around" lens versitility on the 1.6 crop sensor, it's 45-210mm equivolent range is still very useful as a medium telephoto zoom.
A very sweet but not entirely reliable lens in as much a the XT/ and perhaps to a slightly lesser extent the XTi sometimes miss the focus in low light But I cannot really blame it.

Theory is when you know everything and nothing works.
Practice is when things work, and no one knows why.
Here we combine theory and practice.
Nothing works and no one knows why.
I had the kit lens (18-55) and wanted to complete the long range. SO i got the 70-300 as my second. Now i wanna go wide and am looking at 10-22mm as my third.
Great thread this one. I haven't played with this or kit for a while and this makes me want to superglue the nifty on my 350d and improve my skills (let alone pick up the camera again). Also I would like to share the fact that when it comes to future lens purchases i am revaluating my needs. This can be difficult at times as we read about "L's", ie. 70-200f? but when looking at what my shooting style, this may not be it. I believe I like to shoot wide and that's where the 10-22 maybe my cup of tea but cost and future proofing (lame but nonetheless an ef-s offering) has held me back.
I will rewrite this. My skills so far have not been enough to justify neither a 70-200, nor 10-22. It has reminded me however to try to commit to my 50, 1.8 and impress my in-house accountant with future purchases.

I like this thread. I just purchased XT last month with the kit lens. I just ordered and got in the mail yesterday the 50mm f/1.8 and what I've seen of it, it is awesome. I love it. I haven't taken anything of in terest, just random stuff, but the color and quality is much better than kit. Of course, looks like I'll be indoors all weekend, mother nature decided to let Hurricane Dean come down and make some rain in H-town.

Just trying to learn
My 350D body came with the 50mm f/1.8 lens rather than the kit. I bought my second and third lenses together: the 17-40mm f/4L and the 70-200mm f/4L. All three of them are great lenses.
